  1. Arena (2011)

David Lord finds himself forced into the savage world of a modern gladiatorial arena, where men fight to the death for the entertainment of the online masses.

Virtual underground! Spartacus (tv) effects and action mixed with a story about “real” deathmatches… online!

Samuel “Mother Fucker” Jackson! hell yeah, who wouldn’t be excited?!? (look at how “smug” he looks on the poster) And then the film begins… It’s the same shit all over again… lame-ish fight choreography… with green screen/digital effects.

Kidnapped and forced to fight for his life is our hero Kellan Lutz. Mysterious guy, who won’t fight? typical and dreary. Well, for what it’s worth - in the end battle he looked pretty fuckin’ badass (yeah, even with the tiger growl sfx).

One character did shine. Swedish actress Katia Winter disrobed and reached out her sympathetic hand. Who is this chick??? For a manly-man flick she seemed to fit in it well.

There was a (predictable) twist in the end and all the pieces fall in- the chaotic and unexplained beginning. Cheap. And the “executioner”… oh my… what a pussy.

This was dreadful… BUT, I enjoyed both Spactacus series (style/effects) and was in the mood for something light, simple and stupid. An obvious “fail” i (sorta) enjoyed - in a Steven Segal/Chuck Norris kind of way.

It’s the usual kill or be killed themed action flick. Nothing new, nothing special.

  3. Gantz (2011)

After trying to rescue a man on the subway tracks, two teens wake up in a room dominated by a mysterious black sphere that sends them to hunt down and kill aliens hiding on Earth.

Based on the Manga by Hiroya Oku. Which was made into a TV series Gantz (2004) and is now brought to the big screen with this live action adaptation.

Starring one of my new favorite actors Kenichi Matsuyama, better known as “L” of the Death Note Saga. Fans should also check out his performance in Detroit Metal City (2008).

Note: I have not read the manga nor have i followed the tv show.

From what i saw I thought this was a decent film. I was entertained by the story, the action and the unexpected violence. The CGI, costumes and prop work was not that bad. The creatures/aliens were pretty cool (quirky), at some point it reminded me of some video games, even though effects were standard (looking).

Might not be everyone’s cup-o-tea, and i don’t know if it stays true to the original material. I like these manga/anime-ish type of films. And i can’t wait to see them step it up in Gantz: Part II (2011).

    Made in Japan.

  4. 102 Minutes That Changed America (2008)

The morning of September 11, 2001 is shown through multiple video cameras in and around New York City, from the moment the first WTC tower is hit until after both towers collapse.

Mom says to turn on the T.V. and then… “It’s like a fucking movie!” is what i initially said, when the 2nd plane hit. This documentary brought me back.

There are no conspiracies and no twists, An honest and genuine experience without any biases. It’s as raw as history gets. A catastrophic moment in time, captured by a few individuals. Edited neatly and presented in a very professional way.

    Intense and brutal.

  5. Avalon (2001)

In a future world, young people are increasingly becoming addicted to an illegal (and potentially deadly) battle simulation game called Avalon. When Ash, a star player, hears of rumors that a more advanced level of the game exists somewhere, she gives up her loner ways and joins a gang of explorers. Even if she finds the gateway to the next level, will she ever be able to come back to reality?

Woah! where has this film been hiding? Great job by Japan and Poland, coming together to give us this fantasy sci-fi drama, that was very much like an anime cartoon.

This film is very slow paced and dramatic in atmosphere, a style director Mamoru Oshii is known well for. He directed one of the pinnacle films of Japanese Anime Ghost in the Shell (1995). Which was very similar to this film, He also made use of the binary code opening sequence with similar grand/orchestrated music music.

Malgorzata Foremniak did an amazing job as far as i was concerned, despite the film being dubbed in English. Basically, she looked good on film. She’s got that action sexy chick thing goin’ for her.

And now the sad parts… as i mentioned earlier this was slow paced. And there was also some confusion to where this film was going. The visual effects where like that of Sky Captain and the World of Tomorrow (2004), a lot of green/blue screen and digital editing was used. And because it was dubbed, we will never know what they were really saying. And remember that this is a drama, it may be taxing for some to watch.

It also reminded me of the successful under-the-radar Japanese Live action (CGI) sci-fi adventure film Casshern (2004). And the follow up to that film, was the fantasy adventure that i had recently reviewed, Goemon (2009).

It filled my evening, I was content with what i saw. Though i wouldn’t say “It’s the best!”, it do recommend you watch this once. You may just enjoy the steady pace as much as I did. A bit heavy, but there are some people who prefer to live in a fantasy then accept their reality.

  6. Tekken (2010)

A high-octane action movie about a young man who discovers he holds a great power and must battle a team of elite fighters who will stop at nothing in order to get it from him.

Oh boy, i should have seen this one coming…

So far, all movies based on Fighting games have been dismal and disappointing. This one’s no different. Most fighting games credit is the appearance of real people portraying their favorite characters. So let’s see, in the film we see: Jin, Heihachi, Kazuya, Anna & Nina Williams, Bryan Fury, Eddie Gordo, Law and Yoshimitsu. And a couple of characters i’m not sure are in the game (I’m not updated).

The acting is laughable and some of the fight scenes were done rather poorly. The script and cliche lines are just the tip of the iceberg. The costumes like: the “gloves” of Jin were a bit ridiculous and Heihachi’s “hair”, was just too funny. But no matter how bad i may say this film is, it remains true to the video game. And having said that i must recommend this to fans.

This video game turned B-movie… may be funny and/or entertaining for some.

Based on the multi million selling fighting games series created by Namco.
