The Raid: Redemption (2011) aka Serbuan maut
A SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.
Violent beauty! Action that cuts like a razor blade!
Gareth Evans went on a journey to document Indonesian martial arts… which gave birth to two amazing action flicks.
The Raid is tough as nails.
In the heart of Jakarta lies a building that has become a haven for the crooked. Feared by all, even by the police. A ragtag SWAT team is sent in to capture the big boss and cleanse the infamous tower.
TRIVIA: The original title “Serbuan Maut” means Deadly Invasion in English.
Lead actor Iko Uwais teams up once again with write/director Evans, after their success with Merantau (2009), to bring us this spectacle of violence. An action packed bag of guns, knives and fists.
I would like to give special mention to the performance of Yayan Ruhian aka MAD DOG. That motherfucker was BRUTAL!!! Hands down.
The fighting was a beautiful manly ballet. A relentless assault on the senses and gives us a thrill most “Hollywood action films” cannot deliver. The tension of survival and mysterious characters are just some of the things that give this film that added “umph!”.
The story was simple and went straight to the biscuits. It’s an action movie that delivers the goods. There were some (expected) twists along the way, which didn’t harm the film. The cinematography and lighting was great.
WOAH! I loved it every time they shot a guy in the face. Point fucking blank.
I could go on and on about the fighting and awesomeness of this manly man film, there was just so much… maybe even “too much”.
Was there anything bad about it? Well… everyone knows how to fight! I snickered every time some random guy would bust out some pretty awesome moves. Unbelievable but good nevertheless.
Action fans: The Raid is a must-see.

Dear Wendy (2005)
A young boy in a nameless, timeless American town establishes a gang of youthful misfits united in their love of guns and their code of honor.
Written by Lars Von Trier -> boom!
There was something about this that captivates… and whispers responsible gun use?
Dick develops a dark obsession with firearms and later on creates a secret club called “The Dandies”. Oddly enough they practice pacifism??? Yes, the inevitable will happen. The group of young outcast find their calling and jump head on to destiny.
Jaime Bell did a great job at the helm. His (loser) buddies were superb! I remembered a few childhood “friend” films. They all had something viewers can hold on to. Bill Pullman plays the crooked lawman.
“The reason why our partners could only be fired in the darkness of the old mine and could never be exposed to full light and thereby be woken up. Because once awoken nothing could stop them from following their true nature and killing.”
Guns make the world an evil place…
TRIVIA: In Lars von Trier’s script, the main characters were in their 20s. Director Thomas Vinterberg decided to change it, so they became children instead. Lars von Trier later stated that he thought the age change was a brilliant idea.
Principles versus rules versus friendship versus life. There’s a time to fight, and it is now. Responsibility and accountability revolve around this tale of fantasy, dependability and teen angst.
The OST was good too! The Zombies?!?!? - hell yeah! “She’s Not There”
I was tremendously impressed with the story and visual accompaniment. The narrative aspect is always a tickler for me. The suspense and tension was delivered well. Weapons reassure holders, but ultimately the choice is (literally) in their hands.
What name would you give your gun?
“Wake up…”

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)
Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker.
The original title Män som hatar kvinnor directly translated means “Men Who Hate Women”.
Author Stieg Larsson had witnessed a rape in his youth and it manifested in this book/film of 3. The series was suppose to have consisted of 6 books, sadly Larsson passed away before completion.
Let’s get down to business. YES the original was better. This stylized glossy version by David Fincher was good in Hollywood standards. THEY CHANGED SHIT! Need i say more? Oh yeah, big stars… so fucking what?
The intro was pretty sweet though…
My thoughts on the Lisbeths: Take Noomi to dinner, have sex with Rooney.
Rooney Mara rocked my world! She held her own, along side Hollywood superman Daniel Craig. No love for Craig? - He doesn’t need the praise, he;s fucking 007 for fucks sake.
TRIVIA: The piercings (including multiple ear, eyebrow, and nipple piercings) that Rooney Mara sports as Lisbeth Salander are real, not cosmetic simulations. Mara got the piercings in a series of sessions in Brooklyn and Sweden.
I almost gave this an “Ok” but because of Rooney Mara, i gave it a “Win”.
And to CLARIFY: It’s called the Millennium Trilogy. TRILOGY -> meaning there are 3, Based on the original Swedish literature/films of the same name:
The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) aka Män som hatar kvinnor
The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) aka Flickan som lekte med elden
The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (2009) aka Luftslottet som sprängdes
(I apologize for the comment earlier/above, but if people were’t idiots i would’t have to be an asshole about these details.)
Bottom line is: had i not seen the original films i’d think this was genius. But it is a “version of”, with Trent Reznor (ooooh wow he’s so cool sarcasm).
Great film, good actors, amazing directing… God bless Hollywood.

Transit (2012)
A family on a road trip is stalked by criminals who stashed stolen money in their car.
Jim Caviezel… what happened to you?
So a family goes on a trip and criminals decide to hide their stash in the baggage… The chase begins. Pretty straight forward and simple, we’ve all seen this before. Nothing new… and what the fuck was with the baddies? Nothing about this seemed/looked believable. Sad.
Attempts at twists were pathetic. Some pretty shots here and there… I was not amused. Cool car though.
Me no gusta.

A Lonely Place to Die (2011)
A group of mountaineers in the Scottish Highlands discover a kidnapped girl and are pursued by her captors.
Off to the mountains! For some R&R and… death.
Directed by Julian Gilbey, who surprised me with his rowdy and violent Rise of the Footsoldier (2007).
Hell yeah! A survival thriller starring Melissa George - who came out in a bunch of horror films (I personally enjoyed): Triangle (2009), Turistas (2006), 30 Days of Night (2007) and The Amityville Horror (2005). Horror-suspense-thriller is her genre, she can sell it.
A British adventure horror looming in the realm of “it could happen” or “it’s fairly possible”. Adding fright to an already frightful separation from civilization. You’re on your own…
It’s a nail biting ride that slowly edges through the crime genre. Hikers discover a child in the forest “who’s she?” And in a blink of an eye - they fall one by one. There is little information given about the mountaineers and the criminals that surround them. The suspense bit and sudden shocks are what this film’s all about.Yeah, this ain’t an award winner. Some may even call it “stupid” - But if you’re looking for some thrills and death spills, this one’s for you.
What gave this film strength was the foley/sound effects used in death/violent scenes, you can hear ‘em bones break. I cringed a few times. Another thing that kept my interest was one of the criminals - The fat bearded one. He was very horror monster-ish.
The scenery and dialogue was… sorta typical, BUT this film got me. I can’t quite put my finger on where or how.
Watch it for what it is… a survival/chase thriller.

Dream House (2011)
Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.
From horror to psychological crime thriller… Haven’t seen one of these in a while…
BAM! Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts - No complaints here. Each brings somethin’ to the table. Brought to us by dramatic director Jim Sheridan.
It started off good, bright and clean… Dad starts to investigate, and then the darkness begins. Slowly deteriorating while he discovers the harsh truth about what really happened. So far so good…
Then the doctors come in “AH! that explains it.”- it’s like a lot of other psych-crime mysteries. Some dramatic banter between character lead to a questionable finale, that seemed rushed and unorganized. A parachute perhaps?
TRIVIA: Director Jim Sheridan fought with Morgan Creek’s head Jim Robinson continuously on the set over the shape of the script and the production of the movie. After Sheridan re-shot some scenes because they did not go down well with test audiences, Morgan Creek took away the film from Sheridan’s hands to re-cut it themselves. As a result, they created the trailer which many felt gave away too many of the movie’s secrets. As a result, Sheridan, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz refused to promote the film to the press.
And there you go… Cast, script and director WASTED by meddling producers.
It’s sad seeing a film (with potential) stumble and trip down a spiral staircase, on it’s way to the end…

Little Murder (2011) aka Szellemtanu
In post-Katrina New Orleans, a disgraced detective encounters the ghost of a murdered woman who wants to help him identify her killer.
“He talks to the dead…” Josh Lucas is the troubled drunk who looses grip with reality.
Weirdos rule! Terrence Howard took the spotlight from Josh Lucas. Hey! it’s always nice to see Cary Elwes pop up every now and again.
New Orleans has a smoothing atmosphere. BUT this was shot like a Hallmark thriller… Tacky and cheap in a way. Good cast, questionable production.
The story was quite predictable and the dialogue/delivery drove it (somewhat) to an acceptable direction. I liked it but didn’t. This could have been great - due to the ghastly effects and CHEAP impression, this sank to a level i did not expect.
I tried to give it an “OK” because of Howards Shakespearean quirks. It was not enough to save this dribble… FAIL.
“Y’know that house is haunted.” - A forgettable film.

Killer Elite (2011)
When his mentor is taken captive, a retired member of Britain’s Elite Special Air Service is forced into action. His mission: kill three assassins dispatched by their cunning leader.
Inspired by the book “The Feather Men” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. - This isn’t a remake of The Killer Elite (1975).
WOW! Jason Statham, (Spike) Clive Owen and the living legend Robert De Niro - What the fuck more can i say??? AC-fuckin’-TION!
The chase and fight scenes were superb, the story was enticing and the cast was pure GOLD. A handful of mercenaries go head to head. And we have the SAS agents and their hidden government agendas. A lot is going on here… and the kicker is it’s based on a true story - “actual” events during the 80s, conspiracy theories and secrets.
I admit, this wasn’t the best i’ve seen… but it’s good enough. I was thrilled from start to end, though there was a tiny slump midway through.
My brother pointed out Statham and Owen should have traded roles - i agree. Nevertheless this packed a punch!
Meat, in a genre full of hollow ass-kicking. A story about men who do dirty work… Someone’s gotta fill those shoes.

Mysteria (2011)
A once famous and now a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter fighting to finish his latest script with an unrealistic deadline. He finds himself in the center of a murder investigation involving a prominent politician’s wife. The surrounding events feed him inspiration for his script.
I read a BOGUS review… saying this was one you gotta sit through the end - i believed the fucker.
Written and directed by Lucius C. Kuert starring a “straight to video” cast. Poor bastard probably never saw this coming…
We follow a writer and his delusions, again??? It’s a crime mystery thriller. I get it. Reality mixed with fantasy.
Robert Miano was “ok” but nothing great. Women, ladies, mom, aunts… where are the babes? Ei! Danny Glover and Billy Zane - that should be a sign.
I rode it out, only to be disappointed in the end. Absolutely predictable ad boring as fuck. Don’t believe every review you read… except mine - send this to the rubbish bin.

30 Minutes or Less (2011)
Two fledgling criminals kidnap a pizza delivery guy, strap a bomb to his chest, and inform him that he has mere hours to rob a bank or else…
Dumb and dumb-asses! You’ll love it or hate it. It’s a ridiculous situational comedy with foul mouth sarcasm and stupidity. Birds of the same feather…
Simply put - It’s Danny McBride rude crude humor.
Rising star Jesse Eisenberg is the pizza delivery guy and Aziz Ansari plays his best friend. An odd couple, but not as odd as the relationship of McBride and Nick Swardson. Living in irresponsible denial.
I laughed out loud when the very pretty Dilshad Valsaria was called “Slumdog”. Oh man, this is asshole humor.
“Sometimes fate pulls out its big ol’ cock and slaps you right in face.”
Another “Crimedy” to add to the books. This is a “seen it before” with new comedians type of movie. It was fun while it lasted.

Drive (2011)
A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.
BRUTAL!!!! The Pusher Trilogy, Bronson (2008), Valhalla Rising (2009), Fear X (2003)!!! Fuckin’ Genius! Once again.
Based on a book by James Sallis.
Nicolas Winding Refn had me at hello. If i had ovaries… they’d explode for this awesome director!
“I don’t carry a gun. I drive.”
Ryan Gosling was absolutely stellar! The guy CAN act. Refn has a gift of turning men to badasses! Cold, calculating, violent with heart and bravado.
His co-stars and foes were as brilliant! Carey Mulligan is the epitome of cute. goddamn these blue balls, Christina Hendricks. Add to that the ferocious Ron Perlman & Albert Brooks! And the meek Bryan Cranston. What a fuckin’ cast!
You could cut the tension with a knife. Superb EVERYTHING! from the lighting to the sound to the delivery. The violent scenes were expected, in true Refn form.
TRIVIA: Nicolas Winding Refn’s first film based on a novel, and first film he did not write the script for.
Style and substance combined and mixed to an aperitif of pleasure, drama and visual pleasure before the big meal. A simple true-to-life story of choices and integrity.
There is a reason i have dubbed Nicholas Winding Refn as one of “modern cinemas finest”. THIS is proof.

The Guard (2011)
An unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring.
A racy debut by writer-director John Michael McDonagh.
The fighting Irish… officers of the law face-off against vicious dealers.
Brilliant, just fucken brilliant! Brendan Gleeson is the man! He loves women in uniform, and so do i. He had great chemistry with (equally as awesome) FBI agent Don Cheadle. Evil twats Mark Strong and Liam Cunningham did the deed and dropped some laughs. Along with a bunch of odd folks.
“I can’t tell if you’re smart or stupid”
I really enjoyed the simplicity and douchebaggery of it all. Well written, acted, produced and directed.

The River Murders (2011)
A homicide detective, Ray Liotta, while investigating a series of murders becomes the prime suspect when the FBI uncovers his close personal ties to all the victims.
Oh boy, a serial killer flick! hmmm… sauce was weak!
A lighter depiction of the mystery chase thriller we get from the usual Hollywood blockbuster. Suffice to say, this was a “B”.
Ray Liotta is the man caught between suspicion and guilt. I wasn’t too impressed with his portrayal n this one. He’s back! Christian Slater is the resident douche, and Ving Rhames rounds up the familiars.
Murder most foul, with a serial killer chase leading to the past. I laughed at the “twist”, i admit it believable… on the psychological level… but “C’mon man”.
This let me down in the end. Once was enough.

X (2011)
Holly Rowe’s retiring, kissing her callgirl life goodbye. She just has to get through her last night on the job. Shay Ryan’s a teenage runaway, broke and alone. She just has to get through her first night as a hooker. Then fate throws them together on a job that goes horribly wrong and they’re trapped on an out-of-control roller coaster ride, through the twilight zone of sex-for-sale.
Bold! A surprisingly good sex thriller from down under, Written and directed by Jon Hewitt.
A simple story told well, that’s the best way to explain this raunchy crime thriller. Typical but nevertheless entertaining. This isn’t an award winning film, it will pass the time.
The woman you love to hate! Spartacus: Blood and Sand (2010) resident blond bitch Viva Bianca seduces brilliantly in this one. And with a smokin’ hot bod to boot! She carried this quite well alongside newcomer Hanna Mangan Lawrence. Both actresses were stunning! - in a whore-ish way.
Love, money, hope, drugs, violence against women and some fucked up shit with cops. A little drama for the ladies and some boobs for the guys.
