Roadie (2011)
After 20 years on the road with Blue Oyster Cult, Jimmy Testagros returns to his hometown to life with his ailing mother. Complications arise when he falls for an old friend, who is now married to his longtime nemesis.
A different Rock & Roll film!
Ron Eldard stars in this Indie-esque story of Rock & Roll. Bobby Cannavale and Jill Hennessy are cokehead douchebags - superb casting. High school reunions are the best.
It’s a semi-heartwarming story about acceptance and self-worth. We all go through “roads” in life and sometimes those roads lead to crossroads or even worse dead ends. Roadie looks into the life of a man who thought he had it all, lost it and gained self respect along the way.
Pity is the main emotion expelled by this drama, with a charm that brings hope to those who have none.
A simple and wholesome movie with lessons and situations viewers can relate to. Perfect for this rainy Sunday afternoon.
“It was fun while it lasted” - So true.

Conan O’Brien Can’t Stop (2011)
A documentary on Conan O’Brien’s comedy tour of the U.S. and Canada after leaving his post at “The Tonight Show” and severing his relationship with NBC.
Coco on tour! The drama of late night…
It’s a musical, who would’ve thought? Conan knows how to rock! and make us all laugh. We see his behind the scenes relationships and craziness with his co-workers and friends. Life on tour is hard.
This doesn’t have a “surprise” ending or “wow” moment. It just follows Conan… and his quirkiness, anger and perseverance.
He rocks out and hangs out with: Andy Richter, Jim Carrey, Stephen Colbert, Eddie Vedder and Tenacious D!
A simple documentary about a late night hero. Somethin’ for fans.

Rakenrol (2011)
Odie and his best friend Irene are two outsiders who find a second home in the Philippine underground music scene. The two decide to form a band and put together an unlikely crew that consists of the school bully, an ex-punk-turned-barista, and a former-childstar-turned-band-manager. The film follows their misadventures as they face satanic S&M bands, samurai swindlers, narcissistic rockstars, the pretentious Philippine art community and the freakiest music video auteur ever.
Pinoy rock inside joke! If you’ve been around long enough to witness (and are aware of) the local rock scene you’d definitely get this flick. Cameos and jokes from the hay day of rock, before the demise or local Rock and Roll FM stations…
An edgy start with cuts and tunes, from the iconic to the underground. Cliche rockstars, memorable joints… and the trials and tribulations of REAL bands. A story we are all familiar with, brought to life by (writer/director) musicians Diego Castillo (Sandwich) and Quark Henares (Us-2 Evil-0).
A character film with character. It’s always great to see friends (people i work/ed with) on the big screen. (YES, i actually stepped into a theater for this one.)
TV actor Jason Abalos stars as Odie, the lovestruck hero with a passion for music.
The apple of his eye “Irene” is played by Glaiza de Castro! - who i’ve worked with (as a segment writer) in the TV prank show Laff En Roll (2010). She was absolutely stunning in this movie. Shining and capturing my gaze the entire film. She had many “looks” that reminded me of singers and renowned actresses. This girl is gonna be big!!!
The quartet is filled in by the brutish drummer Alwyn Uytingco. Shredding the guitars is Award winning actor and my former co-host Ketchup Eusebio - who never fails to entertain and bring on the laughs.
The band rubs elbows with members of a “who’s who” of local rock! The cameo list is LONG. It’s was a definite treat to see indie film masters: Jun Sabayton and Ramon Bautista rock their quirky style/characters on the big screen. And Ei! A cameo by Director extraordinaire (recovering tumblr addict) RA Rivera of Pedicab! - you can find a deleted-scene on youtube, Where he plays a radio DJ at the now debunked NU 107.5fm .
Who the hell is Jacci Rocha?!? On my… the star of the show! Literally. Diether Ocampo excellently played the douchebag of all douchebags. He embodies every rockstar asshole we love to hate, he was hilarious!
The inside scoop: This film was actually finished, and shelved for almost 3 years. Finally we get to see the fruits of labor after a long wait. Hmmm… You can sort of feel where the film got “sketchy”. Strong start with a dramatic end… somewhere along the line you can feel the film “change”. I loved the film but was not satisfied… It could have been greater.
My one bone to pick with this film would be shaky camera. Once i noticed the movement, i couldn’t let it go. It gave me a migraine…
Overall, i believe this is a MUST SEE. All biases aside, this has got a lot to offer audiences. And REMEMBER, they are musicians and NOT actors - so please be gentle with the criticisms. Kudos to everyone/good sports who were part of this socially relevant film.
“In loving memory of Filipino-Canadian film critic Alexis Tioseco.”
This film made me smile :)

Phantom of the Paradise (1974)
A disfigured musician sells his soul for the woman he loves so that she will perform his music.
Thank you Annicka! for telling me about this. A rock & roll Phantom of the Opera!!!
And as if that weren’t awesome enough, i later find out that it’s written and directed by legendary director Brian De Palma, The man responsible for the (serious) mobster classics Scarface (1983) and The Untouchables (1987).
Music starts playing and the reel rolls. A songwriter’s work is stolen by a devious man named “Swan”. He tries to get revenge an accidentally disfigures himself. He later on returns as The Phantom, who makes a deal with Swan and demands that his love interest play the leading role in his new rock opera based on the life of Faust. Only to be double crossed once again.
It’s that small and creepy fellow Paul Williams as Swan. And “hell yeah!” it’s Jessica Harper from Suspiria (1977). And then the Phantom wears his mask/helmet…
“I remember this!!! holy shit i remember watching this!”. I was probably too young to appreciate this when i first saw it. The darker (funny) not-so-romantic rock & Roll horror Phantom of the Opera. I knew of it’s existence but never knew what it was called.
*the songs/lyrics could have been better.
Something to add to my horror musical collection. Beside favorites like: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1975), Poultrygeist: Night of the Chicken Dead (2006) and Repo! The Genetic Opera (2008).
This made my night. A true classic, which has (thankfully been brought to my attention) resurfaced. A “must see” for fans of unconventional musicals and for those who like their horror on the light(er) side.
