  1. Iron Sky (2012)

The Nazis set up a secret base on the moon in 1945 where they hide out and plan to return to power in 2018.

    FUN and SMART!

Nazi’s are hiding on the Dark Side of the Moon! They have come to reclaim the earth.

A socio-political laugh-fest for the young and old. The humor was witty and dumb enough to keep me glued on the screen throughout the film. Decent effects (though a little cheesy at times) and a better story than i had initially expected…

This is rambunctious sci-fi comedy that we (modern society) can learn from. Sometimes the past sneaks up on us and reveals situations that are timeless in nature. Change begins with a smile.

Women rule! Julia Dietze shines as the “am i good or am i bad” Nazi. She was gorgeous and succeeded in making this film one to reckon with. Another lady who caught my eye was Peta Sergeant, she was superbly delectable.

All hail Udo Kier!!! Poor bastard always plays a Nazi. But the does it “like a boss”. Bringing home the bacon is comedian Christopher Kirbyas as the racially confused “Gray” James Washington. His dilemma in the film was simply hilarious.

TRIVIA: More than 10 percent of funding for this film came from fans. The donors are listed in the credits.

I loved the spoof of “youtube: Hitler Reacts to…” scene. Pop culture at its best!

The final confrontation was like a monster movie… instead of giant beasts we were given Nazi’s in a humongous space battleship! Excellent!

The horror of nuclear war is upon us! (again?) or is it? Man is his own worst enemy. We have the power to destroy ourselves, if we succumb to “orders of men”. People will always try to screw each other. Trust is something we all have to take care of… Everyone is ready to fuck each other up at a moments notice.

Some may criticize the “science” behind it all - need i remind you this is a spoof? Sit back laugh and enjoy the mindlessness.

A great comedy with substance! Believe it or not.

  2. The Raid: Redemption (2011) aka Serbuan maut

A SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.

Violent beauty! Action that cuts like a razor blade!

Gareth Evans went on a journey to document Indonesian martial arts… which gave birth to two amazing action flicks.

The Raid is tough as nails.

In the heart of Jakarta lies a building that has become a haven for the crooked. Feared by all, even by the police. A ragtag SWAT team is sent in to capture the big boss and cleanse the infamous tower.

TRIVIA: The original title “Serbuan Maut” means Deadly Invasion in English.

Lead actor Iko Uwais teams up once again with write/director Evans, after their success with Merantau (2009), to bring us this spectacle of violence. An action packed bag of guns, knives and fists.

I would like to give special mention to the performance of Yayan Ruhian aka MAD DOG. That motherfucker was BRUTAL!!! Hands down.

The fighting was a beautiful manly ballet. A relentless assault on the senses and gives us a thrill most “Hollywood action films” cannot deliver. The tension of survival and mysterious characters are just some of the things that give this film that added “umph!”.

The story was simple and went straight to the biscuits. It’s an action movie that delivers the goods. There were some (expected) twists along the way, which didn’t harm the film. The cinematography and lighting was great.

WOAH! I loved it every time they shot a guy in the face. Point fucking blank.

I could go on and on about the fighting and awesomeness of this manly man film, there was just so much… maybe even “too much”.

Was there anything bad about it? Well… everyone knows how to fight! I snickered every time some random guy would bust out some pretty awesome moves. Unbelievable but good nevertheless.

Action fans: The Raid is a must-see.

  3. Haywire (2011)

A black ops super soldier seeks payback after she is betrayed and set up during a mission.

Directed by always artsy and glossy Steven Soderbergh and starring a barrage of talent! What could go wrong? In the spy business… everything.

The relatively unknown Gina Carano stars in this action packed game of lies and deceit. She’s backed up by some (very) familiar faces, which i believe the ladies (of all ages) would cream over: Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Channing Tatum, Michael Douglas, Antonio Banderas and “holy shit! it’s Bill Paxton!”

Assassins sent on a mission, betrayal by superiors happen and the guns start blazin’!

TRIVIA: The very first and very last word of the movie are the same: “Shit.” The hero says it at the beginning, and the arch-villain at the end.

A thrill ride that went sour… Some of the fight sequences were (well choreographed) great! A whole lot goes on action-wise but fails to hit my expectations. It’s a conspiracy film with plot holes and inconsistencies (i had to read the movie info to make sure this was a Soderbergh film). Possibly the directors “weakest film” yet.

The overall pacing of the film was quite slow. This was a great platform for lead Gina Carano, who gives us a decent “female action star” performance.

My verdict? It was OK. Not bad and not good. Something to watch on a sunday afternoon. Proof that, Big stars doesn’t automatically equate to Big hit.

  4. Prometheus (2012)

A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.

Ridley Scott returns in the captains seat in this, H.R. Giger illustrated, Sci-Fi Fantasy Adventure Horror “prequel of sorts”.

TRIVIA: Producers Walter Hill and David Giler rejoin Ridley Scott for the first time in over 30 years since they first collaborated on Alien.

He announced in advance that “This will be an original movie and not a direct prequel to Alien Saga”. HAVING SAID THAT… we can forgive him for the (Obvious) Technological Anachronisms of the film (digital tech. in a prequel -> leading towards an analog film?!?!? = shut up).

“They went looking for our beginning. What they found could be our end.”

Darwin’s EVILution! Cheers to the visually stimulating and thought provoking intro. Alien engineers come to earth bearing biological science/weaponry and impregnate her with life.

The alien dies and from his death comes life… Sacrificing his/ones life for the sake of the world (sounds like someone familiar?). Playing along the lines of “Angels are actually aliens who brought us here long time ago, and would check up on us from time to time” (miraculous sighting of angels/holy beings + cave drawings/markings) - something certain people (non-theists & conspiracy theorists) like to toy with in their heads.

The “original Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2009) Noomi Rapace is the leading lady in this tale of mankind’s search for truth. “MEOW!” Charlize Theron plays the sultry cold blooded leader of the pack, loved how that outfit grabbed her bod. Guy Pearce plays Peter Weyland!!! Also seen in the viral (fake) TED talk dated 2028 - http://www.weylandindustries.com/

And “The man” Michael Fassbender is the mechanical wrench to humanities plan. Giving robotics a new face to admire.

TRIVIA: The androids’ names in the Alien films follow an alphabetical pattern: in Alien it’s Ash, in Aliens and Alien³ it’s Bishop, in Alien: Resurrection it’s Call and in this film it’s David.

The adventures main goal was to find the “answer” and fulfill the selfish desire to obtain fountain of life. Sadly our heroes bump into a “survival of the fittest” dilemma. A conflict of destruction versus creation.

In Greek mythology, the Titan Prometheus was a servant of the gods, who stole and gave to mankind the gift of fire, an immeasurable benefit that changed the human race forever. This fit so well in the story, accidentally (i assume) bumping everything else about the movie of the way… The presence of some details (actors, technologies and scenarios) were just circumstantial, and at times silly. Examples would be: the rush surgery, the “snake” encounter, removal of the helmet = scientists being dumb (and disposable) in a classic horror sci-fi “wouldn’t you agree?”. If they did not make those mistakes, we wouldn’t have a film.

“It’s what I choose to believe” hahahahaha! I enjoyed the “backslap to religion’s face”, especially in a devout country such as ours. Did we watch the same film? The moon’s name in the film is LV-223! Have you ever read the bible verse Leviticus 22:3??? Yeah, thought so. There is no god, there are beings from another place responsible for our planet being the way it is.

The black fluid/mutagen is also a star! Call it evil… call it sin, call it change. I believe it to represent (inevitable) evolution. It was such a diverse agent making many possibilities doors open. A genetic infection which affects all forms of life, forcing it to adapt/mutate into what it is not at a fast rate. Which also explains the other Alien films and comic books (tiger, bull, snake Xenomorphs).

In the end i must say, this had spectacular cinematography (SFX) and a talented lead cast. Prometheus is thought provoking film that i thought it would be. Not a 100% Alien prequel but my hunger was satisfied. Even with the inclusion of a xenomorph ancestor was included!!!

Some bitched and moaned, some were happy with the razzle dazzle, others opened their minds and see past the film. For those who hate, give it another shot. For those critical about details, might i remind you this is a sci-fi film. And to the curious, watch it.

A science fiction fans (atheist) wet dream brought to the big screen! LOVELY.

  5. Safe House (2012)

A young CIA agent is tasked with looking after a fugitive in a safe house. But when the safe house is attacked, he finds himself on the run with his charge.

A decent and mildly-impressive film by Daniel Espinosa

Guns, hidden agendas, backstabbing and then some… the usual conspiracy game played out in a chase. Africa! (south)

CIA’s most wanted Denzel “sexual chocolate” Washington and (weakie rookie) Ryan “abs” Reynolds fight and entertain us with what they got. The usual, which was really tiresome to see. Don’t get me wrong, the acting was good with two amazing lead actors… it was cool… too cool… plot twist! yeah, again.

I LOVE Vera Farmiga. and the other overshadowed actors: Sam Shephard, Brendan Gleeson, and “have you seen this boy?” Robert Patrick.

The action and scenery was brilliant. And the story “he’s good, no he’s bad, no he’s good, Awww he’s bad again?”. The film lacked that hook of originality (gimmick) that would have stuck in my head.

Imitated and duplicated, executed better than most in the genre. A Sunday flick you can watch with dad. DEN-ZEL.

  6. The Double (2011)

A retired CIA operative is paired with a young FBI agent to unravel the mystery of a senator’s murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin.

Richard Gere teams up with Topher Grace in this espionage hunt/game.

    Who is Cassius???

Curiosity got the best of me here… what an odd combination/couple. Grace and Gere, each with their own repertoire - how did they mesh? not so good.

This was a tame spy mystery. The action was “meh” and the twists were predictable. To be honest, there really wasn’t a twist, we join the young detective pick up clues to what the fuck is going on around him.

The acting was good as you would expect. Martin Sheen makes a decent appearance as well. But the overall presentation was weak. Was mom and sis their target market? Pretty boys of then and now.

Gere rocked the wristwatch wire well! I want one. But besides that… this was a “light” spy thriller. You can make Granpa watch this without fear of him collapsing from an audio visual heart attack.

    Russians = WHAT???

When past and present collide, oh so gently.

  7. Guyver (1991)

A young man discovers a mechanical device that merges with his own body, turning him into a cyborg superhero. When strange creatures start appearing, trying to take the device back, he begins to uncover a secret plot to genetically engineer terrifying monsters.

Based on a Japanese comic book known as “Bio-Booster Armor Guyver”.

Mighty Morphin’ costumes and cheesy shit… with crap 80s humor and comedic sound effects - i knew i’ve seen this dribble before.

A cheesy sci-fi FAIL. What a tragedy. The quality was for UHF television… The “fights” were as bad as the acting, absolutely horrendous.

Hey! it’s Luke Skywalker Mark Hamill - that’s about it. A mediocre film with no saving grace… wait the guyver costume was sorta true to the original comic.

I would like to THANK MY COUSIN FOR GIVING ME THIS SHIT. Another one to add to the “avoid” list.

“The Guyver” = way to go America! it’s GUYVER. I was put off by the “comedy” elements… Tacky and lame.

    This was fucking stupid.

  8. Chronicle (2012)

Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.

Origins: Good and Evil collide!!! Sparked by angst, abuse and power!

I honestly thought it was gonna be a big budget Hollywood B.S. flick…

What a thrilling surprise it was to catch this little film, about great power and responsibility. I mocked the idea at first… the final product got my respect.

The new boys! “still waters run deep” Andrew (Dane DeHaan), “Best dude” Matt (Alex Russell) and “Mr. President” Steve (Michael B. Jordan) fly high and touch the sky. An impressive starring debut for the 3 gentlemen. I had my initial doubts and worries, In the end they did the job well.

Written & Directed by relative unknowns, this superpower film kicked ass! in more ways than one. BUT… you know you’ve seen this before… Tweaked a bit and reoriented for the American market… Akira (1988) - TELL ME I’M NOT RIGHT? I DARE YOU.

Sci-fi, action, adventure, fantasy and drama!!! What a mouthful.

Bullied boys and Cool kids, let evil and good brood. The roots of madness and kindness are captured by the buddy trio and their fantastic journey within themselves. We all want powers! Jealousy got the best of me… damn.

The “captured footage” angle has been drawn out and so has the “superpower” genre. How did this film kickass? Good writing and directing. The visual effects were neat and the action (in the end) was epic! Akira!

Not a shaky as some would think. Clean edits between different video recorders and security cams remind people that this is a “fun film”.

They’re sold me my own dream - it’s been a while since i’ve felt this way about a film. Especially one that i initially dissed/mocked (without proof). I am now a believer, no longer a doubter.

Sometime y’gotta give a film a chance, it may surprise you - with its inner strength.

  9. Underworld Awakening (2012)

The vampire warrioress Selene escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Kate Beckinsale does it a 3rd time! That Body DAMN.

The vamp-wolf franchise has reached the stratosphere!!! Like most films that stretch their time, diluted by sequel after sequel and the “Lycan ” prequel.

It was like a sic-fi horror video game. The story simply does not compute… Visually it was as brilliant as it’s predecessors. Action and production was great. There was a “fun factor” despite the dryness of written content.

A child is now in the mix - yeah, that was original. It was ok for what it was… we all know what to expect… Hollywood.

  10. Gantz 2: Perfect Answer (2011)

Masaru Kato’s death changes Kei Kurono’s view of life completely. He decides to keep fighting until he earns 100 points so that he can bring back Kato. Gantz calls back Ayukawa and other Gantz alumni who’d left once after scoring 100 points. In the meantime Kurono works on getting 100 points. But before Kurono succeeds in resurrecting Kato, Kato unexpectedlyturns up.

The follow up to the live action feature Gantz (2011).

Gantz comes full circle, in this battle between evil and good. Choices must be made and decisions topple the fate of life and death.

Someone MUST die! The aliens this time around were not as entertaining or amusing. A lot of human drama between old and new characters. An investigator becomes part of the fray and witnesses the impossible.

Awesome special effects and shootout “draw” scenes. But this wash’t as good as the first Gantz. It lacked that “wow” factor. The baddies in the first were way better than this one. They take it down to a human level, this time around. The story is good enough to keep viewers glued ‘til the very end. Finally, it all makes sense.

The end was as it should be. Neat and tidy.

I suggest/think that the best way to appreciate this Manga turned Live Action is to MARATHON both films, and see it as a whole.

HERE is my review of Gantz (2011).

  11. Transit (2012)

A family on a road trip is stalked by criminals who stashed stolen money in their car.

Jim Caviezel… what happened to you?

So a family goes on a trip and criminals decide to hide their stash in the baggage… The chase begins. Pretty straight forward and simple, we’ve all seen this before. Nothing new… and what the fuck was with the baddies? Nothing about this seemed/looked believable. Sad.

Attempts at twists were pathetic. Some pretty shots here and there… I was not amused. Cool car though.

    Me no gusta.

  12. Blackthorn (2011)

In Bolivia, Butch Cassidy (now calling himself James Blackthorn) pines for one last sight of home, an adventure that aligns him with a young robber and makes the duo a target for gangs and lawmen alike.

Westerns are back! This time takin’ it the slow route. The sights and sounds of a time of guns and thieves.

An outlaw takes refuge in a land far far away ‘til his past catches up with him. Payback can be a bitch. Making up for past dues is honorable and yet not forgivable. Out time too shall pass.

    Getting one over the other.

Veteran Sam Shepard is Butch Cassidy! His reckless youth taught him to be a better man. A very lucky man. Alongside him is Spanish actor Eduardo Noriega. They trek the land in search for treasure. Crooks and cons.

Overall this was a pleasant treat. Steady and dramatic. A good western with nice shots and scenery. The story was neat and the actors were convincing.

A film your dad might want to see.

  13. Bellflower (2011)

Two friends spend all their free time building flame-throwers and weapons of mass destruction in hopes that a global apocalypse will occur and clear the runway for their imaginary gang “Mother Medusa”.

Directed, Written and Starring Evan Glodell. Bravo!

“Lord Humungus cannot be defied.” - Lord Humungus.

Woodrow and Aiden are best buds who love Mad Max 2: The Road Warrior (1981). So much so, that they make their own flame-throwers and ride a modified “Mother Medusa” mobile. The apocalypse is nigh!

And then… the end begins… One falls madly in love with a quirky and fun blonde. The dynamic duos friendship is put to the test. Love is a BITCH.

TRIVIA: No functionality of the Medusa car was faked during filming. The real life the car is equipped with two flamethrowers, smoke screen, a bleach drift-kit, adjustable rear suspension, and 3 surveillance cameras; all controlled from the dashboard.

So why the love? This film hit my gut in a way i could never have imagined. A wicked apocalyptic journey with lessons on love and… Friendship - The key element in this fantastic indie fantasy.

I loved the car and the texture of the film. Gritty and gnarly. Badass, and yet carries a torch for romance and life.

Physical and Emotional devastation! The acting, script and overall production was superb. The use of words like “dude” and “awesome” made it easier for (me) audiences to relate to the content.

Women can be the end of all things men know. Portrayed in this film with violence and ruthlessness of love. The tattoo bit was harsh! Sometime we need to listen to our friends, they may just save us from impending doom.

“You are Lord Fucking Humongous: the Master of Fire, the King of the Wasteland.”

Imagine being trapped in a gray world between friendship and love. What would you choose?

  14. Warrior (2011)

The youngest son of an alcoholic former boxer returns home, where he’s trained by his father for competition in a mixed martial arts tournament - a path that puts the fighter on a collision corner with his older brother.

They’ve come to FIGHT! and FIGHT they will!

MMA has come a long way from something shunned in a guilty pleasure corner, slowly inching it’s way into mainstream media.

Vicious brethren foes are Tom Hardy and Joel Edgerton - both giving commendable performances. The drama and confrontations were grand and superb. Nick Nolte destroyed me with his shaky/regretful old man eyes. I almost shed a tear. The man is a living legend.

WHAT??? Kurt Angle as the ultimate asskicker “KOBA”! WWE fans will love this.

This surprised me with a left hook! The story had guts, the battles had glory and in the end my heart was full. Hope, Love, Respect and Pride are all put in a ring and guarantee to entertain.

    Wanna fight? You got it!
