Chronicle (2012)
Three high school students make an incredible discovery, leading to their developing uncanny powers beyond their understanding. As they learn to control their abilities and use them to their advantage, their lives start to spin out of control, and their darker sides begin to take over.
Origins: Good and Evil collide!!! Sparked by angst, abuse and power!
I honestly thought it was gonna be a big budget Hollywood B.S. flick…
What a thrilling surprise it was to catch this little film, about great power and responsibility. I mocked the idea at first… the final product got my respect.
The new boys! “still waters run deep” Andrew (Dane DeHaan), “Best dude” Matt (Alex Russell) and “Mr. President” Steve (Michael B. Jordan) fly high and touch the sky. An impressive starring debut for the 3 gentlemen. I had my initial doubts and worries, In the end they did the job well.
Written & Directed by relative unknowns, this superpower film kicked ass! in more ways than one. BUT… you know you’ve seen this before… Tweaked a bit and reoriented for the American market… Akira (1988) - TELL ME I’M NOT RIGHT? I DARE YOU.
Sci-fi, action, adventure, fantasy and drama!!! What a mouthful.
Bullied boys and Cool kids, let evil and good brood. The roots of madness and kindness are captured by the buddy trio and their fantastic journey within themselves. We all want powers! Jealousy got the best of me… damn.
The “captured footage” angle has been drawn out and so has the “superpower” genre. How did this film kickass? Good writing and directing. The visual effects were neat and the action (in the end) was epic! Akira!
Not a shaky as some would think. Clean edits between different video recorders and security cams remind people that this is a “fun film”.
They’re sold me my own dream - it’s been a while since i’ve felt this way about a film. Especially one that i initially dissed/mocked (without proof). I am now a believer, no longer a doubter.
Sometime y’gotta give a film a chance, it may surprise you - with its inner strength.

Unbreakable (2000)
A suspense thriller with supernatural overtones that revolves around a man who learns something extraordinary about himself after a devastating accident.
I revisited my FAVORITE M. Night Shyamalan movie!!! Yes, it appealed to me the most.
If there is no villain then what is the meaning of hero?
Security Guard aka “caped crusader” Bruce Willis and “born bad” Samuel L. Jackson go head to head, in this discovery of meaning and purpose.
Two characters with their own quirks: Willis aka David Dunn, has that (Marvel) superhero name like Peter Parker, Bruce Banner, Matt MurdocK etc. first and last name start with the same letter. And his color is “Green”, seen in his surroundings and wardrobe.
Glass Man, Elijah was one to remember. His color scheme was obviously violet/purple, villainous. His “glass” like form gave life to the film. Pity comes first and then the horns come out and reveal his true intentions.
TRIVIA: Several scenes relating to the “Mr. Glass” character involve glass:
- as a newborn, he’s primarily seen reflected in mirrors
- as a young child, he’s seen reflected in a blank TV screen
- he leaves his calling card on the windshield of David Dunn’s car
- he’s reflected in a glass frame in his art gallery
- his walking stick is made of glass
- comic books seen behind him in one scene are of Thor, who for a time in the 1980s, had a curse upon him where his bones were brittle and would break easily.
One thing i really enjoyed the most was the attempt in shooting this just like a comic book. The framing was spot on in some essential scenes. The suspense built up well and the “reveal” was just right. This isn’t the usual special effects riddles hero flick. This is a smart one, that peeps into the “reason”.
We all have our kryptonite.
Tragedies turn some into heroes… we embrace things… it is OUR choice… isn’t that choice interesting?

Griff the Invisible (2010)
Griff, office worker by day, superhero by night, has his world turned upside down when he meets Melody, a beautiful young scientist who shares his passion for the impossible.
A “real” Aussie Superhero! Good on ya mate, this was ok!
The story was a mix of Kick-Ass (2010) + Wanted (2008), Executed like Super (2010) & Defendor (2009), with a tiny dash of Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog (2008) and twist of Paper Man (2009). A decent low budget hero flick by writer/director Leon Ford.
This was a refreshing escape from the guns and glamor of Hollywood hero flicks. Closer to earth, so to speak. The psychology of “superheroes” intrigues me…
Neatly packaged. Acting wasn’t too shabby, the romance bits weren’t vomit inducing and the effects were… well… they got the point across.
If you’re the type that likes these kinds of “raw” hero films, you might wanna check outSuperheroes (2011) and the Mockumentary Comic Book: The Movie (2004).
Not the best, but definitely not the worst.

Thor: Tales of Asgard (2011)
The young Norse god Thor embarks on a quest with his brother Loki to find and recover a legendary sword.
Marvel gives us a Thor toon?
What??? Oh… it’s for kids… I had high hopes. A young Thor disobeys his father and causes war with the Frostgiants… this time the story is different. It’s a simple and typical cartoon, TV worthy i suppose. The animation was nothing new or “cool” and the story wasn’t like the motion picture Thor (2011).
I tried… but really didn’t enjoy this. It’s a little too kiddie and boring. Yeah some action and some info, but in the end it was “blah…”
Something best caught channel surfing, not a smart investment.

Thor (2011)
The powerful but arrogant warrior Thor is cast out of the fantastic realm of Asgard and sent to live amongst humans on Earth, where he soon becomes one of their finest defenders.
Bravo Kenneth Branagh! Your Frankenstein (1994) rocked and your historical/classical pieces were quite good. I was definitely surprised with the humor and all-out-fun of this comic book come to life.
Win-Win cast! Chris Hemsworth in a career defining role, he IS the god of thunder! He truly embodied the arrogant hero and managed to soften the rough godly exterior. Daddy-yo Anthony Hopkins WOAH! need i fuckin’ say more?!? Legendary. And adding some Hollywood “umph!” is (almost perfect) Natalie Portman. I mean c’ mon, what a cast.
Supporting characters were a surprise as well. A lot of “new” faces, scattered around. Among them were the funny Kat Dennings, badass Ray Stevenson and Rene Russo (she’s back??? yeah i was surprised too). Idris Elba (Heimdall), the gatekeeper/watcher, was awesome!!! (in a Samuel Jackson god type way). But what i really appreciated was the cross-over Doctor/scientist character played by Stellan Skarsgård, who hinted about knowledge of S.H.I.E.L.D. and gamma radiation (Bruce Banner aka The Hulk). You can feel them “Assemble”.
FUN. In every sense of the word. Some minor parts of the story were rushed/done quickly, it was ok. The fight and glory is what this is all about. A hero is humbled and rises from the ashes.
I admit i wasn’t too much of a fan of the comic book… i considered Thor to be a good side/incidental/cross-over character. Grunt heroes never really appealed to me, much like the Hulk. Those damn brutes, who just clobber bad guys. I admire Wit over Strength. This movie has refreshed my interest and has inspired me to re-visit some of my comic books.
There were a few noticeable changes/adjustments to the story, but i think it’ll work out when everyone/thing comes together.
A REAL action fantasy adventure! I am truly excited for The Avengers (2012)!!!
*Thanks to knivesmonroethefilmmaker for reminding me about Jeremy Renner aka Hawkeye, who does a cameo.

Season of the Witch (2011)
14th-century knights transport a suspected witch to a monastery, where monks deduce her powers could be the source of the Black Plague.
An adventure of… not so epic proportions. I read a lot of negative responses and wanted to judge this myself. They were right.
The “freaking out” Nicolas Cage and the “big faced” Ron Perlman hold the duty/task of transporting a beautiful young lady (Claire Foy) accused of witchcraft. Their destination is clouded by politics and religion, throughout the journey they talk talk talk… adding some “ei!” moments was the inclusion of Misfits (2009) pretty boy Robert Sheehan, who was “ok”.
The only good thing is the cast, I would’ve called this film a definite “FAIL” but it’s got Nicolas Cage and Ron Perlman… “respect”. A film neither should be proud of.
Plain old typical, boring and anticlimactic. What the hell was up with the dialogue? Something definitely was weird about this film… I didn’t like it. And the story IS my type. What went wrong?
A film that could not be saved: The film’s original domestic release date was March 19, 2010. Several weeks before this date, executives at Lionsgate postponed the release indefinitely, reportedly due to poor audience reception at preview screenings. Director of Swordfish (2001) & Gone in Sixty Seconds (2000) Dominic Sena was subsequently fired, and Brett Ratner of X-Men: The Last Stand (2006), Red Dragon (2002) and Rush Hour 1-3 (1998-2007) directed extensive reshoots in September 2010.
Fuckin’ horrible and typical book incantations mumbo jumbo, nothing new. Even the fight scenes sucked balls, the twist in the end was weak and expected. I’m guessing the 2 directors thing fucked shit up. What a monstrosity…
*If you wanna watch a great film about religion, the plague, a quest and wicked women. I highly recommend you see Black Death (2010). One of those good films that went unnoticed.

The Green Hornet (2011)
Following the death of his father, Britt Reid, heir to his father’s large company, teams up with his late dad’s assistant Kato to become a masked crime fighting team.
The Green Bee!!! is just one of the many jokes in store for viewers. A reincarnation of the original radio show, The Green Hornet (1936). The Green Hornet (1940) being the 1st followed by it’s successful/cult tv show The Green Hornet (1966), And now we have this modern version written and starring Seth Rogen and directed by the stylish Michel Gondry.
A vigilante action comedy. Not bad if you’re got low expectations, it can be quite fun. Explosions, gadgets, car chases, slow-mo fight scenes, cheesy jokes and some slap stick humor. A “traditional” hero, in line with films like Dick Tracy (1990) and The Spirit (2008).
A few decent performances by badasses Edward James Olmos and Christopher Waltz. Add a few cameos like James Franco sportin’ a douche ‘stache and “he’s alive!” Edward Furlong. And the only woman… “in her Twilight” or “Cocoon” Cameron Diaz - laughed out loud (watch it you’ll get what i’m sayin’).
KATO! stole the show, a nice step for newcomer Jay Chou. He had HUGE shoes to fill, there can only be one Bruce Lee! And since there can only be one, i really appreciated the fact they tried to innovate and attempt a new “vision” to the fight scenes. Slow-mo and having some sort of cognitive targeting instinct. It looked pretty cool.
Another star of this movie was The Black Beauty! I want one!
They didn’t “improve” the icon (made it “modern”), they did it in a homage way i suppose. I felt like they kept true to the show, but failed terribly at reviving a legend. The Green Hornet was an ASSHOLE. It’s a plain action flick with some comedy. I wasn’t a fan of the show, i’m on the ropes with this updated version. The story was shit, as expected from 3D (sacrifice substance for style) films.
Fun for kids and adults! Not the “serious” super/hero movie but entertaining enough to keep you watching. 3D? there were the fight scenes, but that’s it. I say go 2D.
I’m sure my dad will like this.

The Phantom (2009)
A two-part TV mini-series about the recruitment, training, and unleashing of the 22nd Phantom, Chris Moore. A law student and parkour runner who learns that he was adopted. After his parents are murdered, he must don the famous Skull Ring and train in the jungles of Bengalla so that he can take on the evil Singh Brotherhood.
Just finished this while waitin’ on the boss. It’s another one of “those” types, taking a comic turned film and … Raping it. Just like Smallville (2001) and the failed Aquaman (2007).
This show was suppose to be a modern interpretation as what was done in The Phantom (1996), which was miserably done… But it had Billy Zane!
Ryan Carnes stars as the masked crusader, who oddly skipped the traditional garb which made the character famous in exchange for “cool” looking protective gear. Which I thought was weak and ridiculous. Isabella Rossellini is in this as well, but age has caught up with the woman. How could a once well respected actress stoop to this show’s level… sad.
This was just poorly done and tried to be an action show… thankfully it’s a 2 part mini-series. I was excited to hear a new Phantom was being done, but to see it was a mistake. This belongs in the after lunchtime broadcast of cable networks…

Superman/Batman: Public Enemies (2009)
When Lex Luthor gets elected US President, he uses the threat of an oncoming kryptonite meteor striking Earth as a rationale to frame Superman.
It is what it is. Imagine a world where Lex Luthor is President! and boy does he love superman. A lot of superheroes in this one. Batman was bad-ass. Pretty ridiculous at times but fluid animation and action saved it from becoming another deleted file. Kids will love it! Batman and Superman are comic book icons, kneel down and pay your respects.

Tank Girl (1995)
Based on the British cult comic-strip, our tank-riding anti-heroine fights a mega-corporation, which controls the world’s water supply.

I freakin’ LOVE this movie. The comic book was ridiculously funny and the movie was a great interpretation. Ice-T rocks as a bad-ass kangaroo!
***The photo above really reminded me of this! it’s probably the head-gear.

Dorian Gray: Comparison

The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
In an alternate Victorian Age world, a group of famous contemporary fantasy, SF and adventure characters team up on a secret mission.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0311429/
Dorian Gray (2009)
A corrupt young man somehow keeps his youthful beauty eternally, but a special painting gradually reveals his inner ugliness to all.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1235124/
Both Films featured a character known as DORIAN GRAY, an immortal bound to a painting. Both films did not do to well in my opinion, but the LXG Dorian Gray was the superior one of the two.

Supergirl(1984)
After losing a powerful orb, Kara, Superman’s cousin, comes to Earth to retrieve it and instead finds herself up against a wicked witch.

Oh my, what a weak film. But being the comic book enthusiast that i am, i must say “Watch it” you just have to because it’s Supergirl.
This was a little hard to re-watch. Damn, this was silly/girly. I was inspired by Megan…
Download “The Erotic Adventures of Supergirl” AUDIOBOOK very funny (not for kids)
