  1. Salvation Boulevard (2011)

Set in the world of mega-churches in which a former Deadhead-turned-born again-Christian finds himself on the run from fundamentalist members of his mega-church who will do anything to protect their larger-than-life pastor.

A blessing of murder! Opening eyes of believers. We are merely human, and not far from sin - ain’t that right Mr. Pastor man? Hypocrite much?

Most of you would/should know i have a personal relationship with reality and science. Religious mockery is a gift i enjoy, god bless open-mindedness and poking at the “holy”. No one s better than the other.

Greg Kinnear is the goofy and troubled man, who’s faith is about to be rocked by… Pastor Dan! Pierce Brosnan!!! This role was HIS, the douchebaggery was superb and that face - you just wanna smash against an ugly wall. The always brilliant Ed Harris drops his 2 cents in and suffers the consequences of being “real”.

The ladies! Two of my crushes: “She’s secretly got the devil inside” Jennifer Connelly and cute “where’s my mind?” hippie Marisa Tomei. My eyes are always fixed whenever they appear on screen.

My favorite part would be the Legend (1985) bit! “The Devil!” AHAHAHAHAHA! sweet.

A dark comedy celebrating “There is only 1 truth, No one knows the truth.” - Being righteous is a doorway to hypocrisy. Justified arguments versus the facts of science and life.

Cheesy and sloppy in delivery (childish at some points)… the message was clear though. This isn’t a cockslap to the face of the church - it’s a simple eye opener that man (no matter who he is) is vulnerable to selfish desires. Not necessarily Evil.

  2. 11-11-11 (2011)

After the death of his wife and child, an author travels to Barcelona to see his estranged brother and dying father, where he learns that his life is plagued by events that occur on 11/11/11.

I am deeply upset… Darren Lynn Bousman gets cheesy.

At first i was intrigued by the logic vs religion banter. But then… the rubber masks and cheap scares came up on the screen. Goddammit.

The church is ridiculous as it is already, why add to it?

The lead actor was forgettable. And the story is “poo”. Banking on religious conspiracies and beliefs on the “11/11/11” phenomenon. People say the numbers are suppose to be lucky, well… i was VERY unlucky to have caught this dribble.

What a let down… if you’re lucky enough this might scare grandma.

  3. Stigmata (1999)

A young woman begins to show signs of stigmata, the wounds of Christ. The priest from the Vatican links up with her and cares for her as she is increasingly afflicted by the stigmata. Her ranting and raving finally begins to make sense to the priest who starts to question what his religion has stood for for the last 1900 years.

A controversial film that will test your faith and make you think otherwise. One of the best religious horrors ever.

I freakin’ love this film, and the Mrs. was happy revisiting this as well.

It’s smart and dark movie that breaks down what we have come to know as fact and makes us wonder about the “what if”… If the church was to be destroyed from within, do you think they would not fight? Of course they would. As proven by history. So many have been killed in the name of… the church.

Director Rupert Wainwright delivers a brave film. I can’t believe this was BANNED (here), understandable, but had it not been for that i think this would have been a forgotten film.

The fact that the church banned this film gives some credibility to it’s faith-shaking powers. Why were they so animate to shut this film down? Guilty of something??? hmmm???

Very 90s visually, but this also had tremendously interesting shots. The film was alive, with constant camera movement and decent special effects. With music by Billy Corgan. Not like the usual boring/slow-paced godly films.

Patricia Arquette is the young woman plagued by the gift. This is one of her best and most memorable roles. And Gabriel Byrne is the scientist/priest, who sets out on disproving religious claims. He’s a mythbuster of sorts… a job i’d gladly take.

The controversial LAST gospel of Jesus: “the Kingdom of God is inside you, and all around you, not in mansions of wood and stone. Split a piece of wood… and I am there, lift a stone… and you will find me.”

What does it mean? Jesus said it himself “WE don’t need the church”.

This was powerful in so many ways. Prepare to have your faith shaken and stirred.

  4. The Book of Eli (2010)

A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

Denzel! I decided to revisit this, and boy was i glad. Directors Albert and Allen Hughes have truly impressed me. The details with the sonic sound during suspense parts was a nice touch/hint.

Denzel! What an amazingly touching/relevant adventure, with well done silhouette fight scenes, accompanied by that Mad Max (1979) feel. I enjoyed the dramatic events, which i usually don’t in a post-apocalyptic film.

Denzel Washington! nobody fucks with Denzel. Gary Oldman was his standard badass methodical schemer who you love to hate. Mila Kunis is smokin’!- and yes, seeing her in this was another motivator to my re-visit/watching.

Some people asked for confirmation: “Is he blind?” I think watching this again would answer that question.

Dark and beautiful. This was definitely a very cool biblical film. Entertaining from start to end!

  5. Martyrs (2008)

A young woman’s quest for revenge against the people who kidnapped and tormented her as a child leads her and a friend, who is also a victim of child abuse, on a terrifying journey into a living hell of depravity.

I was surprised to see this posted on TUMBLR the other day. I couldn’t agree more with the comments that accompanied the post. And so, i searched my archive for my own post. WTF, i didn’t post anything about it, then it hit me. “i wasn’t on TUMBLR yet when i watched this film.” So i HAD to revisit this spectacularly brutal horror!

This is an amazing tale of revenge, pain, hurt, suffering and violence. Both girls were amazing in portraying the roles of the “victims”. Production-wise it was better than most French films and the story… the story… brutal in biblical proportions!

For some viewers this may seem like a gore-fest, but it is not. The movie dwells on the subject matter of “suffering = holyness”. Quite shocking really. Most people who had seen it say “It’s gross”… i disagree. The deeper message of the film overpowers the violence depicted in the film.

This is “for me” is the best artsy/horror/slasher/gore film of 2008! And revisiting it gives me pleasure, thank you TUMBLR.
