  1. The Violent Kind (2010)

Bikers tangle with the spirits of the dead in this genre mashup from the writing and directing team the Butcher Brothers. Cody’s mother will be celebrating her birthday soon. The party turns out to be a major biker bash, with riders from far and wide represented, but when things start winding down, the evening takes a serious turn for the worse. A guest turns up dead, Cody’s former girlfriend undergoes a terrible transformation and there’s no way to call for help. As Cody and Q try to make sense of it all, the party is visited by the spirits of a deceased biker club from the 1950s, who are restless and looking to settle some scores.

ALRIGHT… did you just read that? jesus.

Bikers and horror, the combination seemed cool. But the product was… lame and weak. Babes, boobs and brutal dudes. The crew was weakly built and the characters were dry.

The effects? HAHAHA! the gore “ok” the hits “fake” and the visual effects “cheesy”.

The only nice thing about this film was the ’50s club members! Rockabilly babes kissing? WIN. The bad guys had charisma but didn’t sell it well. Could have saved the film… WHAT THE FUCK ARE THEY???

Questions unanswered and an hour plus taken from my life…

  2. Underworld Awakening (2012)

The vampire warrioress Selene escapes imprisonment to find herself in a world where humans have discovered the existence of both Vampire and Lycan clans, and are conducting an all-out war to eradicate both immortal species.

Kate Beckinsale does it a 3rd time! That Body DAMN.

The vamp-wolf franchise has reached the stratosphere!!! Like most films that stretch their time, diluted by sequel after sequel and the “Lycan ” prequel.

It was like a sic-fi horror video game. The story simply does not compute… Visually it was as brilliant as it’s predecessors. Action and production was great. There was a “fun factor” despite the dryness of written content.

A child is now in the mix - yeah, that was original. It was ok for what it was… we all know what to expect… Hollywood.

  3. The Devil Inside (2012)

In Italy, a woman becomes involved in a series of unauthorized exorcisms during her mission to discover what happened to her mother, who allegedly murdered three people during her own exorcism.

I had HUGE expectations… not as frightening as i’d hope…

Another one of those fake/faux documentaries to add to the list… A supernatural horror where a “REAL” The Exorcist (1973) is captured on film.

The discussions about possession/exorcisms/rites was interesting. The dialogue could have used more work though. The pace of the investigation was a bit tiresome.

“Performing exorcisms without the church’s permission” - You know you’re fucked.

    Medication, psychology and religion.

Acting wise, they all did well and Fernanda Andrade was convincing enough. The nun! oh boy… The frights and freak-outs were respectable. The content of the film was intriguing enough to keep viewers interested.

WARNING: Prepare yourselves for shaky camera work. And Shrieking.

It’s a 50/50 film. Love it, hate it - it’s in the genre. You know it’s fake. Sit back and appreciate the effort in selling a “fake/real” film.

And in the end, we’ve seen it all before.

The BEST exorcism flick i’ve seen as of late has got to be The Rite (2011).

  4. The Innkeepers (2011)

During the final days at the Yankee Pedlar Inn, two employees determined to reveal the hotel’s haunted past begin to experience disturbing events as old guests check in for a stay.

I was EXCITED to see the new film by Ti West, i was pleasantly amused with The House of the Devil (2009) and thought this new flick was gonna trump the last. This anxious fan was dead wrong…

Sara Paxton stars in this horror tale of spooks and kooks. She was “ok” in a weird way. A ghost in the inn, again. Goofy at times… I didn’t know if this was a comedy or not.

I GOT BORED. Seriously. It was paced terribly. Where they trying the suspense thriller angle? it didn’t work. It was like an old film i’ve seen too many times. Unsatisfying.

They story was lame and the actors… questionable. Some good shots every now and then, accompanied by cheap thrills.

    “Meh” this wasn’t for me…

  5. The Hunters (2011)

A group of friends spend a weekend in the woods and find themselves trapped with no way out. They will soon become prey to the hunters.

Another average horror with hooligans and guns. I’d call this a thriller, with a semi-hot babe. The characters were typical and the gore/violence was “meh”. B. There’s not much to say but… Run, run for your lives!

I got bored halfway through and suffered ‘til the end. It was “ok” but not something i’d endorse.

Seen it all too many times… Amateurs.

  6. Dream House (2011)

Soon after moving into their seemingly idyllic new home, a family learns of a brutal crime committed against former residents of the dwelling.

From horror to psychological crime thriller… Haven’t seen one of these in a while…

BAM! Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz and Naomi Watts - No complaints here. Each brings somethin’ to the table. Brought to us by dramatic director Jim Sheridan.

It started off good, bright and clean… Dad starts to investigate, and then the darkness begins. Slowly deteriorating while he discovers the harsh truth about what really happened. So far so good…

Then the doctors come in “AH! that explains it.”- it’s like a lot of other psych-crime mysteries. Some dramatic banter between character lead to a questionable finale, that seemed rushed and unorganized. A parachute perhaps?

TRIVIA: Director Jim Sheridan fought with Morgan Creek’s head Jim Robinson continuously on the set over the shape of the script and the production of the movie. After Sheridan re-shot some scenes because they did not go down well with test audiences, Morgan Creek took away the film from Sheridan’s hands to re-cut it themselves. As a result, they created the trailer which many felt gave away too many of the movie’s secrets. As a result, Sheridan, Daniel Craig and Rachel Weisz refused to promote the film to the press.

And there you go… Cast, script and director WASTED by meddling producers.

It’s sad seeing a film (with potential) stumble and trip down a spiral staircase, on it’s way to the end…

  7. Little Murder (2011) aka Szellemtanu

In post-Katrina New Orleans, a disgraced detective encounters the ghost of a murdered woman who wants to help him identify her killer.

“He talks to the dead…” Josh Lucas is the troubled drunk who looses grip with reality.

Weirdos rule! Terrence Howard took the spotlight from Josh Lucas. Hey! it’s always nice to see Cary Elwes pop up every now and again.

New Orleans has a smoothing atmosphere. BUT this was shot like a Hallmark thriller… Tacky and cheap in a way. Good cast, questionable production.

The story was quite predictable and the dialogue/delivery drove it (somewhat) to an acceptable direction. I liked it but didn’t. This could have been great - due to the ghastly effects and CHEAP impression, this sank to a level i did not expect.

I tried to give it an “OK” because of Howards Shakespearean quirks. It was not enough to save this dribble… FAIL.

“Y’know that house is haunted.” - A forgettable film.

  8. Rare Exports: A Christmas Tale (2010)

In the depths of the Korvatunturi mountains, 486 meters deep, lies the closest ever guarded secret of Christmas. The time has come to dig it up! This Christmas everyone will believe in Santa Claus.

Revisiting this Finnish Christmas fantasy horror was definitely a treat!I think i’ll be viewing/sharing this one every year from now on.

    HERE IS MY ORIGINAL REVIEW

    It’s FUN!

  9. Hostel: Part III (2011)

While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.

    Weak.

NOT directed by Eli Roth… oh boy… straight to video…

Killing in sin city - the grimy foreign “hostel” fear has gone out the window. The story nothing new, the acting was mediocre and the gore was unsatisfying and tame. What the hell happened here?

Another example of “let it go”. The fun, excitement and anxiety is lost in this TURD attempt at shock-torture-horror. What did you expect?

I’d avoid this if i knew what was in store for me… But i DO LIKE Hostel (And Eli Roth). Call me a sucker for violence and gore.

  10. The Skin I Live In (2011) aka La piel que habito

A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.

Talk to Her (2002) and Volver (2006) Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar is back with a twisted dark medical romance. Me gusta!

Suave swagger is back! Antonio Banderas is the Frankenstein/Marquis De Sade-ish medical practitioner who keeps a deep dark secret. He was absolutely brilliant in this one.

The exquisite, stunning and talented Elena Anaya has captivated me once again. Gorgeous is an understatement. I was enamored by those beautiful eyes. Her interactions with the maid, doctor and The Cat were captivating and sinister.

I can proudly say “This is one of my favorites of 2011”. Twisted, sick and interesting. A different kind of torture horror, with a dash of mystery and suspense. Mashing up genres and delivering astonishingly sexy visuals.

Definitely a “must see”. Revenge most vile.

  11. Straw Dogs (2011)

L.A. screenwriter David Sumner relocates with his wife to her hometown in the deep South. There, while tensions build between them, a brewing conflict with locals becomes a threat to them both.

Based on the novel by Gordon Williams “The Siege of Trencher’s Farm”.

Are-make of the violent and controversial Straw Dogs (1971), the Dustin Hoffman country home invasion classic!

This re-make stays true to the original film, with some minor changes… wait did i say minor? Setting and details were adjusted to modern times, the situation still has it’s weight in thrills.

BUT - the violence and artsy “in your face” shocks have been put aside, and replaced by pretty faces.

James Marsden and (the oh-so-bangable) Kate Bosworth are the couple trapped in paradise. Hunting season has begun! The ruthless and conniving Alexander Skarsgård and legendary James Woods prowl the land with their wolf in sheep’s clothing demeanor.

Sadly this turned out to be a mediocre thriller… Pretty cast doesn’t really last… I expected things to burst out of the screen towards the end… nothing… a safe horror thriller trumped by many (B grade) “It could happen in real life” horrors.

Ok for a viewing, don’t think i’m gonna revisit this thing anytime soon…

  12. Chillerama (2011)

It’s the closing night at the last drive-in theater in America and Cecil B. Kaufman has planned the ultimate marathon of lost film prints to unleash upon his faithful cinephile patrons. Four films so rare that they have never been exhibited publicly on American soil until this very night! With titles like Wadzilla, I Was A Teenage Werebear, The Diary of Anne Frankenstein, and Zom-B-Movie, Chillerama not only celebrates the golden age of drive-in B horror shlock but also spans over four decades of cinema with something for every bad taste.

4 tales 1 movie, B to the bone! Horror like it was meant to be… funny. Sloppy and yet amusing enough for die hard horror fans.

Wadzilla - Directed and starring Adam Rifkin. Monster sperm comes to town. A sick comedic twist on manly ammunition. I couldn’t stop laughing! It reminded me of Bad Biology (2008).

I Was a Teenage Werebear - Hmmm… this was a bit weird. “wereBEAR” you know where i’m gettin’ at right? Not traditional… Most B-horrors of yesteryear’s were not as liberal. We’re used to big guns, babes with boobs and blood. The musical aspect of it was somewhat tiring and annoying.

The Diary of Anne Frankenstien - A throwback to the black and white film era. Directed by Adam Green, of Frozen (2010) and the modern cult-ish slasher horror Hatchet (2006).

Zom-B-Movie - Wraps everything up in a blueish goo popcorn finale! The drive-in is plagued by the living dead and our heroes battle to survive, the comedy and horror. Just like the 80s!

Wadzilla & The Diary of Anne Frankenstein were the best ones!

Overall it was a pleasant experience, i wanted more. Everything seemed “rushed” i enjoyed 50% of the content. Some of it was just lame and unnecessary. A good attempt in giving props to the films of the past, but they could do better.

Funny? Some. Good? Some. Bad? Some.

  13. Panic Button (2011)

Four young people win a competition of a lifetime; Jo, Max, Gwen and Dave head off on an all expenses paid trip to New York, courtesy of social network All2gethr.com. As they board the private jet, they are asked to relinquish their mobile phones and take part in the in-flight entertainment – a new online gaming experience.

Be careful! The internet hides many secrets…

A nice little UK horror that makes us weary of our online presence. You never know who’s watching.

The frights and scares weren’t brutal or in your face. The terror comes when we face the truth. The gore was “meh…” and the shocks were predictable. One weakness was the animation on the monitor.

A so-so thriller. Decent for an indie. Saw-ish in nature… Revenge! The ending was a stretch… but forgivable. Good effort by the production and cast.

Note: The poster/dvd cover comments are not as accurate as they sound.

“Always Read The Terms & Conditions, before signing” - a tough lesson we all must learn/know.

    Be responsible.

  14. Creep (2004)

Trapped in a London subway station, a woman who’s being pursued by a potential attacker heads into the unknown labyrinth of tunnels beneath the city’s streets.

I finally got to see the debut of director Christopher Smith! Loved Triangle (2009) and Black Death (2010). Watching this little horror brought me back to the roots.

“Run Lola, Run!” Franka Potente did a superb job as the hapless victim.

A run and stab horror. Simple and yet delivered quite well. The killer had his quirks, the monstrous appearance was a nice touch. The gore was “ok”… The end may have been a bit outrageous and out of sync with majority of the film. There was never a dull moment.

Admittedly, this is all too convenient. It’ hard to believe the entire situation… it’s a horror with hardly any back story. Straight to the point.
