Justice League: Doom (2012)
Vandal Savage steals confidential files Batman has compiled on the members of the Justice League, and learns all their weaknesses.
The television voice actors go straight to video…
My 1st thought: It’s a modern Challenge of the SuperFriends (1978)! It even has the bubble type headquarters that rises from the bog.
The Legion of Doom!!!
Batman is a douche - he secretly devises ways to disable his teammates in case of a “problem”. And loses it to the hands of the baddies, who use it against the league.
Vandal Savage is the main villain, i’m not too familiar with his background… And WHAT THE FUCK. Cyborg??? really? i mean REALLY?So the basic story goes around WHY Batman would do such a thing. It’s for you own safety fools! One thing i disliked was how they resolved the solar flare dilemma… c’mon, it follows the space dust - captain obvious would say?
Audiences are treated to some one-on-one action between the heroes and adversaries - i wasn’t familiar with some of them… maybe thats why i didn’t quite enjoy this. I felt left out.
Not the best, not the worse. The animation was typical (TV) and the story wasn’t compelling enough to grab hold of my full attention. Understandably straight to video. Another way-too-convenient ‘toon.

Chronicle (2012)
Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.
Origins: Good and Evil collide!!! Sparked by angst, abuse and power!
I honestly thought it was gonna be a big budget Hollywood B.S. flick…
What a thrilling surprise it was to catch this little film, about great power and responsibility. I mocked the idea at first… the final product got my respect.
The new boys! “still waters run deep” Andrew (Dane DeHaan), “Best dude” Matt (Alex Russell) and “Mr. President” Steve (Michael B. Jordan) fly high and touch the sky. An impressive starring debut for the 3 gentlemen. I had my initial doubts and worries, In the end they did the job well.
Written & Directed by relative unknowns, this superpower film kicked ass! in more ways than one. BUT… you know you’ve seen this before… Tweaked a bit and reoriented for the American market… Akira (1988) - TELL ME I’M NOT RIGHT? I DARE YOU.
Sci-fi, action, adventure, fantasy and drama!!! What a mouthful.
Bullied boys and Cool kids, let evil and good brood. The roots of madness and kindness are captured by the buddy trio and their fantastic journey within themselves. We all want powers! Jealousy got the best of me… damn.
The “captured footage” angle has been drawn out and so has the “superpower” genre. How did this film kickass? Good writing and directing. The visual effects were neat and the action (in the end) was epic! Akira!
Not a shaky as some would think. Clean edits between different video recorders and security cams remind people that this is a “fun film”.
They’re sold me my own dream - it’s been a while since i’ve felt this way about a film. Especially one that i initially dissed/mocked (without proof). I am now a believer, no longer a doubter.
Sometime y’gotta give a film a chance, it may surprise you - with its inner strength.

Gantz 2: Perfect Answer (2011)
Masaru Kato’s death changes Kei Kurono’s view of life completely. He decides to keep fighting until he earns 100 points so that he can bring back Kato. Gantz calls back Ayukawa and other Gantz alumni who’d left once after scoring 100 points. In the meantime Kurono works on getting 100 points. But before Kurono succeeds in resurrecting Kato, Kato unexpectedlyturns up.
The follow up to the live action feature Gantz (2011).
Gantz comes full circle, in this battle between evil and good. Choices must be made and decisions topple the fate of life and death.
Someone MUST die! The aliens this time around were not as entertaining or amusing. A lot of human drama between old and new characters. An investigator becomes part of the fray and witnesses the impossible.
Awesome special effects and shootout “draw” scenes. But this wash’t as good as the first Gantz. It lacked that “wow” factor. The baddies in the first were way better than this one. They take it down to a human level, this time around. The story is good enough to keep viewers glued ‘til the very end. Finally, it all makes sense.
The end was as it should be. Neat and tidy.
I suggest/think that the best way to appreciate this Manga turned Live Action is to MARATHON both films, and see it as a whole.

A Lonely Place to Die (2011)
A group of mountaineers in the Scottish Highlands discover a kidnapped girl and are pursued by her captors.
Off to the mountains! For some R&R and… death.
Directed by Julian Gilbey, who surprised me with his rowdy and violent Rise of the Footsoldier (2007).
Hell yeah! A survival thriller starring Melissa George - who came out in a bunch of horror films (I personally enjoyed): Triangle (2009), Turistas (2006), 30 Days of Night (2007) and The Amityville Horror (2005). Horror-suspense-thriller is her genre, she can sell it.
A British adventure horror looming in the realm of “it could happen” or “it’s fairly possible”. Adding fright to an already frightful separation from civilization. You’re on your own…
It’s a nail biting ride that slowly edges through the crime genre. Hikers discover a child in the forest “who’s she?” And in a blink of an eye - they fall one by one. There is little information given about the mountaineers and the criminals that surround them. The suspense bit and sudden shocks are what this film’s all about.Yeah, this ain’t an award winner. Some may even call it “stupid” - But if you’re looking for some thrills and death spills, this one’s for you.
What gave this film strength was the foley/sound effects used in death/violent scenes, you can hear ‘em bones break. I cringed a few times. Another thing that kept my interest was one of the criminals - The fat bearded one. He was very horror monster-ish.
The scenery and dialogue was… sorta typical, BUT this film got me. I can’t quite put my finger on where or how.
Watch it for what it is… a survival/chase thriller.

Immortals (2011)
Theseus is a mortal man chosen by Zeus to lead the fight against the ruthless King Hyperion, who is on a rampage across Greece to obtain a weapon that can destroy humanity.
Tarsem does it AGAIN!!! Gorgeous! Beautifully brutal to the eyes.
Either a “hit or miss” as most expected and critiqued. Epic as it was, we know from the trailer what its all about. Action and shiny effects - with the addition of gratuitous gore!!!
Let’s get this out of the way: This is an “interpretation” (by Charley & Vlas Parlapanides) of the REAL story/myths/gods. The gloves are off, forget what you know about the gods. Deal with it.
King Hyperion has come to kill and look badass, Mickey Rourke is the villain you love to hate. Henry Cavill is our hero - i didn’t quite agree with the casting choice here. Legendary John Hurt adds some grace and talent to this story of valor and revenge. Luke Evans as Zeus! and Isabel Lucas as Athena = splendid. The characters were all golden, including the extras. What??? Stephen Dorff, awesome.
Men and gods come face to face in a battle running since the dawn of time.
The Titans were kinda… small? I always imagined (well, saw in other films/interpretations) as giant beasts. This was an appreciated twist - the payoff is the battle between them and the gods, one equal ground, or height so to speak.
The fight cinematography and choreography were blistering. Much like my all-time fav 300 (2006). Slow-mo beauty and intense action sequences.
As with all the previous Tarsem films the costumes were extraordinary and vibrant.
Action, adventure, fantasy, mythology and spectacular imagery.
I admit… it’s pretty on the outside, and hollow on the inside. It’s exactly what i expected and wanted!

Conan the Barbarian (2011)
The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.
A modern version of the 1982 classic action adventure fantasy. Based on the stories of Robert E. Howard.
Khal Drogo lives! Jason Momoa brought the hero back to life, he ain’t no Schwarzenegger, nevertheless portrayed the hero well. A good stepping stone for his leading man career.
And look, surprises! Ron Perlman as the father of Conan?!? Sweet. And the beautifully horrendous Rose McGowan! I’m upset her project with Robert Rodriguez “Red Sonja” didn’t push through… Red Sonja was a spinoff of the original Conan novels.
It looked and felt like the original, and maybe that’s where the fault lies for it’s mediocrity. They stuck to the old formula, which was not welcomed by modern day cinema goes and critics. It was a good attempt.
This did not impress early viewers, take it for what it is… a “rental”.
See it for what it is, a musclebound hero gutting and slashing his way to revenge. Conan.

Attack the Block (2011)
A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion.
Shaun of the Dead (2004) meets Super 8 (2011)! An absolutely FUN sci-fi action comedy.
Props to writer/director Joe Cornish, for blurring the lines of fantasy and reality. This had great visuals and the characters felt real. Dark and vibrant at the same time. This urban sci-fi has something about it that just captures audiences…
Potty mouth kids battle “blackest black” creatures from another planet. The effects and creatures were simple and yet decent. What drove this film was the awesome bunch of troublemakers and their leader Moses. Played by 1st timer John Boyega - who did a good job as the rough and tough teen. The banter and wit was amusing to say the least.
And “woah!” Nick Frost slouched on the couch… once again. This time he’s a pot dealer! It doesn’t get any better than that.
The music was a bonus. It set the pace and tone, making this a thrill ride with some kick.
Some have dubbed this as the “British Super 8”- I say it’s something else.
“Inner City vs. Outer Space” -> this says it all.

Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008)
The mythical world starts a rebellion against humanity in order to rule the Earth, so Hellboy and his team must save the world from the rebellious creatures.
Based on the comic written and illustrated by Mike Mignola.
Guillermo del Toro betters his 1st Hellboy with a non-stop action fantasy sequel! Bigger, badder monsters and creatures. And maestro Danny Elfman sets the mood and tone with his whimsical scoring.
Ron Perlman, Selma Blair and Doug Jones (Faun, Silver Surfer) return as the super trio out to save the world from ghastly horrors. WOAH!!! joining them on this journey is Johann Kraus, voiced by Seth MacFarlane! John Hurt and Jeffrey Tambor add a vintage flavor to the excitement and thrill of this fantastic journey.
Luke Goss and Anna Walton were perfect as the royal family members torn between destroying and saving the world. And their golden army??? Was superbly done! I loved how they animated and designed the mechanical beasts.
The underworld market and new weaponry were a great touch. Not to mention the humor! So much better than the 1st. 2008 was a great year for comic book movies.
No news of a part 3, yet…

Griff the Invisible (2010)
Griff, office worker by day, superhero by night, has his world turned upside down when he meets Melody, a beautiful young scientist who shares his passion for the impossible.
A “real” Aussie Superhero! Good on ya mate, this was ok!
The story was a mix of Kick-Ass (2010) + Wanted (2008), Executed like Super (2010) & Defendor (2009), with a tiny dash of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008) and twist of Paper Man (2009). A decent low budget hero flick by writer/director Leon Ford.
This was a refreshing escape from the guns and glamor of Hollywood hero flicks. Closer to earth, so to speak. The psychology of “superheroes” intrigues me…
Neatly packaged. Acting wasn’t too shabby, the romance bits weren’t vomit inducing and the effects were… well… they got the point across.
If you’re the type that likes these kinds of “raw” hero films, you might wanna check outSuperheroes (2011) and the Mockumentary Comic Book: The Movie (2004).
Not the best, but definitely not the worst.

Brazil (1985)
A bureaucrat in a retro-future world tries to correct an administrative error and himself becomes an enemy of the state.
The Plot Synopsis above doesn’t capture this film. If you know Terry Gilliam, YOU KNOW it’s gonna be a fun ride. Bizarre and whimsical from start to end, there’s so much to look at.
A sci-fi masterpiece! from a director who does fantasy comedies. After reviewing The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009) i had the urge to watch another Gilliam…
Jonathan Pryce was brilliant in his performance as the mild mannered desk jockey and the winged hero. He did well as the central character in this oh-so-crazy world. The sets and characters were truly one for the optic senses. And “Woah!” remember Robert De Niro is in this! And what about the demented “interrogators”??? Twisted!
There’s just so much to talk about “visually” and the prosthetic work… genius. The song is still running in my head. “Braaaaziiiiiiil!”
TRIVIA: The samurai sequence was originally conceived to reflect Terry Gilliam’s love for Akira Kurosawa films.
A glimpse into the future, when the shit has hit the fan in this utopian disaster. Filled with paperwork and rules governed by greed and superficiality. It may be hard to digest at first, but make no mistake - this is a classic. And a great one at that.

The Losers (2010)
After being betrayed and left for dead, members of a CIA black ops team root out those who targeted them for assassination.
Went through some old stuff… looking for fun… I grabbed this.
Round 2 of The Losers (2010) was great! There was no mystery, but the fun and entertainment was still there. The elevator infiltration scene was as uplifting as it was the first time. Damn Cougar is a smooth character everyone loves.
This isn’t one of those films you dissect, you just sit back and digest.
Action. Fun.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011)
Harry, Ron and Hermione search for Voldemort’s remaining Horcruxes in their effort to destroy the Dark Lord.
Finally, i have time to edit and (finally) post this. The end of a saga.
What can i say that hasn’t been said? I originally had a 500 page novel written and opted to omit majority of the senseless movie babble, which most “serious” movie bloggers do- bore their audiences.
All good (and bad) things must come to an end. Fuck the first 2 Potters - absolutely terrible (i laughed my ass off at what failures they were- Yes i was a Potter hater). AND THEN… Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban (2004) had me glued to the screen. Dark, just the way i like ‘em. Gary “the fuckin’ man” Oldman. And so my Potterrific adventure begins!
I braved my fear/despise of theaters to see Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire (2005), without any regrets. Stunning and fun throughout! I loved the whole school battle/pissing contest - it’s the frat boy in me. And my (instinctive) male competitive behavior had a lot to do with my satisfaction. I could see everyone growing up, as if they’ve become my friends.
But then The Order of the Phoenix (2007) snailed the tempo and showed a bureaucratic side of the saga. Though unimpressed with the total/final result, some details became clearer. I have not, nor will i ever pick up J.K. Rowling literature.
My anticipation for the next installment was questionable. I had dumbed down my expectations, lo and behold… Dumbledore fuckin’ dies! Glorious! Can i get a “fuck yeah!” for The Half-Blood Prince (2009!?!?
The first installment of The Hallows was as impressive as the previous. Stretching the set up for the inevitable final battle and confrontation between Harry and his nemesis.
My Review: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: Part 1 (2010)
Now the story has been told… The Deathly Hallows: Part 2 (2011). Entertaining and neatly shuts the book of Potter cinema. Did i say neatly? Allow me to me rephrase… It could have been done a lot better.
The flaw of this last film may be on the directors seat. There were some questionable elements about the film that just didn’t seem right. The most obvious would probably be the climactic scene where Lord Voldemort says “Avada Kedavra”… i laughed. Towards the end of production, my guess is that people got comfortable and forgot to put the kick in kickass.
An epic tale of friends, family, foes and fantasies that teases the imagination to greater heights. I now understand why the books became such a success and i applaud everyone that has been part of this momentous series of films.
The Potter series has come to a close and everyone is full and content. I enjoyed being able to live through all films, and witness it’s end. It’s been a fun journey, thank you for the magic.

The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (2009)
A traveling theater company gives its audience much more than they were expecting.
Was better a second time around! I was upset (with the theater) the first time i reviewed THIS.
Lily Cole = love at first sight! She had he glued to the screen. She’s like a Nymph or an Angel. Funny how her model height showed (was obvious) in some scenes.
R.I.P. Heath Ledger. This was unfinished work, that was finished - with the help of some noteworthy talent/friends. Kudos to you all gentlemen (Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell). The adjustment to keep this film going was truly remarkable/clever, and was a great “tribute” to Ledger.
Terry Gilliam is a fantasy GENIUS!

The Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011)
An origin story set in present day San Francisco, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.
The genesis of the iconic and legendary film Planet of the Apes (1968)!
James Franco… man the guy is so hot he can sell an inverted crucifix to the pope. Undeniably one of the “in demand” actors in modern cinema. The guy’s got the looks and he can act.
Now that that’s out of the way we can talk about the film and the spectacular effects. The Apes are the stars here, fuck all the humans. Not including the wonderful effects team that brought this film together and displayed their talent.
Caesar aka Andy Serkis (Gollum) stole the show! along with his CGI primal mates. I loved how the writers tied-up the “launch” and left the film open ended. Leaving room for a “possible” part 2.
The story also has a Monkey Shines (1988) element to it. Seeing John Lithgow made my heart pitter patter. That crazy old man!
And there were some surprises too Tom Felton gets what he deserves and Brian Cox = a strict douche again. They represented so many of us who take things for granted, being the proud race that we are. One day we too shall be humbled.
The chaos and theory was admirable. The demise of the world may come in any form size or number (rise of the zombies, rise of the robots, rise of the aliens, rise of the apes etc.). Splendid production quality that does not disappoint.
Funny thing: They ate cookies more than they did bananas! (was there even a banana?) SEE: The Greatest Movie Ever Sold (2011) to find out why.
I do hope they make a (the rumored) sequel…
