  1. The Devil’s Double (2011)

A chilling vision of the House of Saddam Hussein comes to life through the eyes of the man who was forced to become the double of Hussein’s sadistic son.

Based on the life & novel of Latif Yahia.

Pack your bags for a trip to Baghdad!

Dominic Cooper, Dominic Cooper, Dominic Cooper!!! remember that name. The guy fuckin’ rocked the shit out of this film. 2 equally exquisite performances, he has range. Gaddam Saddam!

“I made you Latif, I MADE YOU!!!”

Ruling a country has never been this good or notorious. BADASS! from beginning to end. This had drugs, women, guns, action, suspense… EVERYTHING!

The feel and vibe was very The Last King of Scotland (2006) = Brutally good!

I was blown away! this is a good one folks. The story is one to remember. We all know of the “famous” body doubles of Saddam, but his son… oh my… his son… is a different devil all together.

A roller coaster ride of abuse and duty.

  2. Puncture (2011)

A David and Goliath law drama about a drug-addicted lawyer who takes on a health supply corporation while battling his own personal demons.

Based on a true story. - Weiss and Danzinger had been approached by an inventor having trouble selling a safety syringe due to a major industry needle maker and hospital group purchasing organizations pushing back against the introduction of the new, safer syringes.

A medical courtroom drama directed by Adam & Mark Kassen.

Our hero! Why so serious? Chris Evans, takes things to the next level. Reinventing himself as a dramatic actor, and doing it well. Had to shake off his comedic quirks outta my head. Evans is here! His partner Mark Kassen was the Yin to his Yang.

Drugs and law, the perfect combination when dealing with the crooked and deceitful opportunists. I was not expecting much from this film… this caught me off guard. The issue of “clean” needles is something we glance at and ignore. Well it’s on screen now… Learn.

This is something people need to know about. Instead of going through the “real life docu approach” the filmmakers have given some beauty to this ugly world we live in.

People are held back by brutes in politics and greedy medical institutions wrapped in the finger of the powerful and abusive.

A thrilling story backed up by respectable acting, produced excellently. A little something with meat and brain fodder.

  3. The Bang Bang Club (2010)

A drama based on the true-life experiences of four combat photographers capturing the final days of apartheid in South Africa.

In YO face! well not exactly… but this was a great tale of a few. Brave “conflict” Pioneers. The story behind the story.

Based on the book “The Bang-Bang Club Snapshots from a Hidden War” by João Silva.

Ryan Phillippe back on the leading man seat! Malin Akerman fuck yeah. Great production with greater results. Everyone involved did their job well, evident in the final product.

Since this is a film about badass photographers, one would expect great shots. This film delivered the beauty and shock of a world in turmoil. Gain, loss, wants and needs - human drama in the center of hell.

Drama at it’s finest - it’s based on a real group of photogs who brushed away self preservation to capture inhumane images and destructive behavior of man.

A good film by TV-Docu director Steven Silver. If you missed it, grab a copy now!

  4. Hachiko: A Dog’s Story (2009) aka Hachi: A Dog’s Tale

A drama based on the true story of a college professor’s bond with the abandoned dog he takes into his home.

Go Home! you stupid, stupid dog… go home…

This breaks my heart every time. What a tearjerker, brilliant from start to end. Excellent acting, cinematography, editing and animal training. This is as good and professional as it gets.

Richard Gere was bright as day, a refreshing ray of sunshine… which has a sunset. His smile towards the dog felt “warm” and authentic. And the dogs reaction was complementary.

The supporting cast was fun to see: Jason Alexander, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, Erick Avari and Davenia McFadden added their little quirks to the story.

Did i cry or tear up? The first time. Yes. I had an Akita named Maria Juana (R.I.P. 2008). That’s why i ask people “Have you seen Hachi?”, when they answer “No” i grin and say “let’s watch it”, eagerly anticipating the looks on their “boo hoo” faces.

I’ve gotta see that statue of Hachiko that stands outside of Shibuya Station in Tokyo.

    Man’s best friend, indeed.

  5. Sonicsgate (2009)

Exposing the truth behind the Seattle SuperSonics’ tragic exodus after 41 years in the Emerald City.

The TRUTH exposed, for everyone to see!!! FUCK YOU Starbucks!

Great job by the sonicsgate.org group “Bring back our Sonics!!!”. A city loses a team another gains it… how? through FUCKED UP (dark/abusive/corrupt) BUSINESS.

The politics behind basketball is ridiculous, and just plain selfish. Basketball IS the fans, the people ARE basketball. This is a sad story of something loved leaving…

Kudos to Oklahoma City Thunder for doing well in the playoffs this year. We ain’t mad at you.

    Goddamn, i miss the Sonics…

And in closing: CONGRATULATIONS to the 2011 NBA champs!!! the DALLAS MAVERICKS and for proving that: Championships are earned, NOT bought.

  6. Mr. Nice (2010)

The life story of Howard Marks, an elite British drug smuggler.

Finally, a feel good smuggler film! Never have British comedy and pot been so good. Not bad MR. Bernard Rose director of… WHAT?!? Candyman (1992)?!?

We get the typical story of a man who gets into the world of drugs and fast cash, only to see it dissolve before his very eyes.

Kinda like the film Blow (2001)… exchange Johnny Depp with the kooky (crazy) looking Rhys Ifans and some Afghan Hash and you’ve got yourself a dramatic comedy. The guy’s dumbfounded face amuses me. And he’s got that sly look as well. Excellent performance.

Chloë Sevigny was superb as the main babe. She sold me her role and was lookin’ better/prettier i think (less weird looking). Remus Lupin David Thewlis makes a drugged out contribution, stepping away from the popular Potter character. I’m sure they were stoned when they filmed. Probably. Maybe. they did.

“wipe that smile off your cock!”

The humor was all good and well. It broke some of the tense and upsetting drama. But have no fear, this is a bright drug film, of sorts. Tragic, but thankfully… you’ll see when you watch this.

A bizarre and amazing true story, wrapped with secrets and greed. Not an all-out-big-budget blockbuster… a good and steady drug film.

And like all drug films, this leaves viewers with with a lesson “Drugs are bad m’kay”

    Roll up, light up, watch.

  7. Bronson (2008)

A young man who was sentenced to 7 years on prison for robbing a post office ends up spending 30 years in solitary confinement. During this time, his own personality is supplanted by his alter ego, Charles Bronson.

This moves embodies the word “BADASS”!

After hearing Tom Hardy was gonna play Bane in Batman: The Dark Knight Rises (2012) i just had to revisit this (tremendous performance) masterpiece by, one of my favorite contemporary directors, Nicolas Winding Refn.

Monumental, bizarre, humorous, violent and stone cold. Based on a true story/life of notorious/enraged inmate Michael Gordon Peterson. This was absolutely brutal and fun, now this is a fight! The theatrical (stage) presentation was admirable and adds a different spectrum to the film. Does this movie sensationalize violence? indeed it does.

The supporting cast of oddballs and lunatics were excellent as well. As a whole this movie has so much to offer, even the funny tunes of the times. The dialogue was great and the narration by the “stage” Bronson was even better. Cinematography was perfect, Refn’s eye has captivated me. All his movies (that i have seen) have made me say out loud “Fuck Yeah!”.

Hardy was iconic and gives his all in what i would say is his “performance of a lifetime”. Much like John Turturro in Fear X (2003) & Mads Mikkelsen in Valhalla Rising (2009). Refn knows how to “bring it” out of his leading men.

You want entertainment? you got it! A vivid psychotic masterpiece about fighting the prison system. And I really mean “fight”.

“I am Charlie Bronson I am Britain’s most violent prisoner”

  8. Dear Mr. Gacy (2010)

A chronicle of the interaction between college student Jason Moss and the object of his obsession, serial killer John Wayne Gacy.

A nice little psychological film -based on a true story. “Who’s playing who?” mind games and deception are driving factors to this film. A very simple production, audiences attention will be grabbed by the strange/brave tale of one young man.

Who has the guts to face the demon? Jason Moss does! played by Jesse Moss??? for a while there i thought it was the same guy. But it’s not. Pretty decent job, he and madman William Forsythe were great (considering everything else). I thought the supporting cast was “weak” and typical. Like a Hallmark drama.

I need to do more research on the “facts” about this serial killer tale. Pretty “brave” of Moss to do his thesis on one of the most notorious mind (and body)-fuck criminals. The man is a monster… or is he?

At the end i smiled… when tables are turned it’s hard to say who the real “bad guy” is. Decent film, ain’t anything great. But if you follow/enjoy stories about serial killers, this may satisfy you.

Based on the best-selling book “The Last Victim”

  9. The King’s Speech (2010)

The story of King George VI of Britain, his impromptu ascension to the throne and the speech therapist who helped the unsure monarch become worthy of it.

A historical drama about battling a not-so-funny impediment. Based on a true story… Who says movies don’t teach you anything? It may not be exactly how it went, it’s still an interesting story.

Colin Firth makes a tremendous return to the limelight as the stuttering king. His chemistry with the brilliant Geoffrey Rush was enjoyable to watch. Their conversation grabs you. Helena Bonham Carter was definitely a “Queen” Elizabeth. Such a strong woman. And big brother Guy Pearce wraps up this exceptional cast.

Great technical work and a interesting look at misfortune and redemption. Grand and wholesome. A story we can all learn from. Perseverance pays off. In the wise words of Rob Schneider “You can do it!”

Royalty seen with a sympathetic eye. This movie had “heart”.

  10. Conviction (2010)

A working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.

    Based on a true story.

Justice prevails!!! Established TV director Tony Goldwyn gives us a courtroom family drama, starring “Ms. Drama” Hilary Swank. This was heavy and as real as it gets. Her resilience/tenacity reminded me of the film/person/character Erin Brockovich (2000).

What really affected me was the fact that i do have a loved one held in custody, for almost 3 years now. And have personally witnessed the “Fuck-ups” of the justice system. People have a hard time accepting/admitting they were wrong.

Sam Rockwell is the unfortunate brother/father who is wrongfully convicted. Man he spent a lot of time for something he didn’t commit. Talk about “damn!”. Assisting Swank is Minnie Driver, “where have you been?”. And making a craked-out-hick appearance is Juliette Lewis.

Powerful and really reminded me of those “really good” Hallmark court dramas. It’s got the feel of those documentary styled/re-enacted exposes about “true crimes”. This was a crime perpetrated by the courts and justice system. Shame, shame…

Pretty good. A bit long, but hey! aren’t all courtroom dramas?

  11. True Grit (2010)

A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father’s murderer.

Started 2011 with a bang!!! The Coen Brothers revive True Grit (1969), a western tale based on the novel by Charles Porti.

The brothers have never failed to amaze and impress, bringing back a simple old story with their own style. Their latest film does not stray from the success of their past movies. I’ve heard so much buzz about True Grit… i just HAD to see it. It was as they said it was, a fun and gritty adventure.

    Oh boy! what. a. cast.

Jeff Bridges has had a very busy 2010 (end), being dude-tron and then now the one-eyed drunk gunslinger. Serious and funny, classic. And “woah! i may have lost my Matt Damon hate” undeniably the man can act, I have now accepted the fact Damon is AN ACTOR. Josh Brolin has been very impressive as of late, but doin’ the cowboy thing again??? This year, i wanna see him flex his acting skills in another genre/style.

Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld steals the show!!! as far as foodmustache and I were concerned. This movie would be nothing without that little girl. She drove this film, and complemented her infamous co-stars. This girl is gonna be big.

A simple tale of revenge and how it all unfolds, (of course) the film is 99% character driven, it’s a western. Considering i have not read or seen the classic version, It was good and i was very pleased. Yeee-Haw!!!

  12. Manson, My Name Is Evil (2009) aka Leslie, My Name Is Evil

Perry, a sheltered chemical engineer, falls in love with Leslie, a former homecoming princess, when he becomes a jury member at her hippie death cult murder trial.

Kristen Hager stars in this (somewhat) artsy re-telling of the story of how Charles Manson lured and enticed his female cohorts. This story unfolds like a courtroom drama, adding a side story of a juror who’s verdict/opinion contradicts most of his peers.

This was entertaining, but i expected a lot more. Done under a obviously small budget, with minimalistic sets, costumes and effects. And there were so many questions to the authenticity of the acts/craziness portrayed by the characters.

I wouldn’t consider this a fail, I thought it was fun. But i must say, a better Manson film would be Helter Skelter (2004).

  13. Confessions of a Dangerous Mind (2002)

An adaptation of the cult memoir of game show impresario Chuck Barris, in which he purports to have been a CIA hitman.

Director George Clooney brings us a nice and quirky biographical tale. Living a double life… Wonderfully done! A great comedy of twists and turns that veer to the dark, acted by modern cinemas finest. what more could you ask for?

Sam Rockwell is awesome as Chuck Barris, author and star of this story. A story that makes you wonder, even after viewing… captivating from the very beginning.

Be sure to grab a copy. It’s quite good. And watch out for a few cameos.
