The Skin I Live In (2011) aka La piel que habito
A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.
Talk to Her (2002) and Volver (2006) Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar is back with a twisted dark medical romance. Me gusta!
Suave swagger is back! Antonio Banderas is the Frankenstein/Marquis De Sade-ish medical practitioner who keeps a deep dark secret. He was absolutely brilliant in this one.
The exquisite, stunning and talented Elena Anaya has captivated me once again. Gorgeous is an understatement. I was enamored by those beautiful eyes. Her interactions with the maid, doctor and The Cat were captivating and sinister.
I can proudly say “This is one of my favorites of 2011”. Twisted, sick and interesting. A different kind of torture horror, with a dash of mystery and suspense. Mashing up genres and delivering astonishingly sexy visuals.
Definitely a “must see”. Revenge most vile.

Puncture (2011)
A David and Goliath law drama about a drug-addicted lawyer who takes on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons.
Based on a true story. - Weiss and Danzinger had been approached by an inventor having trouble selling a safety syringe due to a major industry needle maker and hospital group purchasing organizations pushing back against the introduction of the new, safer syringes.
A medical courtroom drama directed by Adam & Mark Kassen.
Our hero! Why so serious? Chris Evans, takes things to the next level. Reinventing himself as a dramatic actor, and doing it well. Had to shake off his comedic quirks outta my head. Evans is here! His partner Mark Kassen was the Yin to his Yang.
Drugs and law, the perfect combination when dealing with the crooked and deceitful opportunists. I was not expecting much from this film… this caught me off guard. The issue of “clean” needles is something we glance at and ignore. Well it’s on screen now… Learn.
This is something people need to know about. Instead of going through the “real life docu approach” the filmmakers have given some beauty to this ugly world we live in.
People are held back by brutes in politics and greedy medical institutions wrapped in the finger of the powerful and abusive.
A thrilling story backed up by respectable acting, produced excellently. A little something with meat and brain fodder.

The Human Centipede II: Full Sequence (2011)
Inspired by the fictional Dr. Heiter, disturbed loner Martin dreams of creating a 12-person centipede and sets out to realize his sick fantasy.
Tom Six lives up to his promise of an intense sequel!
A film about the film. Obsession… human centipede fans. 100% medically accurate.
Solid performance by Laurence R. Harvey! who plays Martin, a mentally disturbed manchild who lives with his mother and works as a security guard. He religiously watches The Human Centipede (First Sequence) and attempts to replicate the genius of Dr. Heiter. Problem is… He ain’t no surgeon.
My friend Shaun said it best: “I think HC1 had to be made in order for this one to be made, and the end result is a disturbing, brutal, sick, and just really well done if you ask me. i’m reminded of David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) at times, and Man Bites Dog (1992) aka C’est arrivé près de chez vous.”
I completely agree with what my co-horror fan said. The 1st was a “short” turned full length film. This is the fruit of that whimsical medical slaughterfest. A real psycho. Taking back the medical accurate claim and twisting the tables.
The 1st was better but this is a totally different film. Equally as good - with a Black & White approach (there was one or two blood splatter scenes with “red”) and a grittier feel to it.
The Human Centipede: First Sequence (2009) was a novelty film (laughable at times). This Sequel is a Slasher/Psycho Horror. Maintaining it’s “that’s impossible” storyline - watch it for what it is.
Nudity, Violence & Gore! This is the type of entertainment you get from those films that push moral and ethical boundaries of modern cinema.
Two movies similar and different at the same time. Confused? Watch it.

Contagion (2011)
A thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak.
DON’T PANIC! Steven Soderbergh is still on top form. Scaring the world with his monster epidemic.
Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Elliott Gould, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne and Jude Law = POWERHOUSE cast!!! is that even fair? The anticipation is explosive.
A modern day Outbreak (1995), which also had a powerhouse cast: Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr. (back when he was relevant), Donald Sutherland, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman. The similarity of these two films is uncanny, and so were their box office numbers. Excitement to mediocre disappointment. Neither film was “bad”, they just didn’t live up to the advertized (well known cast) hype.
It’s the usual story of an unstoppable virus that spreads like wildfire… The infected become the walking dead, and not in the zombie type of way. Doctors race to find a cure, while the decision makers “beat around the bush” and people PANIC as they always do. Containing it does not solve it.
The problem with big budget epidemic movies is that they’re done so well they project “depressing”. The threat is real. So effective, that they make audiences prefer not to remember it. A nice epidemic drama with a “trace back” storyline.
Oh the drama! and technicalities! The mixture of character stories were an excellent blend. I loved Gwyneth Paltrow’s death scene, i cringed (with joy). I have never seen so many (well acted) disappointed faces in one film.
It ain’t Z-day but it’ll do.

Repo Men (2010)
Set in the near future when artificial organs can be bought on credit, it revolves around a man who struggles to make the payments on a heart he has purchased. He must therefore go on the run before said ticker is repossessed.
Based on the novel “The Repossession Mambo” by Eric Garcia.
This was a good re-visit! Loved it last year love it now. A quick fix, for those in the mood for gore and medical sci-fi. Law and Whitaker were a good tandem. And I forgot how funny Liev Schreiber was in this futuristic action flick!

Excision (2008)
A neglected teen takes refuge in the dreams that used to haunt her and orchestrates a shocking plan to prove her worth to her disapproving parents.
18 minutes of my time well spent! Writer/Director Richard Bates Jr. delivers a nice little medical horror treat.
Tessa Ferrer did a really good job as the medical-curious troubled teen. Such great talent cannot go to waste. A very simple and predictable short film, but enjoyable for gore lovers. Some dark imagery and artsy attempts.
A big THANK YOU to itsnotmuchofacheeseshop for sending me a link. Finally! the long wait is over.

Parasomnia (2008)
A horror-thriller centered on a woman suffering from a medical condition that causes her to sleep her life away, waking briefly on rare occasions.
The first minute of the film was a suicide by “80s it girl”, Sean Young, and i was thinking “not bad”. From that point on it took a downwards dive, it’s like they tried putting too many editing effects tyin’ the creative approach, but too much can be tacky as well.
Enter our cast… The sleeping chick was funny, she made this amusingly ridiculous. The story was terrible. The visual effects looked so outdated, the blue/green screen effects were lousy and the lines were so cheesy. The idea was there, but poorly executed. There was some gore, mediocre and bright colored blood. Man this was bad.
koffenbaum replied to your post: Movies Movies Movies!!!
Parasomnia. Blech. do yourself a favor and cut your wrists open BEFORE the movie. Maybe you will reach a near death euphoria that will allow you to enjoy the movie on some level.
I should have listened. But then again… someone’s gotta watch these “silly” horror films.
