Blackthorn (2011)
In Bolivia, Butch Cassidy (now calling himself James Blackthorn) pines for one last sight of home, an adventure that aligns him with a young robber and makes the duo a target for gangs and lawmen alike.
Westerns are back! This time takin’ it the slow route. The sights and sounds of a time of guns and thieves.
An outlaw takes refuge in a land far far away ‘til his past catches up with him. Payback can be a bitch. Making up for past dues is honorable and yet not forgivable. Out time too shall pass.
Getting one over the other.
Veteran Sam Shepard is Butch Cassidy! His reckless youth taught him to be a better man. A very lucky man. Alongside him is Spanish actor Eduardo Noriega. They trek the land in search for treasure. Crooks and cons.
Overall this was a pleasant treat. Steady and dramatic. A good western with nice shots and scenery. The story was neat and the actors were convincing.
A film your dad might want to see.

3:10 to Yuma (2007)
A small-time rancher agrees to hold a captured outlaw who’s awaiting a train to go to court in Yuma. A battle of wills ensues as the outlaw tries to psych out the rancher.
Remake of the classic western 3:10 to Yuma (1957).
James Mangold brings back a legend, wonderfully executed! I think The Wolverine (2013) is in good hands.
Criminals, lawmen and peaceful men. Living in the time of the gun. A prisoner transfer western starring the cream of the crop.
Russell Crowe hits the sand once again. I enjoyed The Quick and the Dead (1995). This time around he plays the badass. Getting him to the train station is the meek and timid Christian Bale, performing excellently alongside Crowe. What a combination!
Legend Peter Fonda, (Holy crap he’s alive) Luke Wilson and “Steve the Pirate” Alan Tudyk grace the screen as lowly townsfolk. AND… One man truly stood out- Ben Foster! Charlie Prince was a creep with swagger. The strut, the outfit and ‘em crazy eyes.
TRIVIA: Exactly ten minutes pass in the movie between the clock striking 3:00 and the arrival of the train.
A spectacular western with grit and glory. Honoring the classics.

Cowboys & Aliens (2011)
A spaceship arrives in Arizona, 1873, to take over the Earth, starting with the Wild West region. A posse of cowboys are all that stand in their way.
Jon Favreau “you da man” i admire yo work. This one was a tough one to judge.
I initially thought this was a Wild Wild West (1999) mash-up with Outlander (2008). But then it dawned on me… fuck… it’s exactly like High Plains Invaders (2009).
Thankfully, this had a solid cast and great special effect work. This was a different western - obviously. The alien race was “ok” and their methods were… a tad bit convenient, in regards to the whole western/cowboy/gold mining theme.
Craig. Daniel Craig did a stupendous job, Alongside legendary Harrison Ford! who fuckin’ tore it up once again. That smirk gets me every time. Olivia Wilde was gorgeous, as usual… those damn eyes that hot bod. And Sam Rockwell rocks it as well, taking the passenger seat (so to speak) and yet holding his own. Everyone else = excellent.
A western with guns aimed at kids. Fun, thrilling and satisfied my popcorn movie craving. Wasn’t my cup-o-tea but it did it’s job… entertain.

The Good, the Bad, the Weird (2008) aka Joheunnom nabbeunnom isanghannom
The story of two outlaws and a bounty hunter in 1940s Manchuria and their rivalry to possess a treasure map while being pursued by the Japanese army and Chinese bandit
Blazin’ guns of… Asia! A spaghetti western with a twist. Non-stop fights, chases and explosions! with some interesting music and funny characters. A genuine Asian western!
Stunning work, as usual, by director Jee-woon Kim. The genius behind A Tale of Two Sisters (2003) and my choice for Asian horror of 2010: I Saw the Devil (2010). Need i say more? He’s got an eye for things i enjoy.
Bridging 3 nations. Japan, China and Korean come together to bring us this crazy adventure of 3 men. And able to stand by the title of “the most expensive movie in South Korean cinema history” (as per 2009), the work and effort paid off.
The Good: Woo-sung Jung from The Warrior (2001), does great as the saddled righteous hero.
The Bad: Storm Shadow! Byung-hun Lee was as amazing as he was in I Saw the Devil (2010) and Three… Extremes (2004) “Cut”.
The Weird: Kang-ho Song from Thirst (2009), Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance (2002) and The Host (2006). All his movies have impressed.
WOW! what and spectacular trio! Needless to say they hit it outta the park. The production was a well oiled machine, the story was interesting and the overall feel was great! This was one hell of a fun ride.
TRIVIA: Director Jee-woon Kim says he’d like this to be called a “kimchee western”, after the Korean food made with fermented cabbages. He says he thinks the plot and film are spicy and vibrant, like the Korean culture and people.
It took me a while to grab a copy, i’m glad i finally got to revisit this crazy action flick! This is a fun film, it’ll keep you smiling from ear to ear.

Rango (2011)
Rango is an ordinary chameleon who accidentally winds up in the town of Dirt, a lawless outpost in the Wild West in desperate need of a new sheriff.
I initially had my doubts, and finally got the chance to judge this for myself. It was good and funny (as people said).
Gore Verbinski, love his 1st name *in the future* “Son you shall be named Gore”. His pirate films were kiddie and silly. This is suppose to be kiddie and silly so, this is in his yard. Well done.
This is obviously a modern/CGI version of the hilarious classic ¡Three Amigos! (1986). Three unemployed actors go to a village, fight bandits and save the day/town. Rango is about a storyteller who “accidentally” finds a town, helps solve their problems and fights bandits. And if it ain’t obvious enough, there are 3 mariachi’s aka amigos narrating and playin’ tunes.
The cast was undeniably superb. A bunch of “crazy eye folk”. Johnny Depp is an amazing voice talent. He brought out other voices and characters not seen/heard in his other films. Isla Fisher sounded like she was havin’ a blast with her character. And “always a scolding character” Bill Nighy is the badass.
Trivia: The first animated feature for special effects company Industrial Light & Magic.
The best parts for me where seeing familiar/iconic sequences from other classic masterpieces, put use in this film. The Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas (1998) bit was nicely done, then they did “The eye of Sauron” LOTR and… Even Star Wars (1977) was referenced. And of course we also meet the “Spirit of the West”, who’s obviously iconic gunslinger Clint Eastwood.
Great job ILM!!! An awesome visual treat, with detail and texture, the action scenes were wonderfully executed. The weakness of this film is the PG content, there was a bit of violence and some/a questionable line or two. And the “bullet”. But besides that, this debut animated feature impressed me.
Wholesome, funny and fun.

True Grit (2010)
A tough U.S. Marshal helps a stubborn young woman track down her father’s murderer.
Started 2011 with a bang!!! The Coen Brothers revive True Grit (1969), a western tale based on the novel by Charles Porti.
The brothers have never failed to amaze and impress, bringing back a simple old story with their own style. Their latest film does not stray from the success of their past movies. I’ve heard so much buzz about True Grit… i just HAD to see it. It was as they said it was, a fun and gritty adventure.
Oh boy! what. a. cast.
Jeff Bridges has had a very busy 2010 (end), being dude-tron and then now the one-eyed drunk gunslinger. Serious and funny, classic. And “woah! i may have lost my Matt Damon hate” undeniably the man can act, I have now accepted the fact Damon is AN ACTOR. Josh Brolin has been very impressive as of late, but doin’ the cowboy thing again??? This year, i wanna see him flex his acting skills in another genre/style.
Newcomer Hailee Steinfeld steals the show!!! as far as foodmustache and I were concerned. This movie would be nothing without that little girl. She drove this film, and complemented her infamous co-stars. This girl is gonna be big.
A simple tale of revenge and how it all unfolds, (of course) the film is 99% character driven, it’s a western. Considering i have not read or seen the classic version, It was good and i was very pleased. Yeee-Haw!!!

Big Money Rustlas (2010)
In the Wild West town of Mudbug, Sheriff Sugar Wolf arrives to confront an over-the-top villain, Big Baby Chips.
A ghetto western comedy. Featuring the many faces of Hip-Hop and Rap, starring the Insane Clown Posse. They must have said “mother fucker” a thousand times in this desperate comedic attempt.
This was dismal and typical… Probably something you’d enjoy… on pot. A few note worthy cameos by Tom Sizemore, Jimmy Hart, Vanilla Ice, Jason Mewes and Ron Jeremy.
I really didn’t like the film… not my type of humor i guess… it’s stupid. Especially the 80s cartoon sound effects… cheap and sleazy… save yourselves from this horrible excuse of a comedy.

Gunless (2010)
A hardened American gunslinger is repeatedly thwarted in his attempts to mount a showdown in a friendly town in Canada where no one seems to understand or appreciate the brutal code of the American Wild West.
A western… comedy? interesting. This was very light and perfect for this lazy sunday afternoon.
Leading this slow-paced tale of “A man’s gotta do what a man’s gotta do” is Paul Gross, a relatively unknown actor, did a good job as the nomadic gunslinger. Sienna Guillory looked good, you guys’ll probably know her more as Jill Valentine in Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004). Big man Tyler Mane, X-Men (2000) Sabretooth, was pretty good as well, playing a mellow role.
A very… VERY light comedy and perfect for family viewing. Nothing spectacular, a Hallmark worthy comedy.
