  1. The Bang Bang Club (2010)

A drama based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers capturing the final days of apartheid in South Africa.

In YO face! well not exactly… but this was a great tale of a few. Brave “conflict” Pioneers. The story behind the story.

Based on the book “The Bang-Bang Club Snapshots from a Hidden War” by João Silva.

Ryan Phillippe back on the leading man seat! Malin Akerman fuck yeah. Great production with greater results. Everyone involved did their job well, evident in the final product.

Since this is a film about badass photographers, one would expect great shots. This film delivered the beauty and shock of a world in turmoil. Gain, loss, wants and needs - human drama in the center of hell.

Drama at it’s finest - it’s based on a real group of photogs who brushed away self preservation to capture inhumane images and destructive behavior of man.

A good film by TV-Docu director Steven Silver. If you missed it, grab a copy now!

  2. Mr. Nice (2010)

The life story of Howard Marks, an elite British drug smuggler.

Finally, a feel good smuggler film! Never have British comedy and pot been so good. Not bad MR. Bernard Rose director of… WHAT?!? Candyman (1992)?!?

We get the typical story of a man who gets into the world of drugs and fast cash, only to see it dissolve before his very eyes.

Kinda like the film Blow (2001)… exchange Johnny Depp with the kooky (crazy) looking Rhys Ifans and some Afghan Hash and you’ve got yourself a dramatic comedy. The guy’s dumbfounded face amuses me. And he’s got that sly look as well. Excellent performance.

Chloë Sevigny was superb as the main babe. She sold me her role and was lookin’ better/prettier i think (less weird looking). Remus Lupin David Thewlis makes a drugged out contribution, stepping away from the popular Potter character. I’m sure they were stoned when they filmed. Probably. Maybe. they did.

“wipe that smile off your cock!”

The humor was all good and well. It broke some of the tense and upsetting drama. But have no fear, this is a bright drug film, of sorts. Tragic, but thankfully… you’ll see when you watch this.

A bizarre and amazing true story, wrapped with secrets and greed. Not an all-out-big-budget blockbuster… a good and steady drug film.

And like all drug films, this leaves viewers with with a lesson “Drugs are bad m’kay”

    Roll up, light up, watch.

  3. Gantz (2011)

After trying to rescue a man on the subway tracks, two teens wake up in a room dominated by a mysterious black sphere that sends them to hunt down and kill aliens hiding on Earth.

Based on the Manga by Hiroya Oku. Which was made into a TV series Gantz (2004) and is now brought to the big screen with this live action adaptation.

Starring one of my new favorite actors Kenichi Matsuyama, better known as “L” of the Death Note Saga. Fans should also check out his performance in Detroit Metal City (2008).

Note: I have not read the manga nor have i followed the tv show.

From what i saw I thought this was a decent film. I was entertained by the story, the action and the unexpected violence. The CGI, costumes and prop work was not that bad. The creatures/aliens were pretty cool (quirky), at some point it reminded me of some video games, even though effects were standard (looking).

Might not be everyone’s cup-o-tea, and i don’t know if it stays true to the original material. I like these manga/anime-ish type of films. And i can’t wait to see them step it up in Gantz: Part II (2011).

    Made in Japan.

  4. Bronson (2008)

A young man who was sentenced to 7 years on prison for robbing a post office ends up spending 30 years in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter ego, Charles Bronson.

This moves embodies the word “BADASS”!

After hearing Tom Hardy was gonna play Bane in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises (2012) i just had to revisit this (tremendous performance) masterpiece by, one of my favorite contemporary directors, Nicolas Winding Refn.

Monumental, bizarre, humorous, violent and stone cold. Based on a true story/life of notorious/enraged inmate Michael Gordon Peterson. This was absolutely brutal and fun, now this is a fight! The theatrical (stage) presentation was admirable and adds a different spectrum to the film. Does this movie sensationalize violence? indeed it does.

The supporting cast of oddballs and lunatics were excellent as well. As a whole this movie has so much to offer, even the funny tunes of the times. The dialogue was great and the narration by the “stage” Bronson was even better. Cinematography was perfect, Refn’s eye has captivated me. All his movies (that i have seen) have made me say out loud “Fuck Yeah!”.

Hardy was iconic and gives his all in what i would say is his “performance of a lifetime”. Much like John Turturro in Fear X (2003) & Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising (2009). Refn knows how to “bring it” out of his leading men.

You want entertainment? you got it! A vivid psychotic masterpiece about fighting the prison system. And I really mean “fight”.

“I am Charlie Bronson I am Britain’s most violent prisoner”

  5. Dear Mr. Gacy (2010)

A chronicle of the interaction between college student Jason Moss and the object of his obsession, serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

A nice little psychological film -based on a true story. “Who’s playing who?” mind games and deception are driving factors to this film. A very simple production, audiences attention will be grabbed by the strange/brave tale of one young man.

Who has the guts to face the demon? Jason Moss does! played by Jesse Moss??? for a while there i thought it was the same guy. But it’s not. Pretty decent job, he and madman William Forsythe were great (considering everything else). I thought the supporting cast was “weak” and typical. Like a Hallmark drama.

I need to do more research on the “facts” about this serial killer tale. Pretty “brave” of Moss to do his thesis on one of the most notorious mind (and body)-fuck criminals. The man is a monster… or is he?

At the end i smiled… when tables are turned it’s hard to say who the real “bad guy” is. Decent film, ain’t anything great. But if you follow/enjoy stories about serial killers, this may satisfy you.

Based on the best-selling book “The Last Victim”

  6. Jack Goes Boating (2010)

A limo driver’s blind date sparks a tale of love, betrayal, friendship, and grace centered around two working-class New York City couples.

Based on a Play by Bob Glaudini.

A slow, sincere and sensitive directorial debut by Philip Seymour Hoffman. A story about friends dealing/helping each other out with their relationships. An above average indie with some pretty good camera work.

Kinda like a buddy and chick flick rolled into one, very simple… it’s about love and relationships. A couple hook their friends up, and in the end… causing a positive and negative result for both couples. The story is really simple and effective in delivering a certain realism, especially to it’s characters. Something everyone can relate to. And in the end it was what it was… simple.

Supporting cast and fellow thespians John Ortiz, Amy Ryan and Daphne Rubin-Vega who did great and kept me glued to the screen.

I’d label it a “down tempo romantic comedy”.

The music was good too, i couldn’t help but smile. It’s all about the good vibes. Then i got a stoner vibe somewhere in there, even the pacing of the movie was stoner-ish. “forget it man! Come on Jack.” - don’t stress yourself out. Chill, have a spliff.

But in the end i felt it fell a little short of spectacular. It was good but didn’t leave me with anything to take in. I thought it was typical. Sort of like a dark comedy, but slower.

Would i watch it again? Yes. Anytime soon? No.

*And on a side note: I can cook.

  7. Conviction (2010)

A working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.

    Based on a true story.

Justice prevails!!! Established TV director Tony Goldwyn gives us a courtroom family drama, starring “Ms. Drama” Hilary Swank. This was heavy and as real as it gets. Her resilience/tenacity reminded me of the film/person/character Erin Brockovich (2000).

What really affected me was the fact that i do have a loved one held in custody, for almost 3 years now. And have personally witnessed the “Fuck-ups” of the justice system. People have a hard time accepting/admitting they were wrong.

Sam Rockwell is the unfortunate brother/father who is wrongfully convicted. Man he spent a lot of time for something he didn’t commit. Talk about “damn!”. Assisting Swank is Minnie Driver, “where have you been?”. And making a craked-out-hick appearance is Juliette Lewis.

Powerful and really reminded me of those “really good” Hallmark court dramas. It’s got the feel of those documentary styled/re-enacted exposes about “true crimes”. This was a crime perpetrated by the courts and justice system. Shame, shame…

Pretty good. A bit long, but hey! aren’t all courtroom dramas?

  8. Manson, My Name Is Evil (2009) aka Leslie, My Name Is Evil

Perry, a sheltered chemical engineer, falls in love with Leslie, a former homecoming princess, when he becomes a jury member at her hippie death cult murder trial.

Kristen Hager stars in this (somewhat) artsy re-telling of the story of how Charles Manson lured and enticed his female cohorts. This story unfolds like a courtroom drama, adding a side story of a juror who’s verdict/opinion contradicts most of his peers.

This was entertaining, but i expected a lot more. Done under a obviously small budget, with minimalistic sets, costumes and effects. And there were so many questions to the authenticity of the acts/craziness portrayed by the characters.

I wouldn’t consider this a fail, I thought it was fun. But i must say, a better Manson film would be Helter Skelter (2004).

  9. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002)

An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.

Director George Clooney brings us a nice and quirky biographical tale. Living a double life… Wonderfully done! A great comedy of twists and turns that veer to the dark, acted by modern cinemas finest. what more could you ask for?

Sam Rockwell is awesome as Chuck Barris, author and star of this story. A story that makes you wonder, even after viewing… captivating from the very beginning.

Be sure to grab a copy. It’s quite good. And watch out for a few cameos.

  10. Dear Zachary: A Letter to a Son About His Father (2008)

A filmmaker decides to memorialize a murdered friend when his friend’s ex-girlfriend announces she is expecting his son.

Wow! a truly moving documentary by Kurt Kuen, friend of the departed Dr. Andrew Bagby. What an emotional roller coaster! The story is about a custody battle between a mother and the grandparents of an unfortunate child. And as if the situation wasn’t bad enough, more twists emerge that rattle nerves with disappointment.

A real look into the hearts of people. Both bad and good attributes of people are seen. The greatest battle was in the courts, what a shitty system. This is an eyeopener, made possible by a tragic event (which could have been prevented).

Powerful and heart felt. Truly a great watch, prepare yourselves. Real life “horrors” are much more frightening than monster/ghost horrors. What a monster.

  11. The Killer Inside Me (2010)

A West Texas deputy sheriff is slowly unmasked as a psychotic killer.

A modern telling of a classic murder story. This was surprising and went beyond what I had expected. There was a crucial scene that grabbed me right away and one thought came to mind “brutal”.

Creepy lookin’ and annoying voiced Casey Affleck stars as the mischievous/malicious deputy. I think he was perfect playing the creepy killer type. Jessica Alba was absolutely georgeous as usual, goddamn! She plays the town whore (I just had to put that out there). Kate Hudson… didn’t look her best in this one… accompanied by an average performance. The film has a pretty good supporting cast and Bill Pullman makes a sleazy appearance as well.

Slow paced and yet captivating ‘til the very end. The end though… may be questionable. But it is a classic tale. Retold by Michael Winterbottom director of 9 Songs (2004) & 24 Hour Party People (2002).

Based on the 1952 novel by noted crime fiction author Jim Thompson.

  12. The Rules of Attraction (2002)

The incredibly spoiled and overprivileged students of Camden College are a backdrop for an unusual love triangle between a drug dealer, a virgin and a bisexual classmate.

James Van Der Beek as a bad-ass ladies man, who happens to jerk-off a lot. Shannyn Sossamon absolute perfection. Jessica Biel as the nymphomaniac babe, sweet! Kate Bosworth was cute as hell. Jay Baruchel who recently starred in The Sorcerer’s Apprentice (2010), was the O.D. guy. Wow! Eric Stoltz, it’s been a while. And the prophet of pornography, Ron Jeremy.

Funny and heartfelt, a lot of internal monologue drives the film and presents many different points of view. Wild and honest, sexually active character stereotypes. This is a romantic comedy with a little bit of humor and good ol’ college drug use. This is the youth of today.

Based on a novel by: Bret Easton Ellis

miniaturesulk replied to your photo: The Rules of Attraction (2002) The incredibly…

I love this movie but I still think that the scene where James Van Der Beek was taking a shit is still too much. Hahaha. Oooh, that split screen part with Shannyn and James meeting up along the hallway was superb. I loved that scene.
