  1. Hostel: Part III (2011)

While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.

    Weak.

NOT directed by Eli Roth… oh boy… straight to video…

Killing in sin city - the grimy foreign “hostel” fear has gone out the window. The story nothing new, the acting was mediocre and the gore was unsatisfying and tame. What the hell happened here?

Another example of “let it go”. The fun, excitement and anxiety is lost in this TURD attempt at shock-torture-horror. What did you expect?

I’d avoid this if i knew what was in store for me… But i DO LIKE Hostel (And Eli Roth). Call me a sucker for violence and gore.

  2. We Need To Talk About Kevin (2011)

The mother of a teenage boy who went on a high-school killing spree tries to deal with her grief - and feelings of responsibility for her child’s actions.

Based on the novel by Lionel Shriver.

“Why would I not understand the context? I am the context.”

How to create a monster. A tremendous family drama, centered on maternal love and self destruction.

An absolutely engaging experience, visually and emotionally.

Tilda Swinton rocked the fuck outta this one! Portraying the frustrated mother who can’t seem to get things right. We see her life slowly sucked away by her antagonist son Kevin. A smart and cunning boy with grand plans.

Blind-as-a-bat husband John C. Reilly flexes his dramatic muscles. Blurring the lines of cause and effect in this suburban tragedy. The voice of reason… or is it?

KEVIN! was well performed and intriguing in all ages. Ezra Miller did a spectacular job as the teen. His eyes and demeanor was frightening and yet a glimmer of light shone through those dark eyes. His younger counterparts Jasper Newell and Rock Duer swung it home. Giving life to the troubled boy.

Jumps between infant, toddler, teen and current times might/may confuse some viewers at first. It will all become clear in the end. Hints and clues lead up to the heartbreaking reality.

The cinematography was be-a-u-ti-fucking-ful! And the script was compelling. The grand finale was one to remember. Depressingly gorgeous and whimsically dramatic.

    Tough love.

  3. 50/50 (2011)

Inspired by a true story, a comedy centered on a 27-year-old guy who learns of his cancer diagnosis, and his subsequent struggle to beat the disease.

Inspirational! You can do it, don’t die… live… live! Liiiiive!

A funny take on life, death and love… nothing can get you through the bad times like a good friend. “I told you so!”

I had mixed emotions that ran from sad to happy. This had it’s fine moments, that would make people think about their own lives.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is our poor old hero facing the ultimate adventure… death. The always cotton mouth, Seth Rogen plays his reliable wingman. And Anna Kendrick is the ray of sunshine. While Bryce Dallas Howard was the bitch. Rogen and JGL made an awesome pair of average joes/goofs. Behind the humor there was truth.

TRIVIA: Joseph Gordon-Levitt actually shaved his head during filming. Gordon-Levitt and Seth Rogen were improvising in character while the cameras kept rolling since the scene was not in the script.

This was definitely one of those 2011 surprises. Romantic in a way but focus was on the battle versus cancer. - a fight close to home. And this film showed the brighter side of… hope.

Entertaining and based on the experience of the writer. It doesn’t get any personal than that. Love’s a bitch, and so is Life.

  4. Pig (2010)

A deranged psychotic spends his summer day deciding how to deal with the three captives he has chained up on his land. With only his own troubled mind and his dim-witted companion available to guide him and the fate of his victims, the disturbed man makes violent choice after violent choice. No one is safe and no taboo is left unbroken.

It’s all Andrew Howard!!! The guys can pull off “crazy” like no other. He was superb in Limitless (2011) - crazy Russian.

Director Adam Mason delivers a non-stop slaughterfest. Praised by many horror sites and critics. I first saw Broken (2006) and was not that impressed, it was ok.

As Advertized! It is what it is… we follow a madman and his little girl “partner” torture a few innocent folk. Utilizing some 1 take shots, i believe the film was a total of 3. What impressed me was the straight out acting, the director should get .5 praise. His cast drove this for him.

Click on the photo and check out the 1st few minutes of the film… it’s like that all the way… senseless violence…

  5. The Tree of Life (2011)

The story centers around a family with three boys in the 1950s. The eldest son witnesses the loss of innocence.

Written and directed by the impressive Terrence Malick.

Absolutely beautiful! Sit back and enjoy the show. As advertised… A visual feast. Whispers and breath of life as we know it. Grand, and very close to home.

Brilliant acting by stern father Brad Pitt, the depressed and hopeful Sean Penn and the gentle Jessica Chastain. The kids were spectacular.

This is what i would call a “relaxing” film. Beautiful and slow, like meditation.

I had the pleasure of watching this with my brother. Who infuriatingly dubbed it as a “Pretentious” film. I laughed out loud and then realized “i could screencap every frame of this flick add some hipster text with some meaningful message about life or love”. By god he’s right!

Without a doubt this is a good movie. BUT for some this may be tiresome and flat out boring. Don’t expect much, watch it on a lazy relaxing Sunday afternoon.

TRIVIA: Jack O’Brien’s initials are J-O-B. In the Bible, Job was a man tested by God after Satan wagers Job only serves God because of His protection. After losing his wealth, family and health, Job would rather curse himself than God. A passage from the Book of Job - “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation… while the morning stars sang together and all the sons of God shouted for joy?” - is used to open The Tree of Life.

Heavy, sluggish and captivating. It’s got so much juice. For the patient and wise.

  6. Final Destination 5 (2011)

Survivors of a suspension-bridge collapse learn there’s no way you can cheat Death.

We all know where this is headed… Death… and then some. Not bad for the debut of director Steven Quale.

A working formula done for the 5th time. Doesn’t it get old? No, not to us “original” death scene voyeurs.

Much like the intricate Saw traps of the mastermind Jigsaw, fans come out to see “how they die”. Trying to outdo the last film…

F-Yeah! Tony Todd. Now let’s skip the rest of the actors and get right to it. The “deaths” were mediocre BUT with the help of 3D it was “ok”. An all too familiar “Hollywood Gore” style, clean and neat. Not like the grotesque indie films which amplify the shock (gore/details) value rather than a cheap “Boo!” scare.

I must say “It’s pretty fuckin’ stupid… it’s final destination FIVE”

Final Destination is not so shocking… you know their gonna die, you just don’t know how (if predictability evades you). Some impressive deaths and some lame ones, y’ get it all here.

That’s it… it’s the same potato. This was definitely better than the last Final Destination, but uses a cheap thrill formula which offers nothing but death. Dry, simple and straight to the point.

  7. World’s Greatest Dad (2009)

A comedy about a man who learns that the things you want most may not be the things that make you happy, and that being lonely is not necessarily the same as being alone.

I expected a wholesome family dramedy, i got a dark black comedy! Superb!

Written and directed by comedian Bobcat Goldthwait, better known as Zed from the Police Academy flicks.

Sensationalizing the awful things in life. We are such pretenders and sheep.

The legendary funnyman is back! Robin Williams is a father and teacher, who dreams of becoming a writer. One day his asshole son, Daryl Sabara, tragically dies of asphyxiation. Williams then covers up his sons disgusting character, becoming “the World’s Greatest Dad”.

The reaction of the students/characters in the film was not unbelievable. Fanatics come in all shapes and sizes, and so do idols. Society is sick, and sometimes we have to play “their game” to survive in the world.

This was a story of a good father.

The “Under Pressure” scene was brilliant!

*Just look at the comments on the poster- they’re pretty darn accurate*

Ahahaha! a cameo by Krist Novoselic of Nirvana.

Ridiculously funny and comes with a bitter sweet message of love, trust and life. Thumbs up!

  8. Banned In America (1998)

Banned In America shows video clips of the darkest elements of human nature, society, and life; the very things that bring fear and disgust into our collective existences. Whether it be live executions, live suicides, or miscellaneous forms of evil, “America” shows us that a sinister world of death lies right outside our door, just waiting for our number to be called…

Gruesome! So freakin’ 90s! A film rooted on the misery, pain and death of others.

WARNING: Not for the weak of heart!

Morbid “caught on film” documentation paired with angry-blast-beat-Euro-techno, and a questionable voiceover (every now and then). Slo-mo shots and just plain brutal.

Similar to the legendary Faces of Death (1980)- which was “fake”.

I would like to stress out that this shockumentary is REAL. A mix and mash of random death footage… oh, and that random dude with elephantiasis balls.

This is SICK. You’re a SICK person if you watch it.

You want to see death? OK.

  9. Hesher (2010)

Hesher is a loner. He hates the world and everyone in it. He has long greasy hair and homemade tattoos. He is malnourished and smokes a lot of cigarettes. He likes fire and blowing things up. He lives in his van, until he meets TJ.

Metallica had me at hello. A downer with great energy.

After the long wait… I finally got to see this! And it did not disappoint… A retro tale of family, friendship, life and death.

The mysterious and nonchalant Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Devin Brochu made a superb duo. An odd brotherhood topped off with dark humor. Rainn Wilson was great as the destroyed man/father/husband. Producer Natalie Portman was gorgeous as the casual and awkward “lady”. And veteran Piper Laurie was the sweetest grandmother ever.

A roller coaster ride which plays with viewers emotions. Sad but true - is the main theme of it all and accepting what life is and seeing the bigger picture. The message of the film is quite strong and could be dissected and discussed for hours. Simple and yet complicated, interpretations may vary.

This is also the 1st full length feature of directorSpencer Susser, who thrilled zombie fans with his short I Love Sarah Jane (2008). I loved how the film threw the “is he? isn’t he?” mind game that make things thrilling.

I just love how the music played into the film. It really added that extra “Uuumph!” to this true to life story of a boy… and his special friend.

    I <3 Grandma

  10. Sa aking pagkakagising mula sa kamulatan (2005) aka My Awakening from Consciousness

Rey, is mauled as he passes by drinking street kids. Pogi hates Rey for the simple reason that he secretly loves Rey’s girlfriend. Jopet finds Rey a convenient substitute for pouring out his hatred for his handler. Kahoy and Taba join in for the sake of camaraderie. Rey regains consciousness and finds his tormentors drunk and asleep. What happens next is anybody’s guess.

The Seven deadly sins personified. One of the best Philippine films, ever. A brutal masterpiece by director Ato Bautista and writer Shugo Praico. They had shocked local audiences, reports of people leaving the cinema horrified, which obviously got me intrigued.

The first time i saw this i was blown away. This is one of those daring films that braved the norm and pushed the envelope of sex and violence in Philippine cinema. A real movie, produced by sweat and perseverance.

In the first minutes of the film we get treated to the vulgar lingo of the (corrupted) street kids. Followed by the brutal beating of Rey. And then we get a look into the different lives of lower class manila youths and the harsh realities that surround their lives.

When people ask me “what was the point?”, i tell them this:

    1. Lust - Angel, was the object of desire who is not such an angel.
    2. Greed - Kahoy, is the snatcher and schemester.
    3. Pride - Pogi, means “handsome” in Tagalog.
    4. Sloth - Taba, the fat guy who does nothing but eat, drink and smoke.
    5. Anger - Jopet, the badass of the group.
    6. Wrath - Rey, the bullied kid who gets revenge.
    7. Gluttony - All the characters and their over-indulgence.

Funny and dramatic actor Ketchup Eusebio (Pogi), is one of those underrated actors who genuinely has the potential to entertain. I loved his opening monologue (tangina). His character had the most impact. And yes i am biased because we work together.

Bodjie Pascua was a treat to see. He was one of those who raised me through television, in our local Sesame St. called Batibot. He will always be Kuya Bodjie.

Carlo Aquino, who played Rey, was amazing and truly deserved the best actor award (2006). He tied the film and wrapped it up pretty well, despite playing a pathetic character.

And let us not forget the infamous one-take (2 POVs) Irreversible (2002) grueling rape scene with Lito Pimentel and Cholo Barretto (who i later found out was/is my cousin). Rape boy.

Digitally shot and indie in all aspects. I watched this with some of the cast members and they gave me a play-by-play of how they accomplished the shots (like a dvd special feature, but LIVE). One of the things that stuck was the scene where the train/LRT (light rail transit) crosses, that short scene took hours to film because they had to wait for the train to cross every 20 mins. And the TV isn’t “on”, it’s just a couple of halogen lamps being shaken by a crew member.

It may not be one of the most technically sound films and i admit there are some holes, but it’s impact of Philippine cinema has echoed ever since it’s release.

They pegged it as a (slum) drama, i call it a horror. Some people pretend to be monsters and some monsters pretend to be people.

Not your average Pinoy drama, controversial and unconventional is what describes it best.

  11. Outpost (2008)

In war-torn Eastern Europe, a world-weary group of mercenaries discover a long-hidden secret in an abandoned WWII bunker.

A man steps into a bar… and hires a mercenary team to find a hidden treasure, protected by zombie Nazi soldiers.

Very much like a combination of GP506 (2008) aka The Guard Post and (a serious) Dead Snow (2009) aka Død sno. Two films i enjoyed, so this movie was a trip to watch. Nothing new about it. It’s a serious UK horror that looks into the Nazi super soldier cult-ish experiments. A clean and well executed silly film with minimal gore.

The undead Nazi troops were ok/typically scary, there were some pop-out-of-nowhere scares. The mercenaries were a nice bunch of guys, it’s too bad we didn’t really get a chance to know them well. A bit shallow and straight to the point… If you’ve watched you fair share of horror movies you’d pretty much know how this is gonna end.

I can’t wait to see Outpost: Black Sun (2011).

    It’s a no-brainer… enjoy!

  12. Hereafter (2010)

A drama centered on three people - a blue-collar American, a French journalist and a London school boy - who are touched by death in different ways.

A story about life and death by legend and director Clint Eastwood

I grabbed this film without knowing what it was about. A tsunami and a ghost whisperer?!? Interesting. The story revolves around a bunch of characters.

Matt Damon (read/said the Team America way), is the talented medium. Who kinda ties the knot between everyone else. Taking a look into the world and words of the dead. A grim story… Cécile De France does her part superbly as the confused/torn woman. And Bryce Dallas Howard was gorgeous! Damn she’s got so many looks, what a cutie in this one. The McLaren twins were also able to give a good (shared) performance.

Not what i had expected. This was pretty darn good. Do you really want me read you?

There are a bit of shocking moments that rattle the drama and add spice to this crazy scenario of 3. The idea of “one who speaks to the dead” may not be new, but the execution was well done. Truly Eastwood.

Near death experience, communicating with the dead, a disaster, a tale of friendship/brotherhood, love, the afterlife and so many other goodies within this film.

  13. Riki-Oh: The Story of Ricky (1991) aka The Story of Ricky

A young man with superhuman strength is incarcerated at a prison run by corrupt officials and seeks to use his martial arts to clean up the system.

Blood, brains and glory!!! The most BRUTAL!!! prison story i’ve seen, as of this year. I feel horrible i didn’t see this sooner… oh well better late than never right?

Riki kills a man and is sent to a corrupt/abusive prison, where normal rules do not apply. He fights off the officers and the cell block leaders. Typical story… ‘til he starts punching the guts out of them!

Amazing! “One punch” is all he needs (seriously). Fuck the story, this is about how Riki kicks ass and rips limbs from his opponents. There is a little drama and explanation of his “powers”. It can’t just be all about gore can it?

In the end, i was clapping my hands (with awe and laughter).

skippertheeyechild: holy shit so many favorite scenes on this one. it’s so awesome.

yomarcus: The guy trying to choke Ricky with his intestines will always be the highlight of this movie for me tbh.

Gore fans MUST see this! It’s so funny it’s good.

    http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0102293/

  14. Unknown (2011)

A man awakens from a coma, only to discover that someone has taken on his identity and that no one, (not even his wife), believes him. With the help of a young woman, he sets out to prove who he is.

The Bourne Oldtimatum! A “who am i?” thriller shadowed by lies and betrayal directed by Jaume Collet-Serra. Who truly stunned and impressed horror/thriller fans with Orphan (2009). This time around he takes on a crime/mystery/thriller.

The story keeps you guessing to the very end… middle (to folks familiar with this story). Because it can only be one or the other, either he’s a good guy or a bad guy. A man can only be judged by his actions.

The characters were great! I wanna have a Russian accent. Our hero Liam Neeson, did great as usual/expected. The women in his lives Diane Kruger and January Jones did an equally good job, along with the supporting cast of sinister characters.

Not as flashy and action packed as like the other films of the genre. But this was good.
