  1. Take Shelter (2011)

Plagued by a series of apocalyptic visions, a young husband and father questions whether to shelter his family from a coming storm, or from himself.

Written and directed by Jeff Nichols.

    Whats wrong with daddy?

An apocalyptic psychological thriller with badass acting by the “ever so creepy faced” Michael Shannon! His loving wife is beautifully played by Jessica Chastain. Doubt versus trust - a hard mountain to climb in a relationship.

Two solid hours of asking yourself - is he mad or gifted? The cinematography builds an eerily and yet beautiful atmosphere. I watched this on a gloomy sunday afternoon = PERFECT. And even more, it rained while i was viewing this.

Uncertainty dominates this dramatic thriller. Slow paced but carries with it some realistic fear. It can happen.

And for a moment there i paused… “Is he gonna do IT???” the killer inside me woke up towards the chilling end. Potential rationale for a psychotic madman doing what he must.

The social issues are also a dominant trait of this film. Mock “the warning” but prepare to embrace it’s cruel force.

The ending was as it should be. Wonderful. It makes you think and reflect on the recent environmental tragedies that have hit humanities shores.

Tension you could cut with a knife.

  2. The Double (2011)

A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator’s murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

Richard Gere teams up with Topher Grace in this espionage hunt/game.

    Who is Cassius???

Curiosity got the best of me here… what an odd combination/couple. Grace and Gere, each with their own repertoire - how did they mesh? not so good.

This was a tame spy mystery. The action was “meh” and the twists were predictable. To be honest, there really wasn’t a twist, we join the young detective pick up clues to what the fuck is going on around him.

The acting was good as you would expect. Martin Sheen makes a decent appearance as well. But the overall presentation was weak. Was mom and sis their target market? Pretty boys of then and now.

Gere rocked the wristwatch wire well! I want one. But besides that… this was a “light” spy thriller. You can make Granpa watch this without fear of him collapsing from an audio visual heart attack.

    Russians = WHAT???

When past and present collide, oh so gently.

  3. The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo (2011)

Journalist Mikael Blomkvist is aided in his search for a woman who has been missing for forty years by Lisbeth Salander, a young computer hacker.

The original title Män som hatar kvinnor directly translated meansMen Who Hate Women”.

Author Stieg Larsson had witnessed a rape in his youth and it manifested in this book/film of 3. The series was suppose to have consisted of 6 books, sadly Larsson passed away before completion.

Let’s get down to business. YES the original was better. This stylized glossy version by David Fincher was good in Hollywood standards. THEY CHANGED SHIT! Need i say more? Oh yeah, big stars… so fucking what?

The intro was pretty sweet though…

My thoughts on the Lisbeths: Take Noomi to dinner, have sex with Rooney.

Rooney Mara rocked my world! She held her own, along side Hollywood superman Daniel Craig. No love for Craig? - He doesn’t need the praise, he;s fucking 007 for fucks sake.

TRIVIA: The piercings (including multiple ear, eyebrow, and nipple piercings) that Rooney Mara sports as Lisbeth Salander are real, not cosmetic simulations. Mara got the piercings in a series of sessions in Brooklyn and Sweden.

I almost gave this an “Ok” but because of Rooney Mara, i gave it a “Win”.

And to CLARIFY: It’s called the Millennium Trilogy. TRILOGY -> meaning there are 3, Based on the original Swedish literature/films of the same name:

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) aka Män som hatar kvinnor

The Girl Who Played with Fire (2009) aka Flickan som lekte med elden

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest (2009) aka Luftslottet som sprängdes

(I apologize for the comment earlier/above, but if people were’t idiots i would’t have to be an asshole about these details.)

Bottom line is: had i not seen the original films i’d think this was genius. But it is a “version of”, with Trent Reznor (ooooh wow he’s so cool sarcasm).

Great film, good actors, amazing directing… God bless Hollywood.

  4. Unbreakable (2000)

A suspense thriller with supernatural overtones that revolves around a man who learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.

I revisited my FAVORITE M. Night Shyamalan movie!!! Yes, it appealed to me the most.

If there is no villain then what is the meaning of hero?

Security Guard aka “caped crusader” Bruce Willis and “born bad” Samuel L. Jackson go head to head, in this discovery of meaning and purpose.

Two characters with their own quirks: Willis aka David Dunn, has that (Marvel) superhero name like Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Matt MurdocK etc. first and last name start with the same letter. And his color is “Green”, seen in his surroundings and wardrobe.

Glass Man, Elijah was one to remember. His color scheme was obviously violet/purple, villainous. His “glass” like form gave life to the film. Pity comes first and then the horns come out and reveal his true intentions.

TRIVIA: Several scenes relating to the “Mr. Glass” character involve glass:

    • as a newborn, he’s primarily seen reflected in mirrors
    • as a young child, he’s seen reflected in a blank TV screen
    • he leaves his calling card on the windshield of David Dunn’s car
    • he’s reflected in a glass frame in his art gallery
    • his walking stick is made of glass
    • comic books seen behind him in one scene are of Thor, who for a time in the 1980s, had a curse upon him where his bones were brittle and would break easily.

One thing i really enjoyed the most was the attempt in shooting this just like a comic book. The framing was spot on in some essential scenes. The suspense built up well and the “reveal” was just right. This isn’t the usual special effects riddles hero flick. This is a smart one, that peeps into the “reason”.

    We all have our kryptonite.

Tragedies turn some into heroes… we embrace things… it is OUR choice… isn’t that choice interesting?

  5. Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy (2011)

In the bleak days of the Cold War, espionage veteran George Smiley is forced from semi-retirement to uncover a Soviet agent within MI6’s echelons.

Based on the best-selling novel by John le Carré. An imaginative chronicle of his time in the British intelligence service.

    Sit down and LISTEN.

Brought to us by the storytelling genius behind Let the Right One In (2008)- Tomas Alfredson, his 1st English film.

Gary Oldman GOLD!!! A king needs knights: Colin Firth, “tough as nails” Tom HardyMark Strong, Toby Jones, “legendary” John Hurt, “Sherlock” Benedict Cumberbatch and many more the queen has to offer! What a tremendous cast.

Digging in your own backyard is never easy when the dogs are out.

The hunters and the hunted, which is what? FUCK ALL OTHER ESPIONAGE FILMS! This is the real deal, so to speak. Mumbles, whispers and secrets fuel this dramatic mystery behind closed doors.

How far it this from the truth? No one knows but the truth. Twists and turns with words and actions, betrayal is no stranger to this genre of film.

TTSS investigates primary players in a game so few have played. Jumps in scenes are colored in by excellent cinematography. The script and dialogue felt real and sluggish. “Aaaw no, old men talking” - It ain’t all explosions, babes and gadgets. Some viewers may/might give up at the halfway point - BELIEVE ME, the payoff is in the end.

Distrust, loyalty and mischief shadow the entire film and all it’s characters. I loved the atmosphere of constant doubt.

The ending was quite satisfying and my eyes were once again “wide open”.

Trust only movement. Life happens at the level of events, not of words.

  6. Dream House (2011)

Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.

From horror to psychological crime thriller… Haven’t seen one of these in a while…

BAM! Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts - No complaints here. Each brings somethin’ to the table. Brought to us by dramatic director Jim Sheridan.

It started off good, bright and clean… Dad starts to investigate, and then the darkness begins. Slowly deteriorating while he discovers the harsh truth about what really happened. So far so good…

Then the doctors come in “AH! that explains it.”- it’s like a lot of other psych-crime mysteries. Some dramatic banter between character lead to a questionable finale, that seemed rushed and unorganized. A parachute perhaps?

TRIVIA: Director Jim Sheridan fought with Morgan Creek’s head Jim Robinson continuously on the set over the shape of the script and the production of the movie. After Sheridan re-shot some scenes because they did not go down well with test audiences, Morgan Creek took away the film from Sheridan’s hands to re-cut it themselves. As a result, they created the trailer which many felt gave away too many of the movie’s secrets. As a result, Sheridan, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz refused to promote the film to the press.

And there you go… Cast, script and director WASTED by meddling producers.

It’s sad seeing a film (with potential) stumble and trip down a spiral staircase, on it’s way to the end…

  7. Little Murder (2011) aka Szellemtanu

In post-Katrina New Orleans, a disgraced detective encounters the ghost of a murdered woman who wants to help him identify her killer.

“He talks to the dead…” Josh Lucas is the troubled drunk who looses grip with reality.

Weirdos rule! Terrence Howard took the spotlight from Josh Lucas. Hey! it’s always nice to see Cary Elwes pop up every now and again.

New Orleans has a smoothing atmosphere. BUT this was shot like a Hallmark thriller… Tacky and cheap in a way. Good cast, questionable production.

The story was quite predictable and the dialogue/delivery drove it (somewhat) to an acceptable direction. I liked it but didn’t. This could have been great - due to the ghastly effects and CHEAP impression, this sank to a level i did not expect.

I tried to give it an “OK” because of Howards Shakespearean quirks. It was not enough to save this dribble… FAIL.

“Y’know that house is haunted.” - A forgettable film.

  8. The Skin I Live In (2011) aka La piel que habito

A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.

Talk to Her (2002) and Volver (2006) Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar is back with a twisted dark medical romance. Me gusta!

Suave swagger is back! Antonio Banderas is the Frankenstein/Marquis De Sade-ish medical practitioner who keeps a deep dark secret. He was absolutely brilliant in this one.

The exquisite, stunning and talented Elena Anaya has captivated me once again. Gorgeous is an understatement. I was enamored by those beautiful eyes. Her interactions with the maid, doctor and The Cat were captivating and sinister.

I can proudly say “This is one of my favorites of 2011”. Twisted, sick and interesting. A different kind of torture horror, with a dash of mystery and suspense. Mashing up genres and delivering astonishingly sexy visuals.

Definitely a “must see”. Revenge most vile.

  9. Killer Elite (2011)

When his mentor is taken captive, a retired member of Britain’s Elite Special Air Service is forced into action. His mission: kill three assassins dispatched by their cunning leader.

Inspired by the book “The Feather Men” by Sir Ranulph Fiennes. - This isn’t a remake of The Killer Elite (1975).

WOW! Jason Statham, (Spike) Clive Owen and the living legend Robert De Niro - What the fuck more can i say??? AC-fuckin’-TION!

The chase and fight scenes were superb, the story was enticing and the cast was pure GOLD. A handful of mercenaries go head to head. And we have the SAS agents and their hidden government agendas. A lot is going on here… and the kicker is it’s based on a true story - “actual” events during the 80s, conspiracy theories and secrets.

I admit, this wasn’t the best i’ve seen… but it’s good enough. I was thrilled from start to end, though there was a tiny slump midway through.

My brother pointed out Statham and Owen should have traded roles - i agree. Nevertheless this packed a punch!

Meat, in a genre full of hollow ass-kicking. A story about men who do dirty work… Someone’s gotta fill those shoes.

  10. Panic Button (2011)

Four young people win a competition of a lifetime; Jo, Max, Gwen and Dave head off on an all expenses paid trip to New York, courtesy of social network All2gethr.com. As they board the private jet, they are asked to relinquish their mobile phones and take part in the in-flight entertainment – a new online gaming experience.

Be careful! The internet hides many secrets…

A nice little UK horror that makes us weary of our online presence. You never know who’s watching.

The frights and scares weren’t brutal or in your face. The terror comes when we face the truth. The gore was “meh…” and the shocks were predictable. One weakness was the animation on the monitor.

A so-so thriller. Decent for an indie. Saw-ish in nature… Revenge! The ending was a stretch… but forgivable. Good effort by the production and cast.

Note: The poster/dvd cover comments are not as accurate as they sound.

“Always Read The Terms & Conditions, before signing” - a tough lesson we all must learn/know.

    Be responsible.

  11. Cracks (2009)

A look at the lives and relationships among girls at an elite British boarding school.

Based on the novel by Sheila Kohler.

Trust and betrayal, between distinguished ladies.

A group of girls live in a secluded world where they are led by a beautiful and respectable lady. One day a guest arrives and skeletons are shaken out of the closet.

The mysterious and sexy Eva Green melted the screen once again, those eyes. A lot is unexplained and left to the viewers to analyze. A princess trapped in her tower. Juno Temple was excellent again. Maria Valverde plays the girl who adds spice and truth to the life of the group. Imogen Poots! Great cast.

“Those poor little girls” Women can be brutal. The scenarios presented were strong and controversial. Daring at times.

We have all been lied to, at one time or another.

At the end of it all… it was a nice viewing. A decent lady-like drama with some grit and revealing what innocent eyes can’t see.

  12. Mysteria (2011)

A once famous and now a washed-up Hollywood screenwriter fighting to finish his latest script with an unrealistic deadline. He finds himself in the center of a murder investigation involving a prominent politician’s wife. The surrounding events feed him inspiration for his script.

I read a BOGUS review… saying this was one you gotta sit through the end - i believed the fucker.

Written and directed by Lucius C. Kuert starring a “straight to video” cast. Poor bastard probably never saw this coming…

We follow a writer and his delusions, again??? It’s a crime mystery thriller. I get it. Reality mixed with fantasy.

Robert Miano was “ok” but nothing great. Women, ladies, mom, aunts… where are the babes? Ei! Danny Glover and Billy Zane - that should be a sign.

I rode it out, only to be disappointed in the end. Absolutely predictable ad boring as fuck. Don’t believe every review you read… except mine - send this to the rubbish bin.

  13. The Man From Earth (2007)

The movie begins with Professor John Oldman packing his belongings onto his truck, preparing to move to a new home.

The extraordinary sci-fi masterpiece by legendary writer Jerome Bixby. Included in the top 100 sci-fi films of all time!

“Caveman, liar or nut” John comes clean to his comrades with a strange and unbelievable confession. He is an immortal who’s been living for 14,000 years.

It’s not eye candy, it’s ear candy! Massaging the mind with logic, reason and theories.

Defying time and space. Science and religion both take blows to the face and ego.

Perfectly delivered by the wholesome bunch. David Lee Smith did a great job leading everyone. No pun intended. Or is there? Tony “Candyman” Todd rocked this! Humans talking about life, beautiful.

TRIVIA: There were no deleted scenes for this movie, only 3 deleted lines, as explained by Director Richard Schenkman in the DVD commentary.

What genre does it fall under? Sci-fi, drama, mystery, fantasy, religious, thriller… all rolled into one.

    It seems possible…

JESUS! Stellar script, it fed positive thoughts and spoke for some (people) - who think outside the box. Logic reason and truth. Fear of knowing “the truth”. What will we do when faced with the unbelievable? This is was an eye opening experience for the characters, and viewers.

A divine sci-fi! and absolutely magnetic. This revisit felt like the 1st time (edge of my seat) i watched this. Exhilarating!

  14. Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (2010)

A young girl sent to live with her father and his new girlfriend discovers creatures in her new home who want to claim her as one of their own.

A remake of Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark (1973), presented by Guillermo del Toro. Presented.

Monsters in the basement! A creepy crawly tale about a little girl and evil critters.

New home, new adventures. A young girl and her family move into an old mansion/house, they find a basement, the girl is terrorized by the fiends - which is mistaken for dementia, and finally the creatures attack!

Bailee Madison was great as Sally. The fear in her eyes and screams were convincing. This kid is gonna be great. Katie Holmes is back! and i wasn’t annoyed. Playing dad is the ever so talented Guy Pearce. Great cast!

This was like a Disney horror. The scares weren’t frightening… this was more of a fantasy thriller. Adding the tale about of the tooth fairy creatures made it interesting, and was very del Toro. The CGI work was ok (obviously a step up from the original costumed ghouls).

This is the 1st full length feature of director Troy Nixey. A mediocre debut…

It’s a fairytale horror made for kids. As a viewer i was satisfied with the results, as a horror fan… i was disappointed.
