The Raid: Redemption (2011) aka Serbuan maut
A SWAT team becomes trapped in a tenement run by a ruthless mobster and his army of killers and thugs.
Violent beauty! Action that cuts like a razor blade!
Gareth Evans went on a journey to document Indonesian martial arts… which gave birth to two amazing action flicks.
The Raid is tough as nails.
In the heart of Jakarta lies a building that has become a haven for the crooked. Feared by all, even by the police. A ragtag SWAT team is sent in to capture the big boss and cleanse the infamous tower.
TRIVIA: The original title “Serbuan Maut” means Deadly Invasion in English.
Lead actor Iko Uwais teams up once again with write/director Evans, after their success with Merantau (2009), to bring us this spectacle of violence. An action packed bag of guns, knives and fists.
I would like to give special mention to the performance of Yayan Ruhian aka MAD DOG. That motherfucker was BRUTAL!!! Hands down.
The fighting was a beautiful manly ballet. A relentless assault on the senses and gives us a thrill most “Hollywood action films” cannot deliver. The tension of survival and mysterious characters are just some of the things that give this film that added “umph!”.
The story was simple and went straight to the biscuits. It’s an action movie that delivers the goods. There were some (expected) twists along the way, which didn’t harm the film. The cinematography and lighting was great.
WOAH! I loved it every time they shot a guy in the face. Point fucking blank.
I could go on and on about the fighting and awesomeness of this manly man film, there was just so much… maybe even “too much”.
Was there anything bad about it? Well… everyone knows how to fight! I snickered every time some random guy would bust out some pretty awesome moves. Unbelievable but good nevertheless.
Action fans: The Raid is a must-see.

Shaolin (2011) aka Xin shao lin si
China is plunged into strife as feuding warlords try to expand their power by warring over neighboring lands. Fuelled by his success on the battlefield, young and arrogant Hao Jie sneers at Shaolin’s masters after killing a rival warlord on their temple grounds. But the glory comes before a fall. His own family is wiped out in an unexpected turn of events and Hao is forced to take refuge with the monks. As the civil unrest spreads and the people suffer, Hao and the Shaolin masters are forced to take a fiery stand against the evil warlords. They launch a daring plan of rescue and escape.
Payback is a bitch! A story of revenge and enlightenment, presented in a grand fashion of top production and well executed Kung-Fu fight choreography.
Two big name action stars in one epic tale. Andy Lau is the man set on changing his world and himself. Joining him on this inner peace adventure is living legend Jackie Chan, as the humble cook.
A blend of action, fantasy and drama. It’s a action blockbuster with big names but mediocre in substance. What happened? As beautiful as it was this turned out to be quite mediocre. With some wholesome humor care of master Jackie Chan. Nicholas Tse plays the deceitful Cao Man, who was quite badass (in a cheesy villainous way).
This film seemed a little too safe (for me). The action and scenery cinematography was superb, but the story lacked that push to make it great. I liked the ruthlessness of the characters and the wisdom passed on to viewers. There is some good stuff here!
A nice movie the whole family can enjoy. Action our dads would love, drama that would break moms heart and a story that teaches youngsters lessons in karma and repentance.

Oldboy (2003) aka Oldeuboi
After being kidnapped and imprisoned for 15 years, Oh Dae-Su is released, only to find that he must find his captor in 5 days.
Based on Japanese Manga “Oldboy” by Nobuaki Minegishi and Garon Tsuchiya.
Vengeance has a name! Chan-wook Park mind fucked me, for the first time, with this ultra-violent incest driven downward spiral of cunning revenge and unimaginable decisions. Fuckin’ beautiful!
That one-take scene in the hallway/corridor astounds me to this very day! Bravo!
The 1st of the “The Vengeance Trilogy” i set eyes on. I was blown away and immediately watched: Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and Sympathy for Lady Vengeance (2005). Oldboy was the film that sparked my interest in Korean cinema, and it’s my favorite of the 3.
Min-sik Choi displaying a performance of a lifetime. Drop the hammer!!! We have a winner. I highly recommend you check him out in the equally as brilliant performance in I Saw the Devil (2010), which i dubbed “Asian horror-thriller of 2010!”
An elegant dramatic thriller with humanity at its darkest. I absolutely love this movie.
This film was love at first sight… which began an obsession. Wanna see a fucked up “great” film? Grab a copy of Oldboy NOW!
“Laugh and the world laughs with you. weep, and you weep alone.”

Confessions (2010) aka Kokuhaku
A psychological thriller of a grieving mother turned cold-blooded avenger with a twisty master plan to pay back those who were responsible for her daughter’s death.
Thank You Followers! Awesome suggestion, you guys know the stuff that makes my motor run.
Based on the novel by Kanae Minato.
“Milk will never be the same, in my eyes.”
Dark and disturbing… poetic justice! Confessions of… everyone, make and break us. The comedy and tragedy of life, as it always has been. This was a brilliant gem of a film, up ‘til now i still think (personal) what ifs.
The scenery and slow-mo shots were BEAUTIFUL! This put me up and down and shook my morals from side to side. The mysteries of each character unfolds and explodes on screen.
Acting-wise this was above the usual. I felt them… Some post edit flaws but the grunt of it all falls on the “reveals”, great stuff here!
At first i was “oh no, it’s another drama” but then “holy shit!”. It’s a different kind of horror. This got me thinking and i love it for that.
More than just your average drama mystery thriller. Teachers know best, and are teachers for a reason. Respect, Life. This has easily become one of my recent favorites!

Dream Home (2010) aka Wai dor lei ah yut ho
Cheng Li-sheung is a young, upwardly mobile professional finally ready to invest in her first home. But when the deal falls through, she is forced to keep her dream alive - even if it means keeping her would-be neighbors dead.
“Oh, who are the people in your neighborhood?
In your neighborhood?
In your neighborhood?
Say, who are the people in your neighborhood?
The people that you meet each day”Problems at home? Kill the problem. A dark and violent look into a time where battle for one’s own domicile is a necessity.
A tale of obsession and demented determination. Josie Ho was spectacular as the obsessive tenant. She was a big piece that just fit perfectly.
The effects and gore were above par as well. All in all this was a well presented horror. Shallow (story) in the end, and yet manages to bring the message of madness. The death/torture scenes are worth a look.
Director Ho-Cheung Pang has given birth to a respectable modern day Hong Kong horror, an effective one at that. I like these “enclosed” condominium/home set horrors, makes me feel closer to the fear/horror.
I do not fear ghosts or monsters, i fear mankind.

Girls Zombie (2011)
Maki and her underling yakuza boyfriend, Akio, have a dream to live together by stealing the money from the black marketing Akio’s group has engaged in. All goes according to plan until Akio dies when one of his partners in crime, Kenji, betrays him. Left alone, Maki is caught by the group and taken to the place where the money’s hidden, which unbeknownst to them is a forest full of zombies, buried alive.
What the fuck did i just waste my time on?!? I suddenly remembered Sexual Parasite: Killer Pussy (2004) - oh boy that was a memorable one. This one was dismal and a stretch at… i don’t even fuckin’ know.
It’s like Versus (2000) but far more shittier, and we all know how shitty Versus was. Add some nudity and amateur porn cinematography.
So… A woman is dragged into some Yakuza deal. They bury a body and find shit, then zombies attack… They take shelter in an empty building. They decide to fight and have sex… Did i forget to mention the horrible acting?
Sexually driven, the horror elements and story are so shallow, cheap and “borrowed”. Just like Killer Pussy… Nothing new. Somethin’ for hardcore pervs… I couldn’t wait for this to end.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) aka Joheunnom nabbeunnom isanghannom
The story of two outlaws and a bounty hunter in 1940s Manchuria and their rivalry to possess a treasure map while being pursued by the Japanese army and Chinese bandit
Blazin’ guns of… Asia! A spaghetti western with a twist. Non-stop fights, chases and explosions! with some interesting music and funny characters. A genuine Asian western!
Stunning work, as usual, by director Jee-woon Kim. The genius behind A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and my choice for Asian horror of 2010: I Saw the Devil (2010). Need i say more? He’s got an eye for things i enjoy.
Bridging 3 nations. Japan, China and Korean come together to bring us this crazy adventure of 3 men. And able to stand by the title of “the most expensive movie in South Korean cinema history” (as per 2009), the work and effort paid off.
The Good: Woo-sung Jung from The Warrior (2001), does great as the saddled righteous hero.
The Bad: Storm Shadow! Byung-hun Lee was as amazing as he was in I Saw the Devil (2010) and Three… Extremes (2004) “Cut”.
The Weird: Kang-ho Song from Thirst (2009), Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and The Host (2006). All his movies have impressed.
WOW! what and spectacular trio! Needless to say they hit it outta the park. The production was a well oiled machine, the story was interesting and the overall feel was great! This was one hell of a fun ride.
TRIVIA: Director Jee-woon Kim says he’d like this to be called a “kimchee western”, after the Korean food made with fermented cabbages. He says he thinks the plot and film are spicy and vibrant, like the Korean culture and people.
It took me a while to grab a copy, i’m glad i finally got to revisit this crazy action flick! This is a fun film, it’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear.

Guinea Pig 3: He Never Dies (1986)
A men gets depressed because his girlfriend has dumped him for a friend. He tries to attempt suicide but to no avail, so he decides to scare the guy that stole his girl, by throwing his own guts at him.
The comedic Guinea Pig, livelier and with an actual story… and dialogue. And the punk music at the beginning sets the tone. This one’s got some character development and drama.
Painful to watch, in a good way, just like the 1st 2. Great prosthetic work. When he was first torturing himself i didn’t know whether to cringe or laugh, what an boob. The man who cannot die also happens to be an idiot.
After chopping his hand off, he decides he wants it back and tapes it. The weird hallucinations soon kick in, he decides to phone a friend. Some romance is thrown in and then i start thinking “this isn’t what i expected”. Too much stalling with the drama and comedy. Including a crazy credits.
The acting was very noon-time television. Cheesy (cheap looking) and yet disturbingly entertaining, and casually laughing at the J-horror gore genre.
“Dude you’re doing it wrong” dementedly hilarious. For those with a tough stomach.
What unappetizing feast awaits us in??? Guinea Pig 4: Mermaid in a Manhole (1988)

Guinea Pig 1: Devil’s Experiment (1985)
A group of men who kidnap and graphically torture a young woman in as many ways as possible, as part of an experiment on the human body’s threshold of pain. The different forms of pain consist of kicking, claw, unconscious, a sound, skin, burn, worms, guts, and needle.
And so begins my 6 film Guinea Pig marathon! This is as raw as it gets. Vhs cam quality that was probably shot next door. Brutal and visually perverse, without the aid of fancy CGI effects. Pretty decent for it’s time.
“This is a report of an experiment on the breaking point of bearable pain and the corrosion of people’s senses…”
Oh Japan, i freakin’ appreciate breaking the boundaries of decency and explicit content. A true Japanese exploitation gore-horror film.
The film is all just about 3 guys beating up a girl, and using different (segmented) tactics to break her. The (minimal dialogue) acting was very 80s, i couldn’t help but snicker. Vicious but funny at times, but also gave it that grimy realistic feel. Unpolished.
A snuff film, based on pain experiments. It’s a torture flick, plain and simple.
This is just the 1st, let’s see what’s in store for our stomachs next? Guinea Pig 2: Flowers of Flesh and Blood (1985).

Gokudô kyôfu dai-gekijô: Gozu(2003) aka Gozu
Minami, a member of the Azamawari crew, highly respects Ozaki who has saved his life in the past. Chairman Azamawari is unsympathetic to Ozaki’s little outbursts and secretly orders Minami to take Ozaki to a disposal facility in the city of Nagoya. There, the fate of these two follows a twisted path filled with violence, mother’s milk, strange locals, and ultimately the disappearance of Ozaki’s corpse which Minami now desperately tries to recover.
Another bizarre Yakuza horror, that guarantees to tickle your sick desires. Thrown to us by one of Asian cinemas/J-horror’s provocative master of disgust, my hero, Takashi Miike.
There is something terribly wrong with this man… And i like it! He’s the Asian David Lynch and David Cronenberg. Cerebral, visceral, ambiguous, perverse, violent and sometimes unexplained.
Comedy and horror have never been woven together so well. A step by step adventure that moves at a steady pace and introduces viewers to the odd characters of this world. There are some “what the fuck just happened?!?” scenes and a twisted ending only the sick-in-the-head can get.
We are treated to extreme violence, sexual taboos and the un/usual Miike stuff:
- Mothers milk
- Yakuza attack dog
- Dried skinned Yakuza
- Cow head
- Crotchless panties
- Ladle in the ass
- Respected brother becomes a nymphomaniac woman
- Doggie style (literally)
- Secrets INSIDE the vagina
Gokudô kyôfu dai-gekijô: Gozu directly translates to Grand Theater of Perversion and Fear: Cow’s Head - i think that says it all. This is the/his most bizarre (hard to understand) movie. It’s fuckin’ sick = I love it!
“I can only work realistically while wanting to depict something unrealistic.”
- Takashi Miike

The Doll Master (2004) aka Inhyeongsa
5 young people, a quiet doll maker in a wheelchair and her dedicated helper, a chained old man in the basement and a mysterious young girl in red… all together in a lonely doll museum in the woods. What starts out as a fun trip to pose for new dolls soon turns into a nightmare that not everyone will survive.
Freaky Korean dolls! out for vengeance. This reminded me of much older horror doll movies, it had that classic feel. The museum setting added that vintage atmosphere, and the mythical/cursed antiquities are always scary (even when we’re older). The effects/tricks done were mostly old school as well.
This is a horror that taps into our childhood fear/s of dolls turning against us. What if one day your toys went against you?
What i enjoyed the most was the whole fantasy of living dolls and the back story that came with it. There is an explanation, and that was much appreciated. At least they had a mythology.
It felt like a classic throw back film. Simple, not too crazy. The visual presentation was quite good, there’s a lot to look at. The kill scenes and make-up could have used some work. It had great editing timing with the “Boo!” scares and sound effects. Fun and cheap seat-jumping frights.
This reminded me of the classic puppet horror Puppetmaster (1989). Might re-visit that soon.
Not bad. The acting was up to par as well. Might just be your thing.

Sick Nurses (2007) aka Suay Laak Sai
A group of sexy nurses who harvest organs are haunted by the vengeful spirit of one of their dead patients.
The initial poster i saw was misleading. I think this one represents it well.
A teeny bopper Thai horror! After 7 days a curse/revenge is set upon those who are at fault. Your typical haunting. But this time with lesbian nurses!
So it starts of as a crime mystery and then we get “the usual” - creepy black figure/hands, invisible forces (poltergeist) and hair. It seemed very PG. And as if things weren’t a cheesy enough…
…what the fuck?!? the chick showered with clothes on! WHAT IS THIS FUCKERRY?!?!?
One by one they get picked off by a woman covered and dressed in black. In between deaths we get some comedic banter and some drama between the girls. The gore gags escalate a bit with: the jaw scene, cellphone face, death by jar’d fetus, handbag head, confetti blood baths and a birth scene.
Another “cock in the hen house” drama… Women.
I knew i should have been a doctor. - Winning!
Really shallow and simple. A chick flick mixed with relatively common shocks.

Mutant Girls Squad (2010)
Rin, a sixteen-year-old mutant girl who meets a gang of rebel mutants led by a transvestite samurai named Kisaragi, who is bent on restoring the Hiruko clan’s place in the world.
Heads split open and guts all over the floor. What more could you expect from directors: Yoshihiro Nishimura of Tôkyô zankoku keisatsu (2008) aka Tokyo Gore Polic & Vampire Girl vs. Frankenstein Girl (2009) And Noboru Iguchi of The Machine Girl (2008) & RoboGeisha (2009).
Every time i see the name Tak Sakaguchi, i know what i’m gonna get. Crazy action horror, with comedy. He killed in Versus (2000), thrilled at Battlefield Baseball (2003) and spilled more blood in Shinobi (2005). Now he plays a transvestite, excellent. The guy does have a sense of humor.
The babes were pretty good. The effects were better. The story was surprisingly “ok” and not too messed up to follow. The gore was spectacular! And the weaponry was ridiculously entertaining. If you’d follow me long enough you’d know, this is My kind of film.
Check out these films as well:
Oneechanbara: Zombie Bikini Squad (2008)
The Big Tits Dragon (2010) aka Kyonyû doragon: Hot Spring Zombies vs Strippers 5
Violent and funny!!! A genre that can be considered/called an Asian treasure.

Battlefield Baseball (2003) aka Jigoku kôshien
Battlefield Baseball is a tough game—it doesn’t end until all the members on the opposing team are dead. In this game the Gedo High team is composed of blue-faced zombies, and their opponents on the Seido High team know they don’t have a chance at beating them unless they can bring back a star pitcher who has a lethal pitch called the Super Tornado, but who has hung up his cleats and has no desire to return to the game.
A batty and wacky home run!!! Another “Only in Japan” crazy-violent movie, with some laughs. Based on the manga/comic by Gatarô Man.
*If you’ve followed my blog long enough, you know this is the shit i love.
Thanks to riverboatgamblr for suggesting this!
Ridiculous action, exaggerated acting, costumes, fights and weapons. Just like an anime cartoon! The sound-effects were the cherries on top, of this over the top sports comedy.
Yûdai Yamaguchi director of Meatball Machine (2005), enters the word of… fuck if i know what world he’s in. His style amuses me. This one isn’t a splatter-fest, it’s just silly.
Starring Tak Sakaguchi, of the “zombie vs ninja vs yakuza” cult hit Versus (2000).
Jubeh, Why’d you give up the game? *enter dramatic music/red tint*
“No one could catch his pitches, The pitcher who threw too fast, Was hated and left alone by everyone”
He plays catch with his dad, and throws the ball right through him.
It starts off with the text: “This movie is dedicated to all those who love baseball.”
