Daisies (1966) aka Sedmikrásky
The life of two girls, Marie I and Marie II, who try to understand the meaning of the world and of their life.
“Ring-a-round a rosie, A pocket full of posies, Ashes! Ashes! We all fall down”
Ladies RULE! A empowering Czechoslovakian film written and directed by Vera Chytilová. Blazed by an era of political injustice and inequality.
Two lovely girls decide to take the world as their oyster (taking advantage of men and acting like spoiled children) which slowly eats away at their sanity leading to a path of destruction. If the world is bad, then we should be bad. Wait… are we bad or good?
Satirical and ingenious film making, visually pop art-ish.Self-destruction has never been this beautiful. The editing and different types of artsy (color/tint) visuals will keep your eyes busy.
Was it controversial? Well… It was banned by the government… That only means one thing… this film gave them the finger!
Robotic slapstick humor. Watch out world, the girls have an appetite for destruction! To hell with the rules!
Be still my beating heart! Jitka Cerhová is the daisy-crowned sister with eyes that could melt a glacier. Be careful of what lies beneath. And then the pigtail sister Ivana Karbanová steps in the limelight… damn these brunettes. The ladies used my eyes as string to their tug-of-war battle for attention.
Cutting sausages and bananas!
The ladies indulge and digress, cut each other up leading towards the climactic food fight in the end… they attempt to pick up the pieces, but alas… what has been done is done.
Set in a place and time ruled by machinery and work. War and destruction is everywhere and we are merely audience members.
Gorgeous visuals and quirky lines drive this film into hell and back. Sweet little girls trapped, wondering, experimenting, playing with fire.
As someone quoted “This is a film that everyone needs to Czech out.”

The Lost Bladesman (2011) aka Guan yun chang
The story of legendary Guan Yu crossing five passes & slaying six generals. He played a major role in the civil war that led to the collapse of Han Dynasty & the establishment of Shu Han of the 3 Kingdoms, making Liu Bei its first emperor.
Kickin’ ass traditional style. A battle for country and love, fortified with practical stunt sword/spear fighting.
Donnie Yen handles the spear of righteousness and honor, spectacularly. Not since Ip Man (2008) have i seen this type of “classic” fighting style, revisited. Back to the roots.
The whole cast was brilliant in this historical epic drama based on a classic novel. The sets, props and effects were clean and grand. What really carried this was the stupendous fight choreography.
The weakness may be… the drama. One man against an entire army… stabbed in the heart with cupids arrow. The guy was unstoppable, pretty badass/insane stuff here.
A chivalrous tale that will entertain and fill a steady afternoon. Could have been executed better, this was ok. “Love… oh love…”

I Know What I Saw (2009)
Director, James Fox assembled the most credible UFO witnesses from around the world to testify at The National Press Club in Washington D.C.: Air Force Generals, astronauts, military and commercial pilots, government and FAA officials from seven countries tell stories that, as Governor Fife Symington from Arizona stated, “will challenge your reality”.
Just what the scientists ordered! Honest to goodness (reliable/credible) accounts of U.F.O. sightings. There is a mystery not being investigated, why?
How long can governments of the world beat around the bush? “I believe in aliens!”
This film still leaves you with questions in the end. But manages to crack the door of possibility slightly ajar. It would be arrogant for man to think the entire universe was made for him. Think about it 99.99999% is uninhabitable for humans. Kindly leave your self righteous religion out the door, we are talking facts.
Are we the descendant of aliens? the possibility is not far fetched. History and the timeline of progress/evolution has hints of “influence” by superior beings. And yes, aliens may have been mistaken for angels… For now, we watch the skies.

The Eagle (2011)
In Roman-ruled Britain, a young Roman soldier endeavors to honor his father’s memory by finding his lost legion’s golden emblem.
Based on the novel The Eagle of the Ninth by Rosemary Sutcliff.
I expected a lot… Good movie, but kinda slow and tiresome… and nothing that gives it that “umph!”. I should have expected this from Kevin Macdonald director of The Last King of Scotland (2006), he has a much more dramatic approach rather than action. He does show us some shocking stuff, but nothing new to the battlefield.
I thought that casting decisions may have hindered my enjoyment of this film. Channing Tatum didn’t grab my attention. His screen presence needs some work. Jamie Bell was interesting to watch… and Donald Sutherland shares some (minimal) screen time as well.
I get it, you must return/save the eagle… I’ve seen better. And i can’t speak about the historic accuracy of this. Interesting enough… It was ok, it isn’t badass. Damn expectations…

102 Minutes That Changed America (2008)
The morning of September 11, 2001 is shown through multiple video cameras in and around New York City, from the moment the first WTC tower is hit until after both towers collapse.
Mom says to turn on the T.V. and then… “It’s like a fucking movie!” is what i initially said, when the 2nd plane hit. This documentary brought me back.
There are no conspiracies and no twists, An honest and genuine experience without any biases. It’s as raw as history gets. A catastrophic moment in time, captured by a few individuals. Edited neatly and presented in a very professional way.
Intense and brutal.

The King’s Speech (2010)
The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it.
A historical drama about battling a not-so-funny impediment. Based on a true story… Who says movies don’t teach you anything? It may not be exactly how it went, it’s still an interesting story.
Colin Firth makes a tremendous return to the limelight as the stuttering king. His chemistry with the brilliant Geoffrey Rush was enjoyable to watch. Their conversation grabs you. Helena Bonham Carter was definitely a “Queen” Elizabeth. Such a strong woman. And big brother Guy Pearce wraps up this exceptional cast.
Great technical work and a interesting look at misfortune and redemption. Grand and wholesome. A story we can all learn from. Perseverance pays off. In the wise words of Rob Schneider “You can do it!”
Royalty seen with a sympathetic eye. This movie had “heart”.

Bathory (2008)
Based on the legends surrounding the life and deeds of Countess Elizabeth Bathory known as the greatest murderess in the history of mankind. Contrary to popular belief, Elizabeth Bathory was a modern Renaissance woman who ultimately fell victim to mens aspirations for power and wealth.
What an epic tale! “Based” doesn’t mean historically correct, as far as this film is concerned. The story and flow of the film reminded me of a dark fairytale.
The first hour of the film has some twisted stuff and was rather entertaining, but was confusing due to the editing. And i think her dreams/visions of the countess were influenced by substance abuse of sorts (green visions = absinth). I understand why some people gave up watching this. The second half offers a steadier pace and clearly explains the situation better.
This two hour horror-fantasy-drama has got so much to offer. It had that historical feel, bloody murders, battle sequences, conspiracies, mysteries, a love story, twists and cons. And comic relief monks with gadgets. Yup it goes that far.
A good description would be “A dark fairytale based on the legend of Elizabeth Bathory”.
The movie feels like something like Hallmark would produce and the story’s quality would be of something that belongs in Cinemax.
I really enjoyed the “is she? isn’t she?” thing going on. It kept me on my toes, because prior to watching i did not know anything about Bathory except for her blood baths. So I wasn’t in any position to judge the viability of events portrayed.
Relatively unknown actress, Anna Friel plays the Hungarian countess believed to be evil incarnate. She did such a good job, i was captivated by her madness and beauty on screen.
*And because I was so impressed with her performance, i wanted to see how she’d fair when compared to the actresses from: Bathory (2000) & The Countess (2009). So expect the reviews of those films soon.
Juraj Jakubisko had an unconventional way of presenting this tale of horror and mystery. Pretty good stuff going on here. All together I really think they tried to do too much, just a smidge. Cinematography-wise, costumes and sets I had no complaints. The editing and storytelling was a bit shady.
Thanks to maria-agnostika for suggesting this epic tale.
