  1. Shaolin (2011) aka Xin shao lin si

China is plunged into strife as feuding warlords try to expand their power by warring over neighboring lands. Fuelled by his success on the battlefield, young and arrogant Hao Jie sneers at Shaolin’s masters after killing a rival warlord on their temple grounds. But the glory comes before a fall. His own family is wiped out in an unexpected turn of events and Hao is forced to take refuge with the monks. As the civil unrest spreads and the people suffer, Hao and the Shaolin masters are forced to take a fiery stand against the evil warlords. They launch a daring plan of rescue and escape.

Payback is a bitch! A story of revenge and enlightenment, presented in a grand fashion of top production and well executed Kung-Fu fight choreography.

Two big name action stars in one epic tale. Andy Lau is the man set on changing his world and himself. Joining him on this inner peace adventure is living legend Jackie Chan, as the humble cook.

A blend of action, fantasy and drama. It’s a action blockbuster with big names but mediocre in substance. What happened? As beautiful as it was this turned out to be quite mediocre. With some wholesome humor care of master Jackie Chan. Nicholas Tse plays the deceitful Cao Man, who was quite badass (in a cheesy villainous way).

This film seemed a little too safe (for me). The action and scenery cinematography was superb, but the story lacked that push to make it great. I liked the ruthlessness of the characters and the wisdom passed on to viewers. There is some good stuff here!

A nice movie the whole family can enjoy. Action our dads would love, drama that would break moms heart and a story that teaches youngsters lessons in karma and repentance.

  2. Contagion (2011)

A thriller centered on the threat posed by a deadly disease and an international team of doctors contracted by the CDC to deal with the outbreak.

DON’T PANIC! Steven Soderbergh is still on top form. Scaring the world with his monster epidemic.

Matt Damon, Kate Winslet, Marion Cotillard, Elliott Gould, Gwyneth Paltrow, Laurence Fishburne and Jude Law = POWERHOUSE cast!!! is that even fair? The anticipation is explosive.

A modern day Outbreak (1995), which also had a powerhouse cast: Dustin Hoffman, Kevin Spacey, Cuba Gooding Jr. (back when he was relevant), Donald Sutherland, Rene Russo and Morgan Freeman. The similarity of these two films is uncanny, and so were their box office numbers. Excitement to mediocre disappointment. Neither film was “bad”, they just didn’t live up to the advertized (well known cast) hype.

It’s the usual story of an unstoppable virus that spreads like wildfire… The infected become the walking dead, and not in the zombie type of way. Doctors race to find a cure, while the decision makers “beat around the bush” and people PANIC as they always do. Containing it does not solve it.

The problem with big budget epidemic movies is that they’re done so well they project “depressing”. The threat is real. So effective, that they make audiences prefer not to remember it. A nice epidemic drama with a “trace back” storyline.

Oh the drama! and technicalities! The mixture of character stories were an excellent blend. I loved Gwyneth Paltrow’s death scene, i cringed (with joy). I have never seen so many (well acted) disappointed faces in one film.

    It ain’t Z-day but it’ll do.

  3. Drive (2011)

A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.

BRUTAL!!!! The Pusher Trilogy, Bronson (2008), Valhalla Rising (2009), Fear X (2003)!!! Fuckin’ Genius! Once again.

Based on a book by James Sallis.

Nicolas Winding Refn had me at hello. If i had ovaries… they’d explode for this awesome director!

    “I don’t carry a gun. I drive.”

Ryan Gosling was absolutely stellar! The guy CAN act. Refn has a gift of turning men to badasses! Cold, calculating, violent with heart and bravado.

His co-stars and foes were as brilliant! Carey Mulligan is the epitome of cute. goddamn these blue balls, Christina Hendricks. Add to that the ferocious Ron Perlman & Albert Brooks! And the meek Bryan Cranston. What a fuckin’ cast!

You could cut the tension with a knife. Superb EVERYTHING! from the lighting to the sound to the delivery. The violent scenes were expected, in true Refn form.

TRIVIA: Nicolas Winding Refn’s first film based on a novel, and first film he did not write the script for.

Style and substance combined and mixed to an aperitif of pleasure, drama and visual pleasure before the big meal. A simple true-to-life story of choices and integrity.

There is a reason i have dubbed Nicholas Winding Refn as one of “modern cinemas finest”. THIS is proof.

  4. The Holding (2011)

A heart-pounding suspense thriller, set on an isolated farm in England’s beautiful, rugged Peak District.

Psychopathic father figure thriller, produced by the UK. Big bad man comes into town, gets mom and drives family mad. A familiar story…

We are all victims… because we deserve it? Hmmm, feeding off others pain. Some righteous mumbo jumbo from the crazy vagabond, oddly enough his moves work on the ladies - how the hell does that happen?

Lunatic love can be brutal, family life can get terrifying. The cast was surprisingly great. Pedobear likes blondes with dark eyeliners. They slowly grew on me after a doubtful start.

A dark thriller captured wonderfully on film. Slow start, the pace and visuals intensify as the films goes on, very nice touch. The tone and mood (lighting) was superb once things picked up. This snuck up on me…

The ending was a little funny, this could pass as a great Hallmark/B-movie thriller. It got the message across and managed to keep me glued ‘til the credits.

  5. Cookers (2001)

After stealing a huge stash of drugs, speed freaks Hector and Darena plan to cook up an enormous batch of crystal meth and get rich quick. Hectors old buddy Merle has the perfect hideout / meth lab, an old abandoned farmhouse in the woods where no one will ever find them. Turns out. they may not be alone after all. Paranoid and tormented by demons and terrifying visions, they fall prey to their descending spiral of drug use and mysterious horrifying hallucinations causing the scared and frightened trio to ultimately turn deadly against each other.

Drugs and horror, always a good combination! A good indie or student film, super B haunted house story with some sketchy dealers.

It’s paranoia vs the supernatural in this den of sin. When drugs are present expect a psychological horror. I appreciated the effort put on camera movement and editing, typical amateur movie.

Special effects and scares were cheap. I wasn’t kidding when i described this looking like a student film.

The acting and characters were believable enough and did their jobs rather well. But… It’s kinda hard to appreciate… slow pacing and loads of dialogue drown the horror. Like most drug films, this has got some drama.

Whoever suggested this and gave it high ratings must’ve been on meth.

Crack houses are sad and depressing…

  6. Battleground (2011) aka Skeleton Lake

Six bank robbers become stranded in a off the grid forest when their vehicle goes missing during the planning of their escape from the police. Now stranded and on a time crunch to make their flight headed out of the country they try to walk out of the forest. they soon encounter Hugh Lambe as a Vietnam veteran who was mentally damaged somehow in during the conflict and now kills anyone who enters his forest using his military training and some tactics used by the VietCong.

Holy shit, i couldn’t believe what i just read either… What. a. plot.

Old man Rambo/Hobo with a Shotgun - seriously???

As expected, this was shitty as B gets. Handycam video cinematography with cliche wannabe bad-asses. Some crazy ol’ acting with pellet guns and dumb lines. WHAT?!?!? HE, among all the characters… HE survives?!? Fuck this…

What a waste, fuckin’ deceiving poster… pig anus.

  7. Creature (2011)

In the back country of Louisiana, a group of friends unearth a terrible secret that unleashes a monster from the depths of the swamp.

Boobs in the 1st 30 seconds, it’s that kind of film. A man in a rubber suit bayou horror… lord have mercy.

Family ties taken to the extreme and the last hope for the family name is killed by a giant croc. Man kills a savage croc and eats it. He then turns into “Grimley”… the legendary lizardman. What the fuck, right? Remind me not to eat crocodile raw.

Uuugh… the usual, a group of friends go out of town… everyone dies… blood…

It’s got the exploitation legend Sid Haig! sweet. The chicks were ok lookin’… the guys sucked balls. Gore-wise it was totally B and the overall presentation just sucked. Amateurs, they make me snicker.

The “creature” was plain ridiculous, no effort was put into making this monster any bit scary or real. Just look at that damn poster!

How i survived this movie to the end is a mystery. Save yourselves the time… “Intentionally bad” or just really bad.

  8. The Guard (2011)

An unorthodox Irish policeman with a confrontational personality is teamed up with an uptight FBI agent to investigate an international drug-smuggling ring.

A racy debut by writer-director John Michael McDonagh.

The fighting Irish… officers of the law face-off against vicious dealers.

Brilliant, just fucken brilliant! Brendan Gleeson is the man! He loves women in uniform, and so do i. He had great chemistry with (equally as awesome) FBI agent Don Cheadle. Evil twats Mark Strong and Liam Cunningham did the deed and dropped some laughs. Along with a bunch of odd folks.

“I can’t tell if you’re smart or stupid”

I really enjoyed the simplicity  and douchebaggery of it all. Well written, acted, produced and directed.

  9. Little Johnny the Movie (2011)

Celebrates the wrongest jokes ever told. It’s a coming of age story that’s brimming with irreverent humor, larger-than-life characters, and crackling action to boot! It will remind you of the great cartoons of yesteryear.

There are Aussie films and there are Aussie ‘Toons!!!

Ah yeah, fuck yeah, let’s curse ya!?! Leave it to the naivety of a young boy, with a foul mouth.

Witty with a dash of “fuck” and timing. A full length film, chopped into nice snippets of stand-up. Definitely not for kids.

The poster and the plot synopsis has great claims… fuck that. I had high hopes and was left short changed. It’s funny, but it ain’t that good. I hated the rooster bits… juvenile.

The animation was/is CRAP. Watch it for the humor/content.

  10. Rolling (2007)

A med student, a teenage runaway, a lawyer, a drag queen, a high school basketball player, a drug dealer, and a teacher all cross paths in the Ecstasy-riddled L.A. underground party scene. Rolling is a turbulent journey that takes a tough yet entertaining look at this unique drug phenomenon. With the pace and style of a documentary, Rolling captures the essence of Ecstasy culture, exposing the delicate balance of relationships and responsibilities with chasing this drug-induced euphoria.

Ecstasy black propaganda! Hiding behind a disguise of a good trip. Meeeeemories…

A B-drug flick, with some terrible expected acting. From the get go we are given a docu-style treatment, with interviews from the chosen few.

Both good points and bad points are discussed and “acted” out for viewers. I’ll tell you this much… it’s a misinterpretation. Drugs are better than this!

The tunes were ok and the story unfolded well, they tried to do too much and it seemed like a lecture rather than entertaining. The end is “proof” of this being a WARNING to all.

    “Drugs are bad M’kay?”

I did like the “face melting” scene and some of the lesbo action. Thank you ecstasy!!! A many women HAVE entertained men throughout the years. The downside of drug use is common knowledge, we can tune in to Oprah for that.

What am i saying? This ain’t no fun flick. B grade with a lesson to be learned. Experienced viewers may find humor in this and reminisce, drug free viewers might just eject this after the 1st few minutes.

    Bring out the glow-sticks!

  11. The Hangover Part II (2011)

Two years after the bachelor party in Las Vegas, Phil, Stu, Alan, and Doug jet to Thailand for Stu’s wedding. Stu’s plan for a subdued pre-wedding brunch, however, goes seriously awry.

    Dear lord… BangCOCK!

The wolfpack is back!!! Bradley Cooper, Zach Galifianakis, Ken Jeong, Ed Helms and director Todd Phillips. Back for some unadulterated adventures!!!

Was it better than the 1st? Fuck if i know, i laughed my ass off in this one. The sequel to a fucked up night forgotten, same shit different day. Oh and a monkey…

A snowball of stupidity and some family crap i really couldn’t care about. Bring on the drugs, booze and boobs! Over the top characters with a story that flows like… smooth diarrhea.

Definitely not for the whole family, this is a frat film for the fans of perversions. I loved it! This brought me back to 2001-2005, lovely.

Wanna know what happens? Fuck that, Go watch it for yourself- with some beers, bud and friends.

  12. Submarine (2010)

15-year-old Oliver Tate has two objectives: To lose his virginity before his next birthday, and to extinguish the flame between his mother and an ex-lover who has resurfaced in her life.

Based on the novel by Joe Dunthorne.

It would be cliche to call this “a British coming of age comedy”, but it totally is.

Refreshing! This had heart and a funny bone. Directed by The IT Crowd (2006) fro-hair funnyman Richard Ayoade. Good debut!

The narration (flow/pacing) was brilliant and gave this film a solemn and distinct aura of realism through the lens. Matched with some sarcasm and wit, with accompaniment of chapter breaks. Life is truly colorful.

“Smart kid” Craig Roberts was terrific in the leading role. His tandem with Yasmin Paige was cute and vibrant. Fresh talent is always appreciated. The story of their characters took me back to my younger years, goddamn. Young love, sweet love. I believe we will be seeing more of Craig Roberts in the near future.

The demoralized bum-lookin’ dad Noah Taylor, was darkly hilarious. “I am exciting and delicious” Paddy Considine is the flashy and bizarre motivator, with a questionable motive. All the characters were endearing…

Impressive and profound, with all too familiar banter. The music added that “And so it is…” vibe. Viewers can expect to take something with them after watching this, some good stuff here. Not an award winning film, but one to pass on and share.

The “Tragedy and Comedy” of life… a backhand bitchslap of reality that makes you all fuzzy inside.

  13. The River Murders (2011)

A homicide detective, Ray Liotta, while investigating a series of murders becomes the prime suspect when the FBI uncovers his close personal ties to all the victims.

Oh boy, a serial killer flick! hmmm… sauce was weak!

A lighter depiction of the mystery chase thriller we get from the usual Hollywood blockbuster. Suffice to say, this was a “B”.

Ray Liotta is the man caught between suspicion and guilt. I wasn’t too impressed with his portrayal n this one. He’s back! Christian Slater is the resident douche, and Ving Rhames rounds up the familiars.

Murder most foul, with a serial killer chase leading to the past. I laughed at the “twist”, i admit it believable… on the psychological level… but “C’mon man”.

This let me down in the end. Once was enough.

  14. Conan the Barbarian (2011)

The tale of Conan the Cimmerian and his adventures across the continent of Hyboria on a quest to avenge the murder of his father and the slaughter of his village.

A modern version of the 1982 classic action adventure fantasy. Based on the stories of Robert E. Howard.

Khal Drogo lives! Jason Momoa brought the hero back to life, he ain’t no Schwarzenegger, nevertheless portrayed the hero well. A good stepping stone for his leading man career.

And look, surprises! Ron Perlman as the father of Conan?!? Sweet. And the beautifully horrendous Rose McGowan! I’m upset her project with Robert Rodriguez “Red Sonja” didn’t push through… Red Sonja was a spinoff of the original Conan novels.

It looked and felt like the original, and maybe that’s where the fault lies for it’s mediocrity. They stuck to the old formula, which was not welcomed by modern day cinema goes and critics. It was a good attempt.

This did not impress early viewers, take it for what it is… a “rental”.

See it for what it is, a musclebound hero gutting and slashing his way to revenge. Conan.
