Snowtown (2011)
Based on true events, 16 year-old Jamie falls in with his mother’s new boyfriend and his crowd of self-appointed neighborhood watchmen, a relationship that leads to a spree of torture and murder.
Based on a true story and the books: The Snowtown Murders by Andrew McGarry and Killing for Pleasure by Debi Marshall.
Disturbing! and a brutal Aussie flick by director Justin Kurzel. The horror of humanity.
Trapped in a world of violence and sexual frustrations. John is a sick motherfucker. Come Jaime join John in the dark side. This brings up WHY vigilantes are a threat to society.
The “Bodies in Barrels” murdersstory of the most famous Australia serial killer John Bunting.
The acting was SUPERB! You can feel they went “all in” on their performances. Everyone played their part well and delivered one of the most traumatizing films from down under.
Rape, pedophilia and murder. The pacing was a bit slow, but the weight of the issues tackled kept me glued. You just know in the back of your head “This will not end well” - for our characters.
TRIVIA: More than 250 suppression orders prevented publication of details of this case. In early 2011, a judge lifted the remaining orders in response to a request by the producers of the film Snowtown, a dramatic account of the murders.
Deep and brave in many ways. Not an award winning piece, one that opens eyes. Clean and properly done.
Abuse in it’s purest form. Evil camouflaged. Mankind at its worst.

The Tunnel (2011) aka The Tunnel Movie
An investigation into a government cover-up leads to a network of abandoned train tunnels deep beneath the heart of Sydney. As a journalist and her crew hunt for the story it quickly becomes clear the story is hunting them.
All biases aside… This film was directed by a friend, former teammate and fellow actor Carlo Ledesma. Popularly known as one of the hosts of the tv sports show Gameplan. This was a good Aussie horror flick, he truly deserved the title Best Australian Director at this year’s A Night Of Horror Awards.
In the past, i’ve mentioned my initial “doubts” when i see “Country: Australia” - i have have more misses than hits from down under. And i can mention a handful of decent horror flicks. I’m not one of those people who dislike the “accent”, it’s the style/quality of filming that bothers me.
A found footage story told by the survivors… presented in a nice and very professional way. Which may have been the two weak points of this film. Four people go in… two tell the tale, so you pretty much know what’s gonna go down. A little too clean, it didn’t have that gritty/rough texture as found in most found footage horrors.
The story was somewhat like/reminded me of my 1st date with Guillermo del Toro - Mimic (1997) - remember that one? with the bug creatures living in the tunnels/sewers. And my theory on the creature… The Descent (2005)? maybe.
Despite my critique, i was pleased to say “i got shocked” (my heart skipped a beat). There were a few jumps and scares, through the claustrophobic caverns. The opening sequence paved the way for what to expect visually, the twists were simple and executed very well. And i thought the slow pace was just right for this kind of docu-horror.
The acting was far more than i had expected (a step up from most). Believable fear and decent dialogue throughout. The props and locations were superb. And the government conspiracy bits were much appreciated as well. The creatures/beings were mysterious and creepy enough to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand.
This film impressed me, the monumental 135K project is the next step/phase/marriage of cinema and the internet. The film was funded by the viewers/audiences, the producers sold frames and tied up with torrent sites. The Tunnel is available for FREE! (as of yesterday) http://www.thetunnelmovie.net/
It may not be a new story but it is holds the torch of Australian cinema. Monumental.
This film embodies “Passion for Film”, an original route to funding followed by a well produced product. A movie worth seeing! One of the good Aussie horrors.

Primal (2010)
Anja and five friends join anthropology student on a journey to study a remote ancient rock painting. Their excitement vanishes when Mel becomes delirious after skinny-dipping in the waterhole. Feverish bleeding confused she physically and mentally regresses to a vicious predatory state. Their only hope of survival is through a cave where Anja learns too late the meaning of the ancient rock art they came to study.
A surprisingly decent indie Aussie horror by Josh Reed. Not a bad debut. Simple and yet delivered the camping thrills. So-so acting. Krew Boylan did all the work, she was great as Mel. The bites, stone and machete gore was pretty good. It’s an absolutely stupid film, but better than most horrors from down under. Anyone can do/make this.
They turn to ravage beasts, like animals they avoid fire. Why’d i give this an “ok” rating? Three words: tentacle rape scene.
A decent semi-low budget horror from down under. I wouldn’t buy it or pay to watch it.
