Haywire (2011)
A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.
Directed by always artsy and glossy Steven Soderbergh and starring a barrage of talent! What could go wrong? In the spy business… everything.
The relatively unknown Gina Carano stars in this action packed game of lies and deceit. She’s backed up by some (very) familiar faces, which i believe the ladies (of all ages) would cream over: Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and “holy shit! it’s Bill Paxton!”
Assassins sent on a mission, betrayal by superiors happen and the guns start blazin’!
TRIVIA: The very first and very last word of the movie are the same: “Shit.” The hero says it at the beginning, and the arch-villain at the end.
A thrill ride that went sour… Some of the fight sequences were (well choreographed) great! A whole lot goes on action-wise but fails to hit my expectations. It’s a conspiracy film with plot holes and inconsistencies (i had to read the movie info to make sure this was a Soderbergh film). Possibly the directors “weakest film” yet.
The overall pacing of the film was quite slow. This was a great platform for lead Gina Carano, who gives us a decent “female action star” performance.
My verdict? It was OK. Not bad and not good. Something to watch on a sunday afternoon. Proof that, Big stars doesn’t automatically equate to Big hit.
