    Attack the Block (2011) A teen gang in South London defend their block from an alien invasion. Shaun of the Dead (2004) meets Super 8 (2011)! An absolutely FUN sci-fi action comedy. Props to writer/director Joe Cornish, for blurring the lines of fantasy and reality. This had great visuals and the characters felt real. Dark and vibrant at the same time. This urban sci-fi has something about it that just captures audiences… Potty mouth kids battle “blackest black” creatures from another planet. The effects and creatures were simple and yet decent. What drove this film was the awesome bunch of troublemakers and their leader Moses. Played by 1st timer John Boyega - who did a good job as the rough and tough teen. The banter and wit was amusing to say the least. And “woah!” Nick Frost slouched on the couch… once again. This time he’s a pot dealer! It doesn’t get any better than that. The music was a bonus. It set the pace and tone, making this a thrill ride with some kick. Some have dubbed this as the “British Super 8”- I say it’s something else. “Inner City vs. Outer Space” -> this says it all.

    Gantz (2011) After trying to rescue a man on the subway tracks, two teens wake up in a room dominated by a mysterious black sphere that sends them to hunt down and kill aliens hiding on Earth. Based on the Manga by Hiroya Oku. Which was made into a TV series Gantz (2004) and is now brought to the big screen with this live action adaptation. Starring one of my new favorite actors Kenichi Matsuyama, better known as “L” of the Death Note Saga. Fans should also check out his performance in Detroit Metal City (2008). Note: I have not read the manga nor have i followed the tv show. From what i saw I thought this was a decent film. I was entertained by the story, the action and the unexpected violence. The CGI, costumes and prop work was not that bad. The creatures/aliens were pretty cool (quirky), at some point it reminded me of some video games, even though effects were standard (looking). Might not be everyone’s cup-o-tea, and i don’t know if it stays true to the original material. I like these manga/anime-ish type of films.     From what i saw I thought this was a decent film. I was entertained by the story, the action and the unexpected violence. The CGI, costumes and prop work was not that bad.     Might not be everyone’s cup-o-tea, and i don’t know if it stays true to the original material. I like these manga/anime-ish type of films. And i can’t wait to see them step it up in Gantz: Part II (2011).

    Monsters (2010) Six years after Earth has suffered an alien invasion a cynical journalist agrees to escort a shaken American tourist through an infected zone in Mexico to the safety of the US border. Oh no! giant tentacles from outer space! “Quarantine the area!” says the government. Let’s get this out of the way: “This is definitely not like District 9 (2009)”. Budget-wise and idea-wise maybe, but in totality they were two completely different sci-fi aliens flicks. Believe it or not, this is actually a drama. A mellow paced sci-fi and not the horror-fest people expected. There are some scares but nothing we haven’t seen before. Luckily for us, this film has oodles to offer besides the usual horror sci-fi “kill, kill, kill”. Imagine the scenario of an alien invasion like in Cloverfield (2008), a devastating force from beyond our world. Tie that up with a wondrous journey to a different land, like in Jurrasic Park (1993). Add a familiar sea creature… last year we had “Fuckin’ Prawns” this year we have “Freakin’ Squids”. And a dash of “an area has been sealed off”. And let “normal” people traverse and travel an apocalyptic terrain and see how they dramatically discuss their future and the decisions they must make along the way, just like in the film Carriers (2009) and The Road (2009). And lastly add the “oohs” and “aahs”, that Close Encounters of the Third Kind (1977) had. “Affirmative sir, we have contact!” This is a post-apocalyptic(ish) sci-fi drama. It’s not a monster flick. Amazing job by writer/director/editor/SFX Gareth Edwards, who (rumor has it) spent a whopping $15,000 making this film. That in itself is AMAZING!!! 15K?!?!? WOW! A look at his previous work/films reveals that he leans towards science related films and documentaries. I was impressed by the quality of work done, but not so much with the entirety of the film (story-wise). We should just take it as “a day in the life of… people who are trapped in a monstrous place”, it’s kinda like a human drama. No heroes who rise up to a main foe/opponent at the very end, No epic battle between humans and aliens in spaceships firing lasers at each other. This film is simple and tight. Whitney Able was pretty damn cute, with her short blond hair. She can wear a gas mask and make it look fashionable! ‘nuff said. Leading man Scoot McNairy should be applauded for his performance. (Stating the obvious) The movie was all about their characters, and they pulled it off perfectly.  Without knowing the background of the film, some people may give this film negative comments. At times it did stretch… and I was asking myself “when’s the action gonna start?”… “where are the aliens?” Some people may feel this way and dismiss this film as a “hype” and nothing more. This is a deep film, in more ways than one. This is an adventure! My hats off to the entire staff and crew behind the scenes! This is proof that: talent > money. FACT: Filmed on a Sony EX3 with a Nikon 50 MM Lens -Used almost exclusively natural light except for a couple tiny LED lights for when it was pitch black -Effects were done in Adobe CS4, editing in Premiere -The majority of filming was shot with just a sound guy the director and the 2 main characters. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1470827/usercomments

    The Mist (2007) A freak storm unleashes a species of blood-thirsty creatures on a small town, where a small band of citizens hole-up in a supermarket and fight for their lives. A sci-fi horror that was more about human drama at a time of desperation. I was excited to see yet another horror by the master himself, Stephen King. Adding excitement was the name Frank Darabont, director of the highly anticipated TV show The Walking Dead (2010). And in true King form… this was a mediocre horror that will probably scare your parents. There are monsters and violence, but nothing like the “shock” horror movies that have come out in the past 3 years. I have to give merit to the human drama part of the film. Fear drives men into faith, and the somewhat ridiculous solution religion has to offer people in times of desperation. Men lose themselves and surrender to the unknown succumbing to illogical conclusions. This may have been a bit of a religious satire, which most of the films conflict is focused on, the monsters come second. Thomas Jane, who i consider to be a good actor, leads the cast of victims. The boy who played his son was awesome, good acting kid! There are some characters that may seem cliche and annoying, but they were a crucial element in this film. There are some notable scenes and horror moments close to something you’d see in a Tales from the Crypt (1989) kind of thing. It had a little Cloverfield (2008) in it, as far as the monsters were concerned. In the end it was a simple and typical horror, nice attempt though.     Near Dark (1987) A young man reluctantly joins a travelling “family” of evil vampires, when the girl he’d tried to seduce is part of that group. I’ve been following Kathryn Bigelow movies after viewing The Hurt Locker (2008). I loved Strange Days (1995) and Point Break (1991). Near Dark was a surprise for me, i’ve never heard of this movie! and it stars my favorite Aliens (1986) & Predator 2 (1990) cast members- Vasquez, Hudson (Bill Paxton) and Bishop. The amazing thing about this vamp-flick is that: Not once did they say the word “Vampire”. A great road-trip vampire movie! Nothing uber-spectacular, but great nevertheless. Some scenes/scenarios may not be/seem “possible/true” to the whole vampire mythology, but who cares! It’s still good! A must see for Vamp lovers, just like Salem’s Lot (1979), one of the most popular Vamp movies. Good characters, nice and tidy script and shot well. I tried my best to sit through this movie.
