A Lonely Place to Die (2011)
A group of mountaineers in the Scottish Highlands discover a kidnapped girl and are pursued by her captors.
Off to the mountains! For some R&R and… death.
Directed by Julian Gilbey, who surprised me with his rowdy and violent Rise of the Footsoldier (2007).
Hell yeah! A survival thriller starring Melissa George - who came out in a bunch of horror films (I personally enjoyed): Triangle (2009), Turistas (2006), 30 Days of Night (2007) and The Amityville Horror (2005). Horror-suspense-thriller is her genre, she can sell it.
A British adventure horror looming in the realm of “it could happen” or “it’s fairly possible”. Adding fright to an already frightful separation from civilization. You’re on your own…
It’s a nail biting ride that slowly edges through the crime genre. Hikers discover a child in the forest “who’s she?” And in a blink of an eye - they fall one by one. There is little information given about the mountaineers and the criminals that surround them. The suspense bit and sudden shocks are what this film’s all about.Yeah, this ain’t an award winner. Some may even call it “stupid” - But if you’re looking for some thrills and death spills, this one’s for you.
What gave this film strength was the foley/sound effects used in death/violent scenes, you can hear ‘em bones break. I cringed a few times. Another thing that kept my interest was one of the criminals - The fat bearded one. He was very horror monster-ish.
The scenery and dialogue was… sorta typical, BUT this film got me. I can’t quite put my finger on where or how.
Watch it for what it is… a survival/chase thriller.

The Hunters (2011)
A group of friends spend a weekend in the woods and find themselves trapped with no way out. They will soon become prey to the hunters.
Another average horror with hooligans and guns. I’d call this a thriller, with a semi-hot babe. The characters were typical and the gore/violence was “meh”. B. There’s not much to say but… Run, run for your lives!
I got bored halfway through and suffered ‘til the end. It was “ok” but not something i’d endorse.
Seen it all too many times… Amateurs.

Snowtown (2011)
Based on true events, 16 year-old Jamie falls in with his mother’s new boyfriend and his crowd of self-appointed neighborhood watchmen, a relationship that leads to a spree of torture and murder.
Based on a true story and the books: The Snowtown Murders by Andrew McGarry and Killing for Pleasure by Debi Marshall.
Disturbing! and a brutal Aussie flick by director Justin Kurzel. The horror of humanity.
Trapped in a world of violence and sexual frustrations. John is a sick motherfucker. Come Jaime join John in the dark side. This brings up WHY vigilantes are a threat to society.
The “Bodies in Barrels” murdersstory of the most famous Australia serial killer John Bunting.
The acting was SUPERB! You can feel they went “all in” on their performances. Everyone played their part well and delivered one of the most traumatizing films from down under.
Rape, pedophilia and murder. The pacing was a bit slow, but the weight of the issues tackled kept me glued. You just know in the back of your head “This will not end well” - for our characters.
TRIVIA: More than 250 suppression orders prevented publication of details of this case. In early 2011, a judge lifted the remaining orders in response to a request by the producers of the film Snowtown, a dramatic account of the murders.
Deep and brave in many ways. Not an award winning piece, one that opens eyes. Clean and properly done.
Abuse in it’s purest form. Evil camouflaged. Mankind at its worst.

Hostel: Part III (2011)
While attending a bachelor party in Las Vegas, four friends are enticed by two sexy escorts to join them at a private party way off the Strip. Once there, they are horrified to find themselves the subjects of a perverse game of torture, where members of the Elite Hunting Club are hosting the most sadistic show in town.
Weak.
NOT directed by Eli Roth… oh boy… straight to video…
Killing in sin city - the grimy foreign “hostel” fear has gone out the window. The story nothing new, the acting was mediocre and the gore was unsatisfying and tame. What the hell happened here?
Another example of “let it go”. The fun, excitement and anxiety is lost in this TURD attempt at shock-torture-horror. What did you expect?
I’d avoid this if i knew what was in store for me… But i DO LIKE Hostel (And Eli Roth). Call me a sucker for violence and gore.

The Skin I Live In (2011) aka La piel que habito
A brilliant plastic surgeon, haunted by past tragedies, creates a type of synthetic skin that withstands any kind of damage. His guinea pig: a mysterious and volatile woman who holds the key to his obsession.
Talk to Her (2002) and Volver (2006) Spanish maestro Pedro Almodóvar is back with a twisted dark medical romance. Me gusta!
Suave swagger is back! Antonio Banderas is the Frankenstein/Marquis De Sade-ish medical practitioner who keeps a deep dark secret. He was absolutely brilliant in this one.
The exquisite, stunning and talented Elena Anaya has captivated me once again. Gorgeous is an understatement. I was enamored by those beautiful eyes. Her interactions with the maid, doctor and The Cat were captivating and sinister.
I can proudly say “This is one of my favorites of 2011”. Twisted, sick and interesting. A different kind of torture horror, with a dash of mystery and suspense. Mashing up genres and delivering astonishingly sexy visuals.
Definitely a “must see”. Revenge most vile.

The Devil’s Double (2011)
A chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein comes to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein’s sadistic son.
Based on the life & novel of Latif Yahia.
Pack your bags for a trip to Baghdad!
Dominic Cooper, Dominic Cooper, Dominic Cooper!!! remember that name. The guy fuckin’ rocked the shit out of this film. 2 equally exquisite performances, he has range. Gaddam Saddam!
“I made you Latif, I MADE YOU!!!”
Ruling a country has never been this good or notorious. BADASS! from beginning to end. This had drugs, women, guns, action, suspense… EVERYTHING!
The feel and vibe was very The Last King of Scotland (2006) = Brutally good!
I was blown away! this is a good one folks. The story is one to remember. We all know of the “famous” body doubles of Saddam, but his son… oh my… his son… is a different devil all together.
A roller coaster ride of abuse and duty.

Retreat (2011)
Kate and Martin escape from personal tragedy to an Island Retreat. Cut off from the outside world, their attempts to recover are shattered when a Man is washed ashore, with news of airborne killer disease that is sweeping through Europe.
A couple (Cillian Murphy and Thandie Newton) are taking a break in a cabin when… a stranger (Jamie Bell) comes knocking on their doorstep. What could possibly go wrong?
Debut of writer/director Carl Tibbetts. I see what you did there. Typical but it’s got a virus twist. Z day anyone? Human apocalyptic hysteria is always good fuel.
The acting was… mediocre. Surprising, considering the good trio of actors.
I didn’t quite like the film as a whole. It felt empty and had many possible improvements. “Seen it too many times” - maybe.
This was “ok” but bordering “fail”… something was missing - and i can’t put my finger on it. It’s a sunday afternoon flick.

Trespass (2011)
As they’re held for ransom, a husband and wife’s predicament grows more dire amid the discovery of betrayal and deception.
Twists and turns in a film we’ve all seen before… CAGE!!!
Joel Schumacher delivers the… usual? Yep. Sadly this is another one of those…
Nicolas Cage & Nicole Kidman WOW! how could this possibly fail??? Make everything a conspiracy, when the truth is so simple. Throughout the film, stupidity and absurdness reigns supreme. “How convenient”
The bad guys weren’t so bad, they sucked. One thing i did like (and most Pedobears would) was the daughter, Liana Liberato, looks like a young Sasha Grey! BOING!!!
All in all it was a suspenseful hours or so… filled with nonsense and avoidable situations.
CAGE is CAGE!

Drive (2011)
A Hollywood stunt performer who moonlights as a wheelman discovers that a contract has been put on him after a heist gone wrong.
BRUTAL!!!! The Pusher Trilogy, Bronson (2008), Valhalla Rising (2009), Fear X (2003)!!! Fuckin’ Genius! Once again.
Based on a book by James Sallis.
Nicolas Winding Refn had me at hello. If i had ovaries… they’d explode for this awesome director!
“I don’t carry a gun. I drive.”
Ryan Gosling was absolutely stellar! The guy CAN act. Refn has a gift of turning men to badasses! Cold, calculating, violent with heart and bravado.
His co-stars and foes were as brilliant! Carey Mulligan is the epitome of cute. goddamn these blue balls, Christina Hendricks. Add to that the ferocious Ron Perlman & Albert Brooks! And the meek Bryan Cranston. What a fuckin’ cast!
You could cut the tension with a knife. Superb EVERYTHING! from the lighting to the sound to the delivery. The violent scenes were expected, in true Refn form.
TRIVIA: Nicolas Winding Refn’s first film based on a novel, and first film he did not write the script for.
Style and substance combined and mixed to an aperitif of pleasure, drama and visual pleasure before the big meal. A simple true-to-life story of choices and integrity.
There is a reason i have dubbed Nicholas Winding Refn as one of “modern cinemas finest”. THIS is proof.

The Dead (2011)
When the last evacuation flight out of war-torn Africa crashes off the coast, American Air Force Engineer Lieutenant Brian Murphy emerges as the sole survivor in a land where the dead are returning to life and attacking the living. When Murphys path clashes with that of Sergeant Daniel Dembele, whose village has been torn apart by the reanimated dead, they join forces. The two desperate men from two very different cultures fight side by side to survive across the incredible vistas of Africa as the world succumbs to the deadliest of viruses.
Hello Africa, tell me how you doin’? Freakin’ beautiful!!! Gimme some gore, gimme some gorgeous scenery, give me the best zombie movie i’ve seen all year!
Dramatic brain bashing. A stunningly shot horror on 35mm film, by the writing/directing duo “the Ford Brothers”. Holy crap “I loved this!”, it felt real/genuine in spirit and delivery. The prosthetic effects were superb! Goddamn.
This film snuck behind me, bit me on the neck and tore my eyes out. This ain’t your typical zombie film. The tone and mood are up there with Romero and other legendary thrillers, dark and creepy. This ain’t a videogame Z-flick nor is it a Zomedy.
Leading men, Rob Freeman and Prince David Osei camaraderie and values were admirable. And their performances? Brilliant. Yeah they may not be bigtime actors, but they got the job done.
Zombie Lovers, if you want a serious take on the Zombie epidemic - you should definitely catch this one! Simple and yet not so simple. This isn’t an award winner, but it’s up there with the 2011 films i will remember.
The story could have been “deeper” - fuck that. It’s a Z-day movie, what the hell are you expecting? Survive it. This was thrilling and a breath of fresh air, as compared to the millions of cheap Z-day horror wannabes.
A slow paced headshot to modern cinema. What are you waiting for? Watch it now!

The Holding (2011)
A heart-pounding suspense thriller, set on an isolated farm in England’s beautiful, rugged Peak District.
Psychopathic father figure thriller, produced by the UK. Big bad man comes into town, gets mom and drives family mad. A familiar story…
We are all victims… because we deserve it? Hmmm, feeding off others pain. Some righteous mumbo jumbo from the crazy vagabond, oddly enough his moves work on the ladies - how the hell does that happen?
Lunatic love can be brutal, family life can get terrifying. The cast was surprisingly great. Pedobear likes blondes with dark eyeliners. They slowly grew on me after a doubtful start.
A dark thriller captured wonderfully on film. Slow start, the pace and visuals intensify as the films goes on, very nice touch. The tone and mood (lighting) was superb once things picked up. This snuck up on me…
The ending was a little funny, this could pass as a great Hallmark/B-movie thriller. It got the message across and managed to keep me glued ‘til the credits.

Cookers (2001)
After stealing a huge stash of drugs, speed freaks Hector and Darena plan to cook up an enormous batch of crystal meth and get rich quick. Hectors old buddy Merle has the perfect hideout / meth lab, an old abandoned farmhouse in the woods where no one will ever find them. Turns out. they may not be alone after all. Paranoid and tormented by demons and terrifying visions, they fall prey to their descending spiral of drug use and mysterious horrifying hallucinations causing the scared and frightened trio to ultimately turn deadly against each other.
Drugs and horror, always a good combination! A good indie or student film, super B haunted house story with some sketchy dealers.
It’s paranoia vs the supernatural in this den of sin. When drugs are present expect a psychological horror. I appreciated the effort put on camera movement and editing, typical amateur movie.
Special effects and scares were cheap. I wasn’t kidding when i described this looking like a student film.
The acting and characters were believable enough and did their jobs rather well. But… It’s kinda hard to appreciate… slow pacing and loads of dialogue drown the horror. Like most drug films, this has got some drama.
Whoever suggested this and gave it high ratings must’ve been on meth.
Crack houses are sad and depressing…

Creature (2011)
In the back country of Louisiana, a group of friends unearth a terrible secret that unleashes a monster from the depths of the swamp.
Boobs in the 1st 30 seconds, it’s that kind of film. A man in a rubber suit bayou horror… lord have mercy.
Family ties taken to the extreme and the last hope for the family name is killed by a giant croc. Man kills a savage croc and eats it. He then turns into “Grimley”… the legendary lizardman. What the fuck, right? Remind me not to eat crocodile raw.
Uuugh… the usual, a group of friends go out of town… everyone dies… blood…
It’s got the exploitation legend Sid Haig! sweet. The chicks were ok lookin’… the guys sucked balls. Gore-wise it was totally B and the overall presentation just sucked. Amateurs, they make me snicker.
The “creature” was plain ridiculous, no effort was put into making this monster any bit scary or real. Just look at that damn poster!
How i survived this movie to the end is a mystery. Save yourselves the time… “Intentionally bad” or just really bad.

Final Destination 5 (2011)
Survivors of a suspension-bridge collapse learn there’s no way you can cheat Death.
We all know where this is headed… Death… and then some. Not bad for the debut of director Steven Quale.
A working formula done for the 5th time. Doesn’t it get old? No, not to us “original” death scene voyeurs.
Much like the intricate Saw traps of the mastermind Jigsaw, fans come out to see “how they die”. Trying to outdo the last film…
F-Yeah! Tony Todd. Now let’s skip the rest of the actors and get right to it. The “deaths” were mediocre BUT with the help of 3D it was “ok”. An all too familiar “Hollywood Gore” style, clean and neat. Not like the grotesque indie films which amplify the shock (gore/details) value rather than a cheap “Boo!” scare.
I must say “It’s pretty fuckin’ stupid… it’s final destination FIVE”
Final Destination is not so shocking… you know their gonna die, you just don’t know how (if predictability evades you). Some impressive deaths and some lame ones, y’ get it all here.
That’s it… it’s the same potato. This was definitely better than the last Final Destination, but uses a cheap thrill formula which offers nothing but death. Dry, simple and straight to the point.
